An very good resource for land management........2004-12-14
This book gives a great background to managing weeds. However, it does focus on management in crop lands. There is excellent information on many different management techniques from mechanical control to the use of herbicides. Many chapters are also devoted to the biological mechanisms that make herbicides effective. For anyone interested in restoration and weed management in noncrop lands, this book may not be worth the money. You can get a lot of the same information off herbicide labels and the internet.

One of the pleasures I savor in reading a good book is to think about friends who might also enjoy the book. So it is with Walking the Shores of Cape Cod, by Elliott Carr, a gift I received from Lindy and John last Christmas. Having tramped a bit of the outer beach myself when we camped as a family many years ago, I can relate to many of his stories. And of course, we have the model set by Henry David Thoreau, almost 150 years ago.
I have recommended it to a number of friends who have a Cape Cod connection.

"The 3-3-5 Defense" is by far the best book that Leo Hand has written. It covers player assignments, techniques, drills, coaching terminology, and lots of diagrams, It is easy to read and well written.
His football terminology maybe a little too much for a new coach, however, all you have to do is look at the diagrams and you will see what he is talking about. A must buy book for any football coach that wants to run the 3-3-5 Defense.

A better buy would be"Coaching Football's 3-3-5- Defense" by Leo Hand.
However, I would still buy this book. This book is easy to read and well written.
You will not get lost trying to understand this book even if your football knowledge is limited.
The book is full of diagrams and it has a nice chapter on how to defense the option.
It is a good book from youth level to college level.

This book will give you a very good start to character literacy. It should be used in conjunction with a program that gives you practice in pronunciation. (I've not found one shoe that fits all.) I'd recommend buying this book and v.2 along with the separately published Pimsleur CD's.
Excellent.......2007-05-13
This book is absolutely one of the two keys to learning Mandarin. (The other is the Pimsleur programs.) I never thought I'd learn this challenging language, even though I'm conversant in three LOTE already; but this book is helping me learn how to write in Mandarin. It also has each new character or word in various contexts to show shades of meaning, which is really important in a tonal language.
I highly recommend this and its companion volume, 1, along with the Pimsleur program, which I'm sure you can get on Amazon.
Get the flash cards instead.......2007-03-09
My only issue with this book is that it is almost completely redundant with the flash cards (Chinese In A Flash) offered by the same author and publisher. I have found the flash cards to be a much more effective way to learn Chinese characters, and so am disappointed about having also purchased the book. Although the book does sometimes include a sentence or two about a character's origin, which could in principle be useful for remembering that character, these sentences usually refer to the traditional character rather than the simplified one, and are usually too brief and simplistic to be of much use anyway. So my advice would be to buy the flashcards instead of the book - they contain the identical information, but in a more compact, easy-to-use format.
A fine way to learn Chinese Characters.......2007-01-31
I love this book. If you're looking to get started on the written Chinese language, I really can't think of a better source of instruction. Each page consists of one single character. For each character every stroke is broken down, the character is explained and half the page is empty squares of practice space. You can also buy flash cards that go along with the book. Writing in Chinese is the best thing ever and if you've wanted a good starting spot then here it is. After you finish this one there is another book of 250 more characters. I like this, it's good and it does me well.

I love this book.
I am learning conversational Chinese and pinyin, and even gaining a basic knowledge of the Hanzi adds a whole new dimension.
Not only do I find learning the charaters fun - they really are quite beautiful things - but quite often I have 'penny dropping' moments where something about a character fills a gap in my understanding and things make more sense. As an aside, I am amazed at how logically Chinese works, and am so glad I don't have to learn English.
To be clear, I would not recommend this to someone with NO knowledge of Chinese. You need to HEAR the language and pronunciation first and foremost.
But even at my basic stage (around a 450 word vocab), starting the Hanzi is wonderful. I had actually picked up the 'first' 100 or so just by studying pinyin and looking at the Hanzi supplied, but being given the stroke order is a major help.
One small suggestion for the author or editors if they ever read this: Adding some arrows on the diagrams to make it 100% clear which way some of the smaller strokes should be drawn would make it even more helpful.

This book is clearly for someone who has never seen a squirrel , much less attempted to hunt one!!!!!
Great for the beginner.......2007-06-19
At 40 years old, I've decided to learn how to hunt and to share the experience with my kids. I figured that we'd start small, and it doesn't get much smaller (or tastier, from what I hear) than squirrels. So this book looked like an attractive starting guide at a good price.
I found the book to be highly informative, a pleasant read, and I'd recommend it to anyone. Bob Gooch uses what I'd call a "codger" style -- the old woodsman teaches us young whippersnappers how to outfox the bushy-tailed tree rat. I've read and reread this book several times, and plan to use it as a guide when I take the kids out for our first squirrel hunt this coming October.
This book gives a broad prespective........2006-03-10
This book is mostly for those that still hunt squirrels. It gives a broad prespective into hunting squirrels in different states with an State by State breakdown of squirrel activity. How when and where to hunt squirrels and different methods of taking these little tree rats.
It touches on hunting squirrels with dogs but just briefly and mentions a using terrier or Jack Russel to hunt squirrel with. (which rates far behind the use of an Original Mountain Cur)
Overall I enjoyed the book, it is a good read and does not get slow or boring for me throughout the book. It's well put together in a hardback color glossy cover. The pictures in the book are also good quality.
I give it a 4 out of 5 stars, I do not regret buying the book and it has earned it's space on my bookshelf to be thumbed through again if I ever needed insight into squirrel hunting any other state than my own.
Good reference material.........2005-12-28
Bob Gooch has done a nice job of updating his previous book, "Squirrels and Squirrel Hunting". This new book should be on every tree squirrel hunter's shelf. Especially helpful to beginners is how to field dress the squirrel. Most have a difficult time with that part of the hunt and his method is quick and easy.
With big game hunting becoming increasingly expensive, more hunters are turning to squirrel hunting as a relatively inexpensive pastime. Squirrel hunting remains a real challenge for a .22 (or .17) caliber rimfire hunter.
I hope Bob will update his book, "Spinning for Trout" as well.

This is a great book. It covers every aspect of hunting this popular and common game animal. The recipe section is a nice bonus as well as the sections that focus on habitat management and conservation. If you hunt squirrels or are considering doing so in the future get this book, you will be glad you did.
