3 out of 5 stars Poorly written and poorly thought out.......2007-04-16

I used both this book and the Priceton Review, and I have to say the Princeton Review one is much better.
The Barron's one appears to have lots of practice questions, but really, towards the middle of the book they leave out free-response questions. Instead, they tell you to solve the question that was provided in the middle of that chapter.
It was as if they wrote this on a deadline and rushed through the entire thing. The content seemed inadequate and explanations were poor. Their attempts to make funny remarks to appeal to the teenage audience were often inappropriate or left the reader confused.
Barron's is usually my first choice for AP prep, but the AP economics book is one exception.
However, you might want to buy this anyway since it comes with 2 practice tests that you could use.

3 out of 5 stars Practice tests are lacking.......2006-07-17

When compared to the Princtons review book, I found that the tests in the Barrons book were too easy. The rest of the book is well laid ou though and explanations are clear and concise. I took the micro and macro tests in may 06 and got 5s on both. But this was mostly because of the princeton book & going online to the ap website.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the purchasing function.......2005-08-30

This easy-to-read text quickly covers the key activities related to purchasing and inventory management; including everything from reorder techniques, to negotiating techniques, to purchasing law. The style of this book is reminiscent of texts published in the early part of the 20th century that focused on quickly getting new managers and clerks up to speed on specific business topics. It avoids the hype of most business books and the pretentious style of most college texts by sticking with short, concise, plain English, treatments of the multitude of topics covered.
The nominal price of this book is a purchasing lesson in itself. This book is a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-08-05

I used this review book to study for the AP Microeconomics exam and was pleased by its coverage of all the necessary topics. Even though the book looks small, there really is no need for more material. When I took the Microeconomics exam, I was surprised by how easy it was. To study for the exam's free response section, be sure to check out previous College Board AP Micro free response exams and their answers. They follow the same basic pattern of topics and form of questions. I received a 5 on the exam. I will use the book again this year for the Macroeconomics section.

2 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2005-05-11

Upon studying for the AP Macroeconomics test, I found the Barrons book to be useless. The sample tests were a joke because they are nothing like the actual AP tests. I took an AP Macroeconomics course in school and the Barrons book did nothing to enhance my knowledge. I would highly recommend the Kaplan AP Economics book because it has challenging sample questions with full explanations to the answers (unlike Barrons). This book does not help one to get a 5 on the AP Macroeconomics test.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what a student needs........2004-06-11

I decided to independently study for the AP Macroeconomics exam my junior year. I had not taken any classes previously that would have helped me on the test. In addition to the Barron's book, I purchased the Princeton Review and the Cliffs Notes books. There is simply no comparsion-- the Barron's book is FAR superior. It does not waste the reader's time delving into topics not on the exam. It covers exactly what the student needs to know.
The other two books I mentioned are excessively light on some topics, and I am confident that if I would have taken the test with one or both of them, I would not have done nearly as well. But the Barron's book gave me everyting I needed.
At the end of each chapter(as is the case with all Barron's AP books) there are 15 multiple-choice questions covering the material from the chapter and a free response question. I found these questions relevant and instructive. The sample AP exam in the back of the book is well done.
Thanks to this book, I am confident I got a 5 on the AP Macroeconomics exam. There was just one multiple choice question I didn't recognize. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars I independent studied using this book.......2002-10-21

I never took the AP microeconomics course offered at my school. I just used this book and the PR book. Overall, this book is great in that it teaches all the information needed to ace the test. However, the questions in the practice test are not reflective of those on the real test. Also, sometimes, this book delves too deeply into the subject. It provides far more information than is necessary to get a 5 on the test. It is also more boring than the Princeton Review book. Information is presented in paragraph forms rather than in bulleted form, making it more unorganized. However, knowing this book back to front will easily get the job of getting a 5 on the AP test accomplished.

      Book Description

Breaking Through the Grass Ceiling examines the contemporary position of women in agriculture and looks at why farm women are virtually absent from positions of power and leadership. Alston draws on interviews and surveys from Australian women-farmers, bureaucrats, leaders and activists, and compares these to the experiences of powerful men in the industry. Giving a voice to rural women, this book represents a wide-ranging, rich tapestry of opinion and insight.
It is clear that ideology and structure prevent agricultural women from becoming prominent in an industry to which they contribute so much. Yet far from being helpless victims, the women emerge as strong, determined characters forging an alternative discourse through multiple strategies of resistance. You will leave this book feeling enormous respect for the women involved, their humor, hard work and commitment to agriculture and to their farms matched by their determination to achieve equality and justice in their industry.

I am very disappointed in MILKY WAY & MARS BARS: ASTRONOMY FOR KIDS! I am keeping the book because the glossary is useful, but the quality and format of the book is not appealing or effective in teaching children about astronomy. I was intrigued by the clever title of the book, but disapointed with its contents.

            Book Description

For one not familiar with the direct simplicity of Hsing-i as a martial art, it is paradoxically simple and complex. The five fists, a set of forms linked with the chinese concepts of the five elements, provide a base template of techniques that the hsing-i practitioner turns into an effective combat meditation. Through mindful repetitiveness, one "becomes," attaining a state of unforced being through which martial arts techniques flow. Also included in this book are quotations from the ancient Chinese masters that detail the mental disposition of the boxer, along with ample photographs and illustrations. This primer about Hsing-I has been widely sought by collectors since the book's first publication almost 30 years ago.

            5 out of 5 stars This is a Keeper.......2007-03-29

This book was one of the earlier books on martial arts that I purchased. Not knowing a thing about martial arts at the time, I couldn't get my mind around much of what was presented. On the other hand, I loved the stories within and the "advice of the masters" segment right away. I remember staring intently at the pictures of Yuan Dao, Paul Guo and especially the little section featuring the five elements done by Wang Shu Jin. Taken in an unposed mid-action way, they really convey Wang's dynamic actions. Having since studied both Xingyiquan and Baguazhang for more than a decade, I have come to realize what a goldmine was presented here. This book still lays, beaten and tattered, littered with highlighting and notes, on my bookshelf. This is because the book presented Xingyi postures by highly skilled practitioners along with excellent guides to its meaning and practice. Newer books may show more material, or translate large tracts of key points, but this book still has the goods: first rate practitioners showing their art. Recently when giving a gift to a person I wanted to get interested in Xingyi, I still chose this book.

4 out of 5 stars Two out of five ain't bad........2007-01-20

There are five pieces to Xing Yi: Wu Xing, Lian Huan, the first two-man forms, the 12 animal forms, and the later two-man forms. This book includes the first two: the five fists and their linking form. And it spells them out without any mystical nonsense or other garbage. Mr. Smith was more or less a collector of Chinese Boxing and threw some not-so-xing-yi things in here too. But that's okay because he also includes excerpts from Sun Lutang's True Boxing Stories (loose translation of title.) This book is certainly worth your time and its price.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Hsing-I Martial Art.......2006-10-07

This is one of the best books available on the subject of Martial Arts.
The book is on a specific subject - Internal Martial Arts (of China) known as Hsing-I. The illustrations with pictures are lucid. The book covers basic principles, basic techniques, philosophies, all the 12 style forms, brief history and biographies of masters, masters' advices, applications to self defence and a lot more. It very clearly explains why Hsing-I is known as Mind-Body Boxing. The author has put his heart into writing about Hsing-I. The scientific approach of a western mind combined with the author's expertise in the oriental subject make the book complete, thorough and interesting. The book is complete in itself on the subject. It also explains importance of Chi (Energy or Pran) cultivation that is the basis of all the internal martial arts including Hsing-I.

The book provides a complete and thorough knowledge on Hsing-I.
It is a complete reference on the subject.

Very rarely have I seen a martial arts book so interesting, lucid and complete.

            4 out of 5 stars A Classic Work.......2006-05-09

What it lacks in detailed illustrations, it makes up for in character and detailed instruction. I agree that this one is far and away better than the version which Mr. Smith and Mr. Pittman co-authored.
It's an excellent book for anyone who's really curious about this wonderful art as well as for Xingyi neophytes.

            4 out of 5 stars 5 fists & advice from the masters.......2005-01-28

For one not familiar with the direct simplicity of hsing-i (pinyin: xingyiquan) as a martial art, it is paradoxically simple yet complex. The five fists, a set of forms linked with the chinese concepts of the five elements, provide a base template of techniques that the hsing-i practitioner turns into an effective combat meditation. Through mindful repetitiveness, one *becomes*, attaining a state of unforced being through which martial techniques flow.

I like this book. Early in my martial career, personages, lineages and other such nonsense were antithetical. I thought: "why should those things be in a book about kicking butt?" I'm older now and greatly value what my teachers and my teachers teachers pass on to me. This book is steeped in that same sense of reverence. The author provides a thoughtful balance of basic techniques with quotes from famous hsing-i masters and a look at his own hsing-i lineage, which are very interesting and well done.

This is mainly a reference material, as Books and DVDs do not make good primary instructional material for martial arts, so plan on attending a seminar or finding a good local school to get the most from this book.

5 out of 5 stars Right on the mark!.......2003-02-19

This book places a plethora of information around a very specific subject right at your fingertips. I have discovered much information that I can use on my own body as I move to eliminate low back pain. As a mother I found it very informative in regards to allowing children to develop at their own pace; why not to put them in exersaucers, etc from the perspective of the psoas muscle. It is definitely something else to consider if you are experiencing low back pain, menstrual cramps, infertility, etc. Releasing the psoas will not be a cure-all for every body, but this book provides some interesting food for thought! I plan to use a lot of the information on fear and the psoas with my prenatal yoga classes as an extra tool for helping expectant parents with labor and childbirth. Admittedly an editor could address the spelling errors, etc. but the content is valuable and thought-provoking if you can simply release projecting perfectionism onto the author and appreciate her hard work, 20+ years of experience with and passion for this very important muscle!

              1 out of 5 stars Not a useful resource.......2002-11-27

This book was chock full of editing errors, some of them quite significant. Some of the errors affected the content and sense of the material. Spelling, grammar, facts and consistency were all extraordinarily poor. In just one of many examples, the text refers to an illustration that is nowhere to be found in the book; yet it is an important reference. There is really very little useful material in this book, even if one can ignore the errors. Those errors, however, make one distrust the entire content. Ms. Koch may be knowledgeable, but she desperately needs an editor!!

Liz Koch's book is jam-packed with information on an often overlooked but very important muscle. The book was recommended to me by a Rolfer, and I was amazed at how much more there is to our bodies and their functioning than what we know. Liz Koch explains in easy-to-understand language how the psoas encompasses all aspects of our lives. This book is great for anyone with a lumbar lordosis (overarched lower back). I've been doing the exercises in the book for several months and have noticed an improvement in my posture and movement. I highly recommend "The Psoas Book!!"

In this book, Liz Koch brings together information and insight about the iliopsoas muscle that you can't find anywhere else.

As a professional bodyworker and movement educator for over 25 years, I've met many people - clients, chiropractors, physical therapists, dancers, practitioners of yoga and other somatic therapists - who recognize the importance of the psoas muscle for optimal postural alignment, back health, and over-all well-being. Very few of them, however, can explain the significant and complex relationships that the psoas has with other muscle groups, with our internal organs, and with our emotional experience. And even fewer know how to adequately release their own psoas tension, to fascilitate optimal psoas tone, or to teach others these essential skills.

Liz Koch has spent over 20 years exploring this muscle and its influence, and she generously shares her extraordinary discoveries with us in her book. There are many drawings that help to clarify the text, which not only covers the basics, like location and function of the psoas, but extends into self-care exercises and application of these ideas to everyday considerations, like what kind of shoes or chairs or sports can support psoas health. There's also an entire section addressing the role of the psoas in women's cycles, pregnancy and menopause.

This book is a revelation! I recommend it to anyone who is searching for the keys to self-awareness and more vibrant health.

                  Book Description

                  The hidden dangers surrounding us.

Despite the confident strides of modern science, the threat of deadly unseen organisms such as viruses, bacteria and fungi still grip the imagination with their ferocious intensity.

For instance, resistant strains of bacteria can now survive the strongest antibiotics and deadly new biological weapons are being cooked up in laboratories worldwide.

Microterrors explores these threats as well as humanity's greatest living rivals that have been on the planet far longer than we have.

The introduction covers terms, definitions and a brief natural history, including the role of viruses in human evolution, as well as bioengineering and biological weapons. Microterrors then presents the truly terrifying rogues' gallery of invisible killers.

Dramatic life-like digital illustrations and computer-colored electron images provide mug book profiles of hundreds of naturally occurring and bioengineered microterrors, including:

Each entry includes concise facts such as date of discovery and place of origin, period of incubation, symptoms and length of suffering, likelihood of death, treatments, vaccines and cures.

I have been looking for an informative book on microbes for a long time, and I've found exactly what I've been looking for with this book. The information in Microterrors is organized and easy to understand, especially for someone that's interested in finding out more about the germs they hear about everyday on the news. This book makes you want to learn more about these deadly terrors, and at the same time lock yourself away in a clean room. Definitely a must read for anyone interested in the genre.

                  4 out of 5 stars Spelling Bee.......2005-08-02

Nice little reference book. I bought it first and foremost because it was nicely designed. It's brief but informative and has alot of nice images. The downfall of this book, as I noticed after reading it, is that the editor did an appalling job of ...well editing. This book has an insane amount of spelling and grammar errors (for a book in print I mean). I was a bit dissapointed by that, I guess they sacrificed clarity for image. Too bad, it could have been perfect. Anyway not to end on a sour note the graphics and the information make up for that one flaw.

5 out of 5 stars Images paired with a quick reference and health facts.......2005-03-11

The telescope's invention and advancement let the human world in on how tiny organisms looked, and helped to reveal pathogens and their dangers: now the images of these disease-producing microbes, from viruses to fungi, are accessible to non-scientists in MICROTERRORS, a gathering of microscope color images paired with a quick reference and health facts. Clinical notes on treatment and prevention round out a unique approach.

5 out of 5 stars This is rated as a "Quick Reference" book only.......2004-12-13

I am very happy that I bought this book once I read it through. It is very useful as a quick reference, but it is not an indepth book. It is practical and the original description on the amazon site is right on the money. I read the whole thing in just a couple of hours but will keep it on hand for reference (as which I feel it was designed for).

I would recommend this book to students, teachers, and for people who want a quick reference for when that annoying "know it all" relative or neighbor brings up the subject of something they read in the paper last week. If you need a quick source, this is it.

My wife is a plague, virus, and pandemic book aficionado and she liked it alot. Even my 4th grader was able to use it for a project on the flu so that says (to me) that it really is easy to read.
