I'd like to give it ZERO stars. .......2006-09-06
Of all the textbooks I've had, from elementary school through graduate school, this is easily the worst one I've ever had, for any course.
First of all, the authors so redundantly use the word "whilst" and the phrase "rules of the game" that it really gets on your nerves. My classmates all agree with me on this point.
Second, speaking of getting on your nerves, half of what these authors say is, "...as we talked about in the previous chapter" or "as we'll talk about in the next chapter". There is so much redundant language in this book that it really could be condensed to about 25% of its size, and hell, it probably could simply be a chapter in the text for some other course.
Third, the authors should win a Pulitzer prize for flowery language. They seem more interested in impressing me than educating me. Their sentences are far too long. They don't know the meaning of clear and concise, and I think they should all go back to English Composition 101. They'd be great politicians, because never have I heard anyone say so much and yet say so little....over and over and over again.
The book is a like an inflated academic paper...and it's BORING. If ever a topic begged for a case-study approach, it's this one, and this book is not the answer. Save your money, and beg your instructor not to use this text.
Brilliant read!!.......2004-06-02
Used this book for the 'Managing Processes and Products' course on my MBA. Found it quite interesting and illuminating with plenty of examples to bring the subject to life. Would definitely recommend it.
Not for the faint hearted........2003-11-10
This book is very difficult to read. The sentences are so long that you will struggle to make sense of them. The author goes out of his way to use long complicated words. This is not a good book to read to introduce yourself to the subject.
Book Description
Technical innovation has moved to center stage in contemporary debates on economic theory and policy, and Chris Freeman and Luc Soete have played a prominent part in these debates. For this new edition of The Economics of Industrial Innovation, they have rewritten all the existing chapters and added ten new ones that address recent advances in theory and in policymaking. In the new chapters they deal with the international dimensions of technical change including underdevelopment, technology transfer, international trade, and globalization. They have also strengthened the historical account of the rise of new technologies, a main feature of earlier editions. They take advantage of their experience on projects for the OECD, the European Union, and industry in other new chapters on "The Information Society" and on environmental issues, as well as in the updated discussion of science and technology policy.

Excellent Presentation of Statistical Procedures.......2000-06-22
Very straight forward, easy to read, easy to follow (Comparitively, of course to books like Steele ane Torrie). This book is very useful as a quick reference aid or for in-depth study.

Book Description
Systems approaches for agricultural development are needed to determine rational strategies for the role of agriculture in national development. Mathematical models and computer simulation provide objective tools for applying science to determine and evaluate options for resource management at field, farm and regional scales. However, these tools would not be fully utilizable without incorporating social and economic dimensions into their application.
The second international symposium,
Systems Approaches for
Agricultural Development (SAAD), held in Los Baños, 6-8 December 1995, fostered this link between the biophysical sciences and the social sciences in the selection of keynote papers and oral presentations, a selection of which are included in these books. The contents further reflect how systems approaches have definitely moved beyond the research mode into the application mode. The large number and high quality of interdisciplinary research projects reported from different parts of the globe, to determine land use options that will meet multiple goals and yet sustain natural resource bases, is a key indicator of this `coming of age'. At the farm level, where trade-off decisions between processes and products (commodities) feature strongly, much progress is also evident in the development of systems-based tools for decision making. At the field level optimization of resource use and minimizing environmental effects has become of major concern for which systems approaches are indispensable.
The books, of which Volume I deals with regional and farm studies level and Volume II with field level studies, will be of particular interest to all agricultural scientists and planners, as well as students interested in multidisciplinary and holistic approaches to agricultural development.

Book Description
The total estimated damage from greenhouse gas, acid rain, atmospheric pollution, and other man made changes to the environment is of staggering proportions. This clearly points out a need for presentation of the worldwide research results about the environmental effect of the above listed factors and their possible remediation. To that end, this book advances the present state of our knowledge and understanding of the environment and also serves as a basis for thoughtful debate and positive action for the preservation of our biosphere.

Customer Reviews:
A Timeless Classic for Fly Anglers.......2007-09-27
John Gierach is to fly fishing what Will Rogers was to social commentary. It's the common human experience of anticipation, joy, anger, humor, camaraderie, disappointment and resilience we can easily relate to in John's elegant stories. If you are a fly fisher then the tales are just that much better. You will read the twenty chapters of this book and immediately want to go back and enjoy your favorites again. Yes, it's that good.
Gierach is the best.......2007-04-03
Every fly fisherman has his favorite writers. It's a necessity, because it's so much easier to find time to read than it is to find time to fish. Gierach is wonderful. I've read most of his books. I like Bill Tapply too.
Still a great read........2007-03-30
This book is just terrific. A timeless classic. Even if you don't fly fish it is well worth reading.
Zen and the art of Trout Fishing.......1997-08-24
John's travels and travails with A.K. Best and a world class Trout addiction are literate, light and great fun to read when you can't be fishing yourself
Rave review.......1996-08-02
This is a terrific book. Bite-sized, hilarious chapters. required reading for fly fishers, but captivating for everyone else as well
Customer Reviews:
Don't judge a book by its cover really applies here!!.......2007-01-29
I have been fishing for trophy trout in stillwaters in the western US and Canada for over 40 years and have a library that includes more than 150 books on trout fishing - many on lake fishing. If I had to pick one book on stillwater trout fishing I couldn't do without, it would be this one!! Indepth coverage of all the important aspects of how to catch trout in lakes - especially imitation of food items. Simple line drawings get the information across very adequately - better than a lot of fancy pictures might in other publications. Fly fishers of all levels will benefit from reading this book - it is not just for the beginner or intermediate fly angler. Contains more information than a lot of books that cost 3-4 times as much.
A Treasure Chest of Gems for the Stillwater Trout Fisherman.......2002-04-30
Mike Croft has done an exceptional job of concisely explaining Stillwater fishing in a way that even a dummy like me can understand. His use of humor and his own drawings is a welcome change from the usual droll tomes on fly-fishing that are generally published today. Some may call it a comic book and I suppose that in some ways it is. But, it is the most informative comic book you'll ever read. Buy the book and I'm sure you'll see what I mean.
A seriously fun, illustrated reference for bigtrout-o-holics.......1999-06-25
Imagine that classic, fully-illustrated, introduction-to-flyfishing of the Disco Era, The Curtis Creek Manifesto, all grown up and gone to grad school. Way more sophisticated in its approach to the subject matter and its style of art, Mike Croft has created a seriously fun, illustrated reference for unrepentant, stillwater bigtrout-o-holics. It sports more usable, hardwon information for the frogwater flyfisher than can be found in an armload of current how-tos. This book rocks!
An informative "must read" for the beginner & intermediate.......1998-12-09
I found this book to be a very informative "must read" for the beginner as well as intermediate fly fishers. It's fun to read and the amount of tips will definitely enhance one's enjoyment on the water as well as increase your catch rate.

Book Description
In Montessori Read & Write, Lynne Lawrence, a leading Montessori practitioner, shows you how you can teach your children to read and write using the famous Montessori system. The book is packed with ideas and age-specific activities and games that make learning easy and fun. It puts children on the straightest possible road to literacy, from those first steps in recognizing letters, sounds, and shapes through vocabulary-building and spelling competence to full reading fluency and creative writing skills.
As a valuable bonus, Montessori Read & Write includes a list of special books that you and your child can enjoy reading together.
Customer Reviews:
What is my kid doing in a Montessori Class?.......2006-03-01
This book really helped me to support my kids and their teachers as they moved through their primary years at Fayette Montessori.
Although I did not have to work with them at home, understanding the methods they used in the class made me a hugh Montessori advocate.
Easy to use.......2003-04-22
This is a easy to use book to use with lots of games to play. In keeping with the Montessori way, kids will not know they are learning. As a parent, the games and instructions are easy to follow. The book encourages you to follow the games in sequence, as they build on eachother. I liked that short explanations were given for each game reagrding what it would teach the children. One thing, it does assume having some of the Montessori tools/toys such as sandpaper letters which you can buy or make yourself. But many of the gamse require only you and your kid. Good book, I am moving toward a Montessori house and hope my kids will benefit from it.
Great Ideas, and Lots of Them.......2003-01-10
Montessori Read and Write is a terrific book and is stuffed with many, many great ideas and suggestions for teaching your young child to read and instilling a love of reading. The content of this book can actually be a bit overwhelming. I suggest a very slow reading of this book, interspersed with trying the ideas slowly with your children. As with all children, some of these ideas will work better individually than others, but I think most children will benefit very much from this book. Happy reading to you and your children.
An Excellent Start-up Book for the Montessori Method.......2002-10-11
My oldest son attended a Montessori school for the first 5 years of his formal schooling and I believe it gave him a firm foundation for his future schooling. Now I have two small children and I also want them to be exposed to the Montessori method, however, I want to homeschool them as well. This seemed a formidable task until I found Lynne Lawrence's book, as well as "Teaching Montessori In the Home by Elizabeth G. Hainstock", which gives me the guidelines and instruction I need to successfully utilize the Montessori method in my own home. I highly recommend this book to all parents, whether homeschooling or not.
Just what I was looking for !.......1999-05-19
As the mother of a four year old attending Montessori school, I was devastated that we would have to move before the school year was over-and just when my son was learning the basics of reading! At our new home, there was no Montessori school with a mid-year opening, so rather than wait to continue his education, I decided to home school in the Montessori method. Not being formally educated in Montessori, or even early childhood education, I was overjoyed to find this book. It is a clearly written instruction on teaching young children to read and write using many senses. My son, having familiarity with some of the tools already, actually instructed me a few times, but it is wonderful to watch him so confident and enjoying learning. For anyone homeschooling or looking to supplement their young childs education, this book is a valuable tool.
Customer Reviews:
Worth the Price of Admission.......2005-05-10
After reading and enjoying the first half of this book, I signed on to read the reviews here. I have come to believe it is a good measure of a book to look at the seriousness of the negative reviews. The one negative review here, so far, is not credible. To criticize a substative critique of our governmental procedures because it is not entertaining, seems shallow. To call a work polemic, is not to say it is untrue.
I highly recommend this work. I will not think the same of the way our congress works or doesn't work because of Mr. Wheeler's insights. His criticisms are bi-partison and concern the procedures of our government.
The section of the book contrasting the development of the War Powers Act to the recent senate approval of the Iraqi war, is worth the price of the entire book.
Much of the book discusses "Pork" issues in the Senate and specifically in defense bills. But the real issue is how such issues corrupt the entire process. To dismiss this issue because the dollar amount spent on "pork" is small in relationship to the entire federal budget, is to overlook the corrosive effect of this matter. This book highlights how prevasive it is in the lives of our members of congress. And that is a fact that is not in the interests of anyone reading this review.
An overall analysis of Congressional failures.......2005-03-07
How does Congress sabotage U.S. security? Wastrels of Defense: How Congress Sabotages U.S. Security is no sensationalist title: it's written by a veteran National Security Advisor to four senators and backed by years of political insider interactions. His is a damning expose arguing that since 9/11, Congress has endangered the nation's security by diverting money from war-fighting accounts to pay for state interests. Meticulous documentation of such actions makes this a winning title not limited to one party or philosophy, but to an overall analysis of Congressional failures.
Helpful Reading, More Opinion than Research.......2005-02-13
What the author does in this book is focus on the failings of Congress. What the author does not do is provide a more documented analysis of why and how Congress has become disconnected from the people it is supposed to represent, or why the Executive does not balance Congress when the latter abuse their powers. The "balance of power" is in fact a "balance of pork privileges," and it is this inability, as the author describes it, to focus on all the facts, in an objective way, in order to make the best application of the taxpayer dollar, that cripples Congress (and the Executive).
I've given the author four stars because I disagree with those who would demean his motives. What I read here is consistent with the other books I have read--and my own experience talking to generally witless under-educated staff (because I am not important enough to get to the few who are "top notch"). When the author open his book by pointing out that ***all*** watchdog or balancing elements--the media, the think tanks--have failed to hold Congress accountable, I must agree with him.
The most interesting "thread" within the book has to do with information--what information gets where, who sees it, what do they do with it. At the end, the author concludes, most Members are not doing their homework, and most staffs are too busy focused on inserting partisan advantage and localized pork to actually serve the people of the United States in an effective manner.
The book is unusual in being focused on national security and defense, where the author spent his entire career, and what jumped out at me is that Congress has no grand strategy--Congress, like the Executive, is fragmented into stovepipes and is not able to make thoughtful trade-offs at the big picture level between Diplomacy Information Military Economic (DIME) instruments of national power.
The author is severely critical, and rightly so, I believe, in lambasting the Members for abdicating their Constitutional power to declare war. On page 221 he says that it is clear that Members consider their re-election prospects more important than the need to stand tall and oppose a war they do not support.
The author ends by proposing 12 steps for Congressional reform, among the most important of which is exposure of the truth to the public: no more Congressional Record "revisions," no more secret back-room meetings, no more fake camera shots showing Senators speaking to an empty room; no more lightweight partisan staff shuttling to jobs in the Executive they are supposed to help oversee; no more stone-walling of the press; and no more lobbyists with direct access--only constituents. These are all common sense suggestions that are helpful to the public interest.
The author's last two sentences of the book are most helpful of all: "There is really only one thing that will force members of Congress to perform as best as they are able. That is for the public to have the information to distinguish the good from the bad and the phonies from the sincere."
Public information in the public interest...this is the key.
Poorly written polemic.......2005-02-06
Let me first tell you what I was looking for, and then what this book is all about.
I was looking for something a bit more scholarly, though the title should have tipped me off that this was more of a polemical book along the lines of Bovard's "Farm Fiasco". Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Now about the book: it is written poorly, the prose is wooden. Quite tedious to read because it is written in a polemic but not in an entertaining way. Kind of like the reviews on Amazon that give it five stars. If you dislike that "Soviet style" retoric, then this book is heavy slogging.
As to specifics: mostly anectodal evidence is given of 'pork', but nothing concrete. Adding the numbers, and if you've read Bovard's (a much better writer) expose, you will know that pork is between $1 billion to (at most) $100 billion. Nothing to write home about when the Federal budget is $2500 billion.
Slightly more interesting than the travails of a 50 year old Congressional staffer who apparently knew he was due to retire and started ghost writing under the name "Sparticus" (and the wrinkles of how he got fired are told in this book), is stuff that only a real Washington insider might appreciate: how, for example, the GAO is, despite their popular image as a watchdog, considered by Beltway insiders as incompetent and superficial. Also you can read between the lines and see which Senators are bombastic (Stevens, Domenici) and which the author admires (Jarvis, Kassebaum, and sometimes, in a backhand way, McCain).
A much, much better book about how government operates when it comes to pork is anything by James Bovard (if you like over-the-top bombast mixed with much more fact than this book), or, if you like humor, try "Parliament of Whores" by P. J. O'Rourke, which is actually pretty good in explaning things, besides being funny.
Are you afraid of WMD? .......2004-12-09
US Congress gave a $67M grant to fund productive employment for former Soviet WMD scientists. $30M of that was spent on salaries of American staffers (including $100K golf fees) $20M was stolen outright by that same American staffers. $10M was paid to close the program down very, very quietly. The remaining $7M was spent to employ about 200 Russians for about a year and to report that the number of the Russians employed was 3370. Russian producer of bioweapons (anthrax, small pox) could not get any money to convert itself as the money it requested was spent to buy an apartment for the American program director. Nobody was punished but the whistleblower. Relevant documents are here: http://nunn-lugar.com/def/
