Media market made simple, but at a cost.......2001-08-18
The text offers an overview of the American media market, with general facts and figures. Broadcasting, film and print industries are detailed in separate chapters. The book is concise and clear, but at a cost: it does not provide a consistent set of economic models for an in-depth analysis of the structure of the market, or its current trends. The level of the economics is somewhat basic. Good for students, not so much for more advanced readers.

Clear skies!.......2001-12-27
The 2002 Hubble calendar is even better than the 2001! More nebulae and even a Herbig-haro object. The Ring Nebula, the Eskimo Nebula, and a beautiful blue reflection nebula are my favorites. Last year's had a couple radio images and planetary images that weren't as spectacular as the deep-space ones; 2002 is all deep-space.
As last year, this year has multiple factoids on most days of the month. Birthdays of famous astronomers and physicists, milestones in science, and acheivements in the Space Race. Definitely recommended for anyone who loves to "keep looking up."

Book Description
Ecophysiology of Vascular Halophytes provides a useful update to existing literature describing the ecophysiological responses of vascular halophytes to environmental stresses present in saline habitats. The success of species growing in these extreme environments is related to a number of adaptations, including the timing of phenological events, phenotypic plasticity and genetic selection for specific ecophysiological responses at different stages of development. Factors discussed that influence the growth and distribution of halophytes include seed germination, salinity stress, salt stimulation, flooding, ion content, nitrogen, plant water status, growth regulators, photosynthesis, and genecology. The book also discusses the effects of both interspecific and intraspecific competition on the growth and survival of halophytes. Researchers and students of stress ecology, as well as agricultural research organizations, will find a tremendous store of information in this volume.

Great Book.......2007-04-02
So I didn't actually want to read this book, but had to for a class I was taking...
It was great! Absolutely loved the book!!!
Gave me a lot of insight into a very competitive gymnast friend of mine :)
The view of a twelve year old gymnast.......2006-07-22
I am a 12-year-old elite gymnast, in training for the 2012 Olympics!
Here are some amazing things in this book.
Did you know that a young gymnast called Adriana was murdered by her coach?
It does not, however, tell the story of Australian gymnast Sophie Gilligan, who at 13 looked 6. An Olympic prospect at age 13, but she was turned down by the olympic selectors because she was too young. Her obese stage mother told the tiny, 66-pound Sophie off. Later that day, the depressed, sad Sophie beat both her mother and her cute, chubby 4-year-old sister Molli to death, then committed suicide. She was a great and promising gymnast, and we lost her.
It is how gymnastics is.......2006-04-29
I know that many gymnasts are anarexec, but that is just that happens in gymnastics.
It is sad, but you must be thin and small to be a perfect gymnast, and they will just keep getting smaller, thinner and younger. I am twelve, but I have reached puberty, so I will never be the ideal gymnast.
MAny gymnasts do not fit the mould of tiny thin and light. I mean when i was only ten, i was ideal, at four feet and six inches and probably 52pound sprite. But now I have grown to 4feet 10 inches and about 108 pounds, so I will never be able to be what i was when i was ten.
It is sad that the womanly, graceful gymnasts are not considered good as the tiny, tumbling pixies. But that is just how gymnasyics. Soon, 8-11 year old gymnasts will be big names, like nz gymnast Lily West, junior New Zealand champion at age 9.
Now, gymnastical girls are coming in as young as 9-10 years. They are tiny, maybe 36 pounds at 10! And they are thin and flat chested. Because that is the ideal gymnast.
THE CHANGE OF GYMNASTIC.......2006-03-28
Olivia was eleven. she wanted to be a gymnast so she was watching olga Korbut live at the olymips she noticed that Olga Korbut was skinny and perpurspent at 36kg .but olivia had breasts and hips and was plump at 120 pounds but she wanted to be a gymnast but if olga changed gymnastic she could not join, because the sport would be for tiny skinny preprubesnt girls aged 13-15 that they would stary gymnastics at age3,4,5,6,. It would be too late for Olivia sha hd to stop olga so she ran onto the floor and olga's feet plummeted into her fat stomach and Olgs Korbut was mad and she jumped on Olivias tummy and olivia felt allhot and sick she rubbed her sore tummy but she sicked all over the floor and since olga jumped and upset olivia's tummy she also had diarea as she was sicking.
and that is the story of how olivia missed her chance at the olumpics and lots of other girls too
behind the glamour.......2005-11-09
Ever see a gymnast or a figure skater on TV and wonder just how they got their bodies to do that? This book goes behind the scenes and charts the often painful steps these girls go through on the road to the Olympics. It isn't pretty. The various subjects Ryan profiled developed eating disorders in record numbers, as well as exacerbated injuries while refusing to rest. Ryan describes the abuse these girls suffer at the hands of their coaches and parents, who push them relentlessly to be the best. In one example, an Olympic hopeful became paralyzed attempting a vault that was too difficult for her level of expertise, and who eventually died as a result. And figure
skating has its share of horror stories, the Nancy Kerrigan-Tonya Harding being the most famous. Ryan calls for reforms, noting that girls are still children and their welfare must be looked after. It's impossible to watch gymnastics or figure skating after reading this book without looking for the pain behind the cheers and smiling faces.

Customer Reviews:
This author is the epitome of witty.......2005-03-28
Even if you're not interested in journalism - if all that you're looking for is a fun read - then pick up this book. He takes examples of good work and explains why it's good, as well as poor work and points out the deficiencies in a way this is both entertaining and enlightening. I don't agree with all of his opinions, but I very much enjoyed the book nonetheless.
Good Resource.......2004-12-09
As a college journalism minor, I found a lot of information in this book.
When the author makes the case for using "said" to attribute quotes, it does make writing the quotes into the story much easier. However, I don't like using the same word over and over again, but that's a personal thing. I do like how it makes it easier to decide how to give credit for a quote though, less guess work on the part of the writer.
The "Mixed Metaphor" section of the book was great for evaluating my personal writing.
The examples in the book are pretty good articles. I really liked "Churubusco's All Round Nice Guy". I read the story and thought that it was a little reminiscent of Anna Quindlan's style of writing, especially in her piece "Homeless".
Had I not needed this book for my journalism class, I most likely would not have bought it. However, I think that it is a good resource for those who write.
How to avoid an attack of The Elongated Yellow Fruit.......2004-05-26
"The Associated Press Guide to News Writing" makes more points in 136 pages than do most writing books four times the size. One would expect no less from a master news editor like Rene Chappon. The formula Cappon follows is to write a very brief explanation of a problem; an example of the problem; a sentence dissecting the example; a rewriting of the problem sentence; and a summary of the topic. The result is almost always memorable. Consider this typical section on The Elegant Variation (capitalized words below are italicized in the original):
***
Writers who believe that the repetition of plain words within shouting distance of each other is crude take off on synonym safaris.... It's all the more grotesque as there are few true synonyms and the author may introduce misfits:
"The mayor's task force was asked to meet with the owners of the STRUCTURES, discuss whether they wanted their BUILDINGS preserved, and recommend ways to adapt older EDIFICES to new use."
STRUCTURES could be anything and EDIFICES is too grandiose; the story concerns commercial and apartment buildings. If the author didn't want to repeat BUILDINGS, a pronoun was the way out:
"...to meet with the owners of the buildings, discuss whether they wanted THEM preserved, and recommend ways to adapt the older ones to new uses."
The same craving for daintiness will convert elephants to PACHYDERMS, dogs to CANINES, cats to FELINES, tigers to STRIPED PREDATORS and cars to VEHICLES. Petroleum becomes BLACK GOLD, snow becomes WHITE POWDER (a justly forgotten poet once called it "God's dandruff"), a banana turns into THE ELONGATED YELLOW FRUIT.
***
The benefit of this style is that Cappon's admonitions pop up unasked whenever we commit one of the sins he identifies. I find that "elongated yellow fruit" frequently superimposes itself on my more tortured prose.
An exceptional guide to newswriting.......2004-01-21
AP Guide to Newswriting would have to be the most informative and thorough book on newswriting I have come across. It is clear and concise and deserves a prominent position on every journalists bookshelf. With the excellent price tag why hesitate?
Now, if only I could get all newswriters' to follow Cappon's example. Thanks Cappon for keeping it short and sweet!
Details, and Details about how to write well........2003-06-03
I barely received my copy, and the
advice/help on being a better writer
is pretty good. One thing that stands
out in the book is the issue of vulgarity,
and that is simply a no when it comes
to writing journalism. The other areas
are well explained, and i tell any one
who is reading this small paragraph, get it,
it is worth it! It will definitely help you
get more creative with your writing, this is
like the bloom's taxonomy of writing.
Book Description
The long-awaited songbook of poems and lyrics, penned by one of the most acclaimed music artists of her time, Alicia Keys, is finally here for her throngs of fans. When she burst onto the scene, Alicia's years of intensive classical piano study and musical schooling paid off with over 12 million copies of her two albums sold, a huge international fan base, and an arena tour with female musical contemporaries, Beyoncé and Missy Elliot. Her talent has been rewarded with nine Grammy Awards (including Best New Artist), four American Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, a Billboard Award, and two Soul Train Awards.
Though Alicia has been very vocal through her career, there were always "delicate thoughts" that she never before imagined she'd share with anyone else-until now. Alicia Keys opens the journals and notebooks that she has kept throughout her life, documenting her growth as a person, a woman, and an artist, and reveals her heart to her fans in return for all the love they have shown to her and her music.

I really enjoyed these........2006-07-22
Alicia Keys is not Maya Angelou and she's not trying to be. From some of the bad reviews I'm not sure that people got that. Granted, I may be biased because I'm such a big fan of her music, but I still enjoyed this compilation never the less.
Excellent!.......2006-03-12
Alicia has a beautiful writing style. She's very personal, and shares every emotion in completeness. I'm glad she took the time to share her work. It was a very addictive read. I can't wait for her next work, hopefully on it's way...
Not what I expected.......2006-02-04
I absolutely adore Alicia Keys but the book was not what I expected. I thought she would have more of her own peotry. It contained alot of the words to her song and I knew those by heart already. So I still wont let go of the book but expected more.
