Book Description
As the human population inexorably grows, its cumulative impact on the Earth's resources is hard to ignore. The ability of the Earth to support more humans is dependent on the ability of humans to manage natural resources wisely. Because disturbance alters resource levels, effective management requires understanding of the ecology of disturbance.
This book is the first to take a global approach to the description of both natural and anthropogenic disturbance regimes that physically impact the ground. Natural disturbances such as erosion, volcanoes, wind, herbivory, flooding and drought plus anthropogenic disturbances such as foresty, grazing, mining, urbanization and military actions are considered. Both disturbance impacts and the biotic recovery are addressed as well as the interactions of different types of disturbance. Other chapters cover processes that are important to the understanding of disturbance of all types including soil processes, nutrient cycles, primary productivity, succession, animal behaviour and competition. Humans react to disturbances by avoiding, exacerbating, or restoring them or by passing environmental legislation. All of these issues are covered in this book.
Managers need better predictive models and robust data-collections that help determine both site-specfic and generalized responses to disturbance. Multiple disturbances have a complex effect on both physical and biotic processes as they interact. This book provides a wealth of detail about the process of disturbance and recovery as well as a synthesis of the current state of knowledge about disturbance theory, with extensive documentation.
Book Description
As an accomplished racer and a trained engineer, Paul Frre- Le Mans winner, Grand Prix driver, and Road & Track Magazine's European editor-is unusually qualified to discuss both the practical skills necessary to become a top driver and the physics behind vehicle dynamics. Indeed, as 1961 World Driving Champion Phil Hill remarks in his foreword, "It is the analytical ability of Paul the engineer matched to the perception of Paul the race driver that makes "Sports Car and Competition Driving" such a valuable book...Considerable amounts of time can be gained on track by a driver utilizing the countless lessons in this 'textbook'."
First published in 1963, "Sports Car and Competition Driving" sold tens of thousands of copies, establishing it as the definitive book on driving. Now Frre has revised and updated his classic to explain to drivers how to meet the new challenges posed by radical advances in technology.
Frre discusses the physical laws governing a car at speed, giving particular emphasis to the critical areas where the most time is won or lost: the corner. He also recommends proven approaches to practicing, setting up a car, qualifying, passing, and endurance racing-to name only a few of the many topics covered.
With 78 photographs, illustrations and diagrams, including historical shots of great drivers in competition, "Sports Car and Competition Driving" is required reading for anyone interested in racing or becoming a more masterful driver on the road.

Sports Car and Competition Driving (Driving).......2006-02-20
Interesting book. nice anecdotes. all the physics one might want to know is included in there too..
A very friendly book!.......2004-11-22
From the first glance, I liked that book much! It is written in a very friendly tone, clear language! It begins with a large chapter about the driving position; there are lots of photos with the right and wrong poses, with analysis of each case. The evolution of the correct driving position is also exposed. Then goes a chapter about power, torque and when to change the gear to achieve different goals: fuel economy, engine lifetime, maximum speed. After that there is a section about the correct braking and pedaling.
The author has dedicated a large topic of this book to quick and safe cornering, explaining the forces and vectors that act upon the axes and wheels; about the oversteer and understeer, about slipping, sliding and skidding. There are very simple and clear formulas to calculate the total adhesion of a wheel with the road.
The rest of the books is about the sport events: how to prepare and how to perform. Should the generic reader be aware of the contests, right?
The detailed reading of the book has shown some arguable points. For example, the author is glorifying the ABS in one chapter and writes about controlled slide in another chapter, not mentioning the controlled slide is hardly possible with ABS. It seems that the textual fragments which were added in the second edition of the book about the modern whistles-and-bells like ABS are not well aligned with the rest of the book (that's why four stars only) which Paul Frere has published in the first edition, and this original text about physics of cornering is just brilliant!
However, if you liked a better book about cornering and not filled with much information about sport events, I would have recommended numerous textbooks by Professor Tsygankov, who has even a separate textbook about the correct handling of the steering wheel. This subject is almost overlooked by Paul Frere.
Great book for drivers of all levels!.......2003-10-03
Although this book is clearly geared towards people with experience, there are pages dedicated to how to adjust your seat and the mirrors, when and how to brake, using the accelerator for best effect, etc. Everyone can learn something (or a lot) new from this book!
AMAZINGLY Technical!.......2002-04-13
This book is full of formulas for computing maximum theorhetical speed through corners, and the like. The information is presented in a way that people with several seasons under their belts could use, but definitely NOT for the beginner, unless you happen to also hold a PHD in physics. If you are considering writing a video game, THIS is the book for you. It has all the formulas you'll need to make your car handle realistically.
Interesting.......2000-06-22
Immediately after reading this book I start feeling better in my car driving seat. I became more calculated in my movements and avoid the stupid rush to go kind of things.

A Neat Book on Competition Driving.......2005-02-21
Alain Prost has published this book in co-authorship with Pierre-Francois Rousselot, a highly experienced and active driver, as well as an accomplished journalist. This book may be interesting for a motor sports beginner or just for a fan of competition driving. It is a quick glance throughout the Formula 1 world, yet a valuable source of information for a beginning racer or for someone interested in improving the driving skills. I've found the quality of print of this book is perfect, it has lots of very high-quality colour photographs.
Of course the book traditionally begins with the correct driving position and the handling of the steering wheel, both in Formula 1 car and in a rally car; then the authors proceed to braking and the correct use of the engine.
When it comes to choosing the perfect line, the authors reiterates the three-graded scale to categorize the corners by importance, originally published in 1971 in "Driving in Competition" by Alan Johnson, the 4-time SSCA National champion. But Alain Prost and Pierre-Francois Rousselot do not mention that it was Alan Johnson who has created this categorization, and they give no references or bibliography section in their book. According to this scale, the most important corners are leading to the straight, less important are followed by the straight, and the least important are corners that come between the other corners.
Unlike the other books on competition driving, this one pays attention to all three types of transmission when it comes to controlling car at the limit: the rear-wheel drive, the front-wheel drive and the four-wheel drive. I've found this chapter with the comparison of three transmission types very interesting. The authors explain the behaviors of different transmission for both slow corners (below 60-75 mph, or 95-120 km/h) and fast corners.
If you need a book about competition driving, a book with liveliness and variety, a book that you won't find boring, choose this one.
A MUST FOR THOSE WHO KNOW EVERYTHING.......2002-02-17
Just when I though that there was no more room for improvement in my aggressive driving, after a championship title in karting in my youth and 20 years driving an assorted lot of racing and so called super cars, here cames Prost with this little jewel filled with practical hints and advise. Folks I guarantee that you will not waste your money with this one. After all no one is proficient in every discipline ( want did I really know about rallye driving ?)

Book Description
You hold in your hands the ultimate trivia guide. Organized in thematic sections,
That Book covers a world of learning by an author whos developed game shows (he was the creator of the first "fastest-finger" game-show quiz) and was one of the original contributors to the international editions of Trivial Pursuit. Want to know which U.S. president is a descendant of King Edward III? Or which famous people lived to read their own obituaries?
That Book covers these inessential facts and more ...
Not since
Schotts Original Miscellany has there been such a delectable feast of useless information.
That Book is an encyclopedia of honest-to-god facts from the bizarre to the mundane that will have you alternately shaking your head in wonder and holding your sides in laughter. Bathroom -- or bedside -- reading just doesnt get any better than this -- or That.
Customer Reviews:
Gee; I didn't know that!.......2007-05-09
This little tome does an excellent job of what it proposes to be.
There is no way to tell exactly how many little facts that you will find in this gem of "useless" information;but there has got to be a thousand or more.. Facts are facts, and information is information;but who is to say what is "useful" and what is "useless"?
There is absolutely no crireria as to what should be included or excluded in a book like this. I guess, the one point that is important ,is that it is a factual bit of informtion. It is a great book for someone who has little or no attention span, someone who loves trivia, someone who likes to throw in a comment when someone else is doing all the talking and thinks they know it all. Absolutely nobody can know everything in the book and it is highly unlikely that anyone would know even 1% of what is contained between its covers.
A check of the Book Stats showed that the book has a Fog Index of 15.2. That is a surprisingly high Index for a book that is so simple to read and understand. I would have guessed it was 4 or 5.
A great little book to leave around for anyone from the age of 7 to 107 to kill a little time. It can be picked up,opened at any page and start reading.
Here's just a sampling of the kind of stuff you'll find here;
"Pricilla Presley became a mother again after becoming a grandmother."
"111,111,111 X 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321"
"Hijinks is the only word with three dotted letters in arow."
"Rod Stewart was a gravedigger before becoming famous."
"Elton John's real name is Reginald Dwight."
"Marilyn Monroe overcame a stammer."
"Tony Curtis served in the U.S. Navy in the Paciic, where he witnessed
the Japanese surrender."
"President George Bush was the U.S. Navy's youngest- ever fighter pilot.
He flew fifty-eight missions and was once shot down and rescued. He won
5 medals."
"Milke Love,Pancho Villa and Zsa Zsa Gabor each married 9 times outdoing Elizabeth Taylor (twice to the sameman),Mickey Rooney,Alan Jay Lerner and Artie Shaw;who each married 8 times."
"The elephant is the only mammal that can't jump;but is the only animal other than humans that can stand on its head.
"The most shoplifted book in the U.S. ...The Bible."
So, there you go, bet 'ya didn't know that;and the book is filled with just such earth shattering info.
Don't believe the others.......2007-04-10
Wow, a lot of these reviews are wrong. I'm not a kid, nor do I want to reveal my name on the internet. This book is so good at, well, "perfectly useless information." If people don't want to know the average person swallows 8 spiders in their lifetime, they don't have to but this book. I couldn't put it down, most of it is about celebrity stuff, but there is a lot of other good info. i got it for $9.99 at borders but this amazon price is unbeatable, buy all 3 and you can almost reach free shipping. They're definitely worth it, I couldn't put it down.
interesting..........2006-06-15
i thougth this book was pretty good, alot of things in it that i didn't know about before, some parts of the book like world wars and star track didn't catch my attention, but just about everything else did.
That book of perfectly inacurate information.......2006-01-25
This book is very interesting- some of the "facts" in this book were unbelievable! It turns out they were just that- untrue, such as...
*If you fart consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb.
*Humans swallow an average of 8 spiders in their lifetime during their sleep.
*The avarage sneeze travels at 600 mph.
I could go on and on... my point is, this book is full of unresearched claims that the author passes on as facts. If you want a book completely full of bull***, get this piece of trash. If you want the facts, get a book that actually at least researches claims before publishing them.
B-O-R-I-N-G Book of Useless Info.......2005-05-22
There are definitely better useless info books out there. This books is totally useless and boring - did not find anything of real interest. I advise purchasing ONLY if you see it at the 99 Cent Store. My 12 bucks was definitely too much for such rubbish.
