Great book to help give your kids tools for how to handel money as they grow older.
Money Management for Kids.......2000-03-31
If you are looking to have devotions at home, but do not know where to begin, stop looking. This book and the entire series are excellent. They teach biblical values through hands on expereince. As a pastor of a church, I am recommending this series to all members who have children. You do not need to know theology or know how to teach, just have a desire to set aside time one night per week and enjoy time teaching, learning and growing with your kids in a Christ centered fun way.

Boom Boom, Out Went The Lights.......2005-08-30
This series of essays, edited by and partially written by William Glen, provide readers interested in the Alvarez theory a snapshot of the debate between uniformitarians and catastrophists, as it stood in 1994. The authors include Digby McLaren, David Raup, and Victor Clube, and obviously includes essays by those either opposed to the concept of impact or by those who thought (or perhaps still think) that the impact at the K-T boundary did in fact take place, but didn't have any bearing on extinction.
This reviewer gives it four stars because, despite its quality, it is over ten years old. The debate still simmers, but over the long run, the impact model for mass extinction will become the only game in town. Saying, as some did or still do, that if all the volcanoes on Earth erupted simultaneously, sufficient iridium would have made it into the K-T boundary layer, used to be seen as a viable alternative. As we see, even in 1994, it had already been debunked.
This doesn't even consider the fact that, if the Chicxulub impact had no effect on Earth's species, the fact that so many plants and animals went extinct essentially immediately was just a huge coincidence. The alternative denial is to deny that mass extinction even took place. Gradual extinction was still being trumpeted back in 1994 when this book was published. It still can be seen here and there today, but is itself going extinct.
One reason this book is such an interesting read -- besides the frank expressions of the underlying assumptions on all sides -- is that it was published in the very year that all waited with breath abated for the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet fragments to impact on Jupiter. I doubt that a book of this kind would have been possible after those impacts, because those scars on the Jovian surface buried most of the opposition to the significance of impact.
The various fallback positions of those who denied any role for impact (and in some rare cases, continue to deny it) are seen fully formed even in 1994. The Deccan Traps, a large but otherwise unremarkable volcanic scar on the Earth, as well as other volcanic alibis for mass extinction, were already touted then, and had already been shown as fallacious in some of these essays.
It is only natural that impact is now seen as a uniformitarian phenomenon. This was predictable and predicted simply as a consequence to the politics of science. The late Eugene Shoemaker, codiscoverer of the SL-9 comets, is quoted in this book as supporting that idea. While it is ironic that random catastrophes have been co-opted into a uniformitarian framework, some of the thinking behind that co-opting can be seen in the essays by David Raup and others. The supposed periodicity of mass extinctions in the fossil record motivated Raup et al to look for various possible causes for showers of comets, a sort of Gouldian Punctuated Equilibria model based on causes from the skies. Even in 1994, none of those had held up. Since then, it has been purported that the Hubble Space Telescope has ruled out any stellar dark companion(s).
The Hubble hasn't shown the existence of the Oort Cloud, which is a necessity for most of the models claiming periodicity in the mass extinctions. The Oort Cloud is also a necessary prop for the nebular hypothesis of solar system formation. There's absolutely no evidence that it exists. For those who don't know or seem to care, the existence of a hypothesis isn't grounds to posit the existence of evidence.
Clube's contribution is a good place to start for those interested in Velikovsky, for reasons which should be obvious to readers of both. The book isn't a difficult read for most adults, although it may be a little dry in spots. There is adequate amusement from mischievously selected quotes from scientists pro and con, as well as the slapping around of uniformitarian biases.
While this review is of a hardcover edition available to this reviewer, the book remains in print as a paperback. Get it, read it, and enjoy.
Splendid Overview of Mass Extinction Debates.......2002-05-03
Geologist and historian of science William Glen has assembled an excellent overview on current research on mass extinctions, noting the anomosity which exists between advocates of comet/asteroid impact induced mass extinctions and their critics. This excellent volume is largely assembled from a history and philosophy of science symposium on mass extinctions held at Northwestern University. Major advocates such as paleontologists David Raup and J. John Sepkoski describe how their research led to their acceptance of the Alvarez team's impact theory as the cause for the end Cretaceous mass extinction, and their eventual discovery of periodicity of mass extinctions seen in the marine fossil record. On the other hand, skeptics such as John C. Briggs and William A. Clemens defend their objections to comet or asteroid impacts as the cause of mass extinctions. There are also insightful articles on the history and sociology of science as these pertain to the mass extinction debates.
Best balanced overview by the leading historian on subject.......1999-03-14
A reader from Aliso Viejo, CA Best balanced overview by the leading historian on subject Glen has studied the debates for 14 years and thus was able to provide an overview and analyses that only one with his expertise can provide. The acrimony and bitterness between the warring theoretical camps of scientists is wonderfully illumninated. The two major groups of debators believe that either an asteroid or comet on one hand, or massive volcanic eruptions on the other caused the death of the dinosaurs and most of other life on Earth. The story is excitingly told and seems to place the reader at the center of the storm of controversy that has raged for over a decade. Glen's two opening chapters make up a small book in themselves which explain the whole affair. This small book opens the larger anthology which also includes chapters by almost a dozen world-class leaders of various sciences including Stephen J. Gould. It is a wonderful work for both layman and scientist that shows both the science and the life of the scientists who struggle mightily to make their cases in an arena that seems to test both their intellects and emotional integrity. Glen notes that this work contains his larger conclusions briefly presented which he hopes to more fully detail in a future work. This is simply a fascinating, lucid, indispensible read for all interested in the subject--its hard to put down once begun.
Several reviews from leading journals & experts.......1998-01-14
From Geochemica et Cosmochemica Acta by Christian Koeberl, University of Vienna: "I found the book easy and fascinating to read--it was hard to put down, so I finished it in two long evenings and part of a day. This is one of those books that has something for everybody, and provides a very good account of how science progresses despite the efforts of some scientists. Glen's book is very well edited...thought provoking and makes for excellent reading (and discussing)...I want to reiterate that the book provides a good chronicle of an important part of the K-T boundary [debates] research, sets the whole debate in the framework of previous geological debates, and renders a lively picture of science in progress. I recommend this volume to practically everybody with an interest in the earth sciences...this volume should also make great reading for undergraduate and graduate seminars." From James W. McAllister, University of Leiden, the Netherlands: This semester I am giving a seminar course based on the book The Mass-Extinction Debates. The course has attracted biologists and physicists as well as a number of students of ours who are specializing in philosophy of science. I find that the book works very well in this role: I am especially pleased to be able to offer students a detailed picture of a concrete scientific controversy that is still unresolved...Thank for for a very interesting book that my students are enjoying." From Contemporary Sociology by Homer Le Grand, University of Melbourne: "Glen's deftly assembled and edited collection bears out the value of controvery studies as a window onto science. Glen contributes expository and analytic chapters in which he presents the first detailed examination of both arguments and the behavior of those actively engages in the [mass-exstinction debates]. Many...including some of the debaters themselves, will avidly turn to the...chapter in which Glen gives a precis of some of the lessons that he would draw from the debates thus far. Glen's presentation is notable for its clear explication, and its effective and arresting coupling of technical matters and social worlds. His analysis is particularlyu compelling because it is based upon a highly detailed longitudinal study... He avoids many of the traps by drawing freely upon his unrivaled archive of contemporaneous interviews, preprints, correspondence, and ephemera. This gives considerable depth to his comments about the cognitive and social importance specialization... This volume constitutes not only a valuable source of insights into a major, ongoing scientific controversy, but also a resource for those of us who will surely mine it to enrich our own sociological, philosophical, and historical models of scientific culture." From Choice by M.A. Wilson, College of Wooster:"This is a wonderful volume, highly recommended for all libraries and everyone in science or the philosophy [and sociology] of science.[Glen's] genius has been to record interviews and collect papers, preprints, and referee reports on the issue "as it has unfolded since 1980. He can thus provide an extraordinary view of how scientists work during a conceptual "crisis'. The analysis of the social dynamics affecting how disciplines and subdisciplines receive new ideas is fascinating, and the revelation of the levels of ignorance some scientists have as they state strong opinions on the issue is disturbing. Glen is a geologist, so he knows the subject and the main characters well, and he expresses complex issues in clear language. The book had many contributions, but those by Glen are the most interesting. An analysis of the impact hypothesis and "popular science" by Elizabeth Clemens is also well done. An excellent book for upper-division undergraduates or graduate students. All levels. Review by Joseph T. Gregory, University of California, Berkeley: "Readers from the natural sciences and also the history, sociology and philosophy of science will find this diversely-comprised book--that includes the first report of Bill Glen's pioneering, decade-long study of the mass-extinction debates--indispensable to understanding both the ideas of the conflicted science and the behavior of scientists in this ongoing upheaval." Science Books and Films: "Exceptionally well organized by its editor William Glen, the book illustrates how many passionately different points of view there are...and makes it exceedingly interesting for the reader to observe how proponents' views evolve over time...and also observe the evolution of theories relating to such topics... The book will serve as an excellent introduction to the subject. The editor is to be commended for making it possible to evaluate a topic analytically from the standpoint of several disciplines."
Excellent book showing the clash of individual convictions.......1996-07-17
Dr. William Glen, in his book The Mass Extinction Debates: How Scinece Works in a Crisis, shows how the conclusions of many scientists often differ. Each scientist believes that their theory is correct and thus stands by their ideas. This can often culmunate into several groups of scientists working to verify their hypothesis.
The mass extinction debates were a group of conferences designed to get to the bottom of the most famous mass extinction, 65 million years ago, which wiped out the dinosaurs. Was it a comet, climate or volcanism? Each scientist in the book presents their views in a language that is very accesible to the lay person. The reader becomes drawn into the debates when each new conclusion becomes a logical possibility.
The power, whether manifested from within the earth as volcanism or from space as a comet, had to be strong enough to eleiminate everything over 50 pounds from the face of the earth. The theories presented offer a window into the strongest and most dynamic forces of physics. The book does not represent a viewpoint of its own. Rather, it presents the arguments for the reader to review, digest and contemplate.
The attraction to this book comes from the readers realization that a mass extinction is possilbe today. The cause of such extinctions is intriquing. The book swept me away and I reccommend it highly.

Book Description
The coastal tropics comprise some of the most sensitive and yet the most understudied ecosystems in the world. Coastal plains and river valleys are also home to agriculture on a vast scale, and it is not surprising to find that streams and rivers receive the majority of agricultural runoff, carrying the residues of insecticides, fungicides and other pesticides into estuaries and coastal zones. There is a growing awareness of the urgent need to develop strategies to help productive, healthy and economically viable agriculture to coexist with natural resources. Pesticide Residues in Tropical Coastal Ecosystems brings together toxicology experts from around the world to assess pesticide burdens in many of the major food-producing tropical countries. It provides a unique set of case studies, chronicling pesticide usage and its ecotoxicological impact in coastal regions. A practical guide to recent research findings and applications, it is essential reading for environmental professionals, ecotoxicologists, marinechemists and agrochemists.

Fabulous Five Freshmen.......2006-04-10
"What scares you Jalen? Death, said Jalen,... because I can't imagine a world without me in it." The cockiness that was the Fab Five is captured perfectly by Mitch Albom in his book the Fab Five; Basketball, Trash Talk and the American Dream. Like Albom's other books Tuesdays with Morrie and 5 People You Meet in Heaven, his story telling engulfs the reader and transforms a normal story into a legendary tale. Albom recognizes the important interaction between people in their actions and conversations and captures that in his writing. This story, the Fab Five, was a great book and one of the best for any sports fan. The "Greatest Class Ever Recruited", as Albom called them, is a great story that is told from behind the scenes, during the Fab Five's historic career at the University of Michigan. The Fab Five by Albom is the finest sports book because Albom's humorous and stylish writing brings to life the events surrounding five freshmen that transformed college basketball.
The Fab Five is a book about Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson, the fabulous five freshmen at the University of Michigan. A group assembled in many different ways, each contributing a unique story to what brought them to Ann Arbor. Albom takes his first few chapters describing the intricate lines that connected each player to Ann Arbor. Jalen and Chris were from Detroit and went to UofM because they were always best friends. Ray Jackson and Jimmy King are from Texas. Ray Jackson was noticed accidentally while scouts were in Texas recruiting other players. For Jimmy King, he came to UofM because Juwan Howard, his roommate on a recruiting trip, was going. And to put it all together, Juwan became a Michigan Wolverine because his recently diseased grandmother wanted him to go to UofM. Together they became the Fab Five and marched their way on campus and took the college basketball world by storm making it to back-to-back NCAA men's national championship appearances.
The caliber of talent that sounds this book is one for the history books. However, the Fab Five would not be the book it was without the writing and story telling ability of Mitch Albom. Albom has been voted the number one sports writer an unprecedented seven times by the Associated Press Sports Editors. He has hosted a TV show on ESPN and written many famous books as well as a sports column for the "Detroit Free Press". His ability to touch every reader regardless of background is rare. He makes people cry reading Tuesdays with Morrie and people stand up in cheer for the `91 Michigan basketball team in the Fab Five. Undoubtedly, Albom is one of the best writers in American and is writing about one of the best sports teams America has ever witnessed.
Albom accurately describes the sequence of events leading five high school seniors to main-stream college freshman superstars. But one of the things that makes this story one for the ages is that while on many teams today it is rare to see two freshmen starting a game, in 1991 the Fab Five were five freshman players who all started on a team that made it to the NCAA men's Championship basketball game. Having five freshman start a national championship game is unheard of and still to this day, unmatched. Albom predicts, "There will never be another group like the Fab Five." Through what brought them to Michigan, through every behind the scenes event, through every exciting and electrifying game, this book comes to life in front of the readers' eyes. As the book progresses the plot thickens for these young athletes as if Albom himself wrote the story. Every big game and tournament game was commentated as if live from the radio. Albom writes, "And with 21 seconds left, Michigan lead by just a basket, 71-69. `No three-point-shots,' fisher yelled." The games brought a sense of involvement for the reader taking them back in time to the game. With writing style that is clear and descriptive, and while combined with the dazzling games provided by the Michigan Basketball team, this leads to a suspenseful, well illustrated book that makes the heart pump and adrenaline rush. While watching the suspenseful games, Albom knew greatness at the very moment it happened and was there to preserve ever moment of history in his book; a book about kids who became "The Greatest Class Ever Recruited."
They had become the most popular names and faces in college basketball. In Ann Arbor, they sold jerseys and shorts for a hundred and fifty dollars total; "They sold out in a heartbeat," Albom wrote. Stories like these make this book different than any other sports book, a book written while the events occurred with detailed stories nobody else could get. He also wrote about that one game they all walked onto the court with their fashionably baggy shorts, black socks and black shoes revolutionizing college basketball, and he was there to catch every story and detail. Black socks, black shoes and baggy shorts all surprised people watching college basketball. Later looking back, people would contribute these five freshmen as revolutionizing basketball and creating its image today. Albom knew this and felt it was necessary to capture their uniqueness in this book. Mitch Albom, like the rest of the world knew greatness while it was happening and the passion and enthusiasm that he wrote with to illustrate that greatness he was witnessing is another example of why this book is so fabulous.
Albom also included inside stories, taking the reader to a place only a few were able to see. Inside the games, inside the practices and inside the family that was the Fab Five. When Jalen walked in the first day as a freshman and announced, "Freshmen verse ya'll," everyone in the gym was stunned. Where most freshmen come in to find themselves at the bottom of the barrel, these freshmen came in and ran right to the top. After saying, "Freshmen verse ya'll," the five freshman went on to win three scrimmages against the upper classmen. Albom wrote, "The Fab Five has been born." While many people could watch the televised games and see for themselves the spectacle surrounding these freshmen, he took this audience backstage and incorporated these stories that give the reader more than they could otherwise see. Stories about crazy pranks to trash talking rants and bizarre interviews to the baggy shorts and black socks and shoes, is why Fab Five gives the reader more than a sports book. It gives the reader a legendary, and even though no previous knowledge is necessary a substantial amount of time is essential because putting the book down once the readers starts if difficult.
The Fab Five is a humorous, entertaining and well written book, but furthermore, it is an inside look at one of the greatest college basketball stories. Mitch Albom, as one of America's most heralded writers, gives one of his best writing performances for his perfectly illustrated, historical tale of "The Greatest Recruiting Class Ever." He captivated my attention and sparked my interest in Michigan Basketball because of his urban style humor and story telling ability. While most other historical accounts tend to be boring, Mitch Albom captivates his readers and provides one of the best books about sports; a must read for any sports fan. Albom quoted Jalen Rose, "they'll be talking about us for 20 years." This is true about the Fab Five and the Fab Five will be talked about for many years to come
No doubt........2004-12-24
With all the kids going to the pros now this book just gets more and more interesting. College hoops may never be the same as it was when the fab five were together. Although it may be wrong to say they were the reason for so many changes, they were certainly style agents of the nth degree. No doubt about the power of youth and potential and Albom captures all of it with a lot of excitement and enjoyment.
The Greatest Basketball Team Ever Assembled............2004-03-28
This book is excellent by far. I read this book whenever I'm bored, and it still excites me to this day. I can just flashback and remember what I was doing during the time the Fab Five was wrecking havoc on the college hardwoods. I still believe dat dis book is the greatest book Mitch Albom has ever written. He's already my favorite sports columnist in the world. Just like another person typed, if you love basketball buy this book. If you don't still buy this book, because you will grow to love college basketball.
One of the best sports books ever.......2004-01-17
This is an amazing in-depth look at the most popular and ballyhooed basketball team ever, Michigan's Fab Five. As a huge maize-and-blue fan I have read this masterpiece countless times but it shows all the details of running a major basketball program, the troubles that Steve Fisher had to deal with, and talks about the complex lives that Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson led and lead. Pickthis one up now.
Unbelievable.......2003-12-17
Mitch Albom is supposedly a newspaper writer and journalist. Yet somehow he managed not to notice the fact the subjects of this book (The Fab Five) were paid over $600,000 to attend the University of Michigan.
This means that either:
A. Mitch knew about the payments and therefore all the material he wrote concerning the Michigan basketball program is suspect because he was in on the coverup.
OR
B. Mitch didn't know about the payments and therefore all the material he wrote concerning the Michigan basketball program is suspect because he didn't even notice that the college kids he was covering were being paid over a half million dollars to play basketball.
Book Description
During her many years of teaching introduction to fiction courses, Ann Charters developed an acute sense of which stories work most effectively in the classroom. She also discovered that writers, not editors, have the most interesting and useful things to say about the making and the meaning of fiction. Accordingly, her choice of fiction in the first edition of her The Story and Its Writer was as notable for its student appeal as it was for its quality and range. And to complement these stories, she introduced a lasting innovation: an array of the writers' own commentaries on the craft and traditions of the short story. In subsequent editions her sense of what works was confirmed as the book evolved into the most comprehensive, diverse-- and bestselling -- introduction to fiction anthology. Instructors rely on Ann Charters' ability to assemble an authoritative and teachable anthology, and anticipate each edition's selection of new writers and stories.

An Outstanding Collection of Stories and Writers.......2007-05-18
This anthology was something I stumbled upon in college and completely changed the way I approached reading and writing. The stories are a wide variety and the writers writing about writing is a fantastic resource. This is one of the most precious pieces to my library and a must for any serious reader and writer.
Great!!!.......2006-07-16
My book arrived when it said it would and it was in perfect condition. Thanks.
Course Book I Actually Want to Keep Reading.......2006-05-29
This compilation of short stories was used for my Intro. to the Short Story college course. Our professor only picked out certain stories but I found myself reading unassigned stories myself. Some of these stories are wonderful. My favorite was "The Widow's Son" by Mary Lavin. Some other noteworthy stories: "Hills Like White Elephants" Hemingway, "Girl" by J. Kincaid. Too many more to list, a course book I am actually keeping so I can finish reading it. Usually I can't wait to close them after the course and not see them anymore! :)
Nice Job.......2006-02-28
This is a very comprehensive compilation of the most important classic short stories as well as some newer stories from today's writers. I thought the book was very well organized, especially with the case files and interviews that accompany several of the stories.
There are a few omissions of some classics but nonetheless I felt it was a very good collection.
A must have if studying Fiction.
Teaching manual at its best.......2005-11-30
Charters' book is both a great read and a valuable teaching tool. The book lives up to its title: it successfully places the emphasis on the story and its writer rather than on the story and its editor or the story and its teacher. As a textbook/anthology this is sure to be more helpful - and interesting - to students than to read a lot of pedagogical and prescriptive information from a secondhand source. Whether you are a teacher or a student, new to the short story or old hand, the opportunity to read about writers' processes and intentions firsthand is invaluable, and Charters' selection of short stories is exceptional. Charters obviously cares about the project of teaching the short story well, and her dedication shines through in this volume.

Book Description
An Indispensable Reference of Air, Soil, and Water Pollutants This second edition of Environmental Toxicology focuses on the biological and health effects toxins have on living organisms. It also stresses the relationship between human activity and the environment, relating changes in the environment with the changing patterns of human diseases, and exploring the parallels between developing economies and pollution-related health problems. The book deals with a large number of environmental toxicants, discussing their damage process, metabolism (biotransformation), and metabolism, toxicants and their damage process, and environmental, biological, and nutritional factors that may influence toxicity. It also describes several natural defense systems and the mechanisms for detoxification, including endogenous antioxidants and free radical scavenging enzymes on a cellular level. The book continues its comprehensive analysis of EPA Criteria Air Pollutants (SO2, NO2, O3, CO, particulate matter), and volatile organic compounds, as well as soil and water pollution, and expands the chapters on fluoride, environmental metals and metalloid (lead, cadmium, mercury, nickel, and arsenic), pesticides and related material such as PCBs and dioxins, and their relationship with endocrine disruption (a new chapter) and environmental cancer, offering more insight on the interaction of various chemical agents with DNA. Based on research from nearly 30 years of teaching environmental toxicology and related courses, the author concludes this text with an introduction to ecological risk assessment and its role in regulation and policymaking.
