Book Description

"A vision of what could (and probably should) be. . . . The reader may want to revisit some sections for further reflection."
--Educational Leadership

"An excellent book that offers much to the seasoned administrator and should be on the list of required reading for introductory administration classes."
--NASSP Bulletin

Moral Leadership shows how creating a new leadership practice--one with a moral dimension built around purpose, values, and beliefs--can transform a school from an organization to a community and inspire the kinds of commitment, devotion, and service that can make our schools great. Sergiovanni explains the importance of legitimizing emotion and getting in touch with basic values and connections with others. He reveals how true collegiality, based on shared work and common goals, leads to a natural interdepAndence among teachers and shows how a public declaration of values and purpose can help turn schools into virtuous communities where teachers are self-managers and professionalism is considered an ideal.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An absolute must for teachers and principals........1999-07-22

With this book, Sergiovanni has assembled a "covenant of shared values," a way of "expanding the value structure of and authority bases for leadership" in such a way that the reader can have a "powerful set of ideas for influencing what and how people think and feel."

Being an assistant English teacher-I teach English at the middle school level for the City of Naha, Okinawa, Japan-and having aspirations to eventually become a "full-time" teacher at the high school level, I chose to do a review on this book about the roll of leadership in public education. I feel that it is a very good book, both insightful and educational...although I did find it a little "over my head" in some of both content and the context in which it was written. This book, Moral leadership: getting to the heart of school improvement, would make a valuable addition to the guidance resource pool of anyone who cares about our children and the education system that is preparing them to be productive members of adult society.

About the Author-- Thomas J. Sergiovanni, Lillian Radford Professor of Education at Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas, has an extensive education history backing up his work: BA degree from the State University of New York in 1958, MA degree from Teachers College, Columbia University in 1959, and his Ed.d. Degree from the University of Rochester in 1966.

He has also built up quite an impressive work and experience history as well: he was an elementary school teacher from 1958 to 1964, a science consultant in New York state, a teacher in the teacher education program at the State University of New York, and he gave nineteen years of service to the faculty of educational administration at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign starting in 1966 (he chaired the department for seven years). He now teaches at the Trinity University in the leadership program and in the five-year teacher education program. He is the director of the Trinity Principals' Center as well as being the senior fellow at the Center for Educational Leadership. He has served in an editorial capacity for several teaching and leadership publications and has also published many other books about leadership and schooling: "Schooling for Tomorrow: Directing Reforms to Issues that count (1989, with John Moore), Value-Added Leadership: How to Get Extraordinary Performance in Schools (1990), and The Principalship: A Reflective Practice Perspective (1991, second addition)," are a few among his recent works. Along with all of this experience and education, Sergiovanni also apparently has "broad interest in school leadership and the supervision and evaluation of teaching," to bring to his aid in creating valuable resource materials for those involved in education.

Target Audience of the Book-- According to the author, in the introduction of the book, this work was basically intended to serve as a guide for developing moral leadership in schools, from the top down: superintendents, supervisors, principles, and any other persons at the upper levels of school management. The author's design was to provoke thoughts and raise questions in the minds of these people which would help them to analyze the leadership processes in their schools and to help them make adjustments to the leadership process that will in the end reduce the need for "direct" leadership in favor of "moral" leadership. He also makes point that this book can serve as a "counterpoint" to some of the textbooks, currently being used in university courses on leadership. He also states that the book would be useful for parents, school board members and policy makers. Because I am involved in the education process from the "teaching" point of the educational continuum, I see this book as being of particular value to other teachers and myself as well. If "leadership is a process," consisting of and reliant upon the presence of THREE distinct yet interactive elements: the leader, the followers, and the situation, then I feel that the information contained in the book-especially that concerning motivation of teachers, making a school a "learning community," and the importance of collegiality-is very pertinent to the views and understandings from a teacher's standpoint. This book is for anyone who cares about improving the leadership in our schools. Scope of the Work-- The aspects of leadership covered are very broad, from analyzing the traditional leadership rolls, to the tapping of higher and higher levels of human potential. It is written from the standpoint of managers and leaders and covers point by point the author's ideas of how to shift the environment of schools from that of a "factory" to one of community of leaning. The time period of the book, is of course modern, but the ideals expressed are timeless, those of using one's heart and compassion-"living school"-in leadership rather than just being concerned with the facts and figures involved-"playing school." I feel that this work will be of value as long as we have systems that require leadership, any systems, and not just schools. The viewpoint of the author, I feel, is that he is concerned about the leadership processes in schools that are presently accepted as the norm. The author would like to see school leadership shift to one that is self-motivated by teachers who want to do a good job, not one in that the teachers feel they have to as a result of dependency on "extrinsic" rewards.

4 out of 5 stars Very profound ideas about changing school administration.......1999-05-19

There are some profound ideas in this book about how a school should be run. I particulary enjoyed the "substitutions for leadership". If you are a school administrator you should probably read this book.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good resource for teachers.......2007-06-22

"Brain Based Strategies to Reach Every Learner" by Diane Connell, Ed.D. is a worthwhile resource for teachers who want an overview of the principles of some important psychological theories and how they apply to lesson plans in the classroom. For example, the book offers strategies for visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners and the importance of using lesson plans that reach each type of student. Other ideas include memory strategies. Often children may be asked to simply memorize information (e.g. the 50 states), but may have difficulty simply memorizing or may forget the information after a short time. The book offers some excellent ideas (based on memory research) to help a child to put information into long-term memory from working memory. Other topics include Gardner's nine factor theory of intelligence. Once again, it describes Gardner's theory (which is an excellent one by the way), and offers suggestions in the classroom to reach kids with various strengths (e.g. musical intelligence) which are not consistently measured in traditional school curriculums on a consistent basis. The book begins with basic brain anatomy and discussion of left and right brained learners. The reader will probably find some new ideas to apply to lesson plans and in using these ideas may be able to reach more nontraditional learners.

Are you a Theory X manager . . . or a Theory Y manager? Unleash a motivation model as powerful today as it was over 40 years ago

The Management Styles Questionnaire will shed new light on your management style using Douglas McGregor's two highly influential ways of viewing people's motivation in the workplace:

Theory X assumes people are lazy, dislike and shun work, lack ambition, dislike responsibility and prefer to be led.
Theory Y assumes people have a psychological need to work, and want achievement and responsibility.
The simple, 30-question assessment provides a valuable picture of how you prefer to deal with things in the workplace, particularly your attitude and relationships with other people. There are no wrong or right answers—the Management Styles Questionnaire is an assessment, not a test.

Included is a guide to how Theory X style managers and Theory Y style managers are likely to perform in 12 management competencies drawn from the Managerial Assessment of Proficiency or MAP assessment.

                Product Description

The crisis of the rainforest began a century ago when it was discovered to be a source of rubber. This brought commercial interests into collision with this complex ecology - its plants, its animals and its peoples. At the height of the rubber boom in the early years of this century, a young American, John Yungjohan, struggled for survival as a rubber cutter. The diaries he kept have recently come to light and have been edited by Sir Ghillean Prance of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, England, one of the foremost botanical gardens in the world. Dr. Prance is a leading expert on the rainforest. The diaries are especially poignant now since the rubber cutters are fighting to preserve something of the original forest against the ravages of the indiscriminate destruction which still ignores the true wealth of the region - its almost incomprehensible variety of species. It is a tale of humanity and the natural order working together in the midst of greed and ignorance. Ghillean Prance enhances the text with his own contemporary photographs and identifies the fungi, plants and animals which are mentioned in the pages of the diaries.

How Yungjohann got to So. America is a mystery. But he worked on a coffee plantation from 1896-1906 and had set his eyes on cutting rubber to make some money. Going up the Amazon in a steam boat he finally arrived at the mouth of the Xapuri and hooks up with seven men to cut rubber on contract. A month longer up the river, in a canoe, with a guide, finds the group on the banks of the Rio Acre trying to hack out a piece of jungle to make a home. They cut rubber trees, bleeding them, as a fever begans to decimate their ranks. In two months Yungjohann is alone having buried all his compadres. He struggles on, fighting animals and disease--He would find 18 foot boas sleepng on his chest when he awoke in the morning, which screemed like cats when he moved...But did he make money? No. his supplies cost him more than he made. He went out again for eight months, with new men, who also died. For ten years he perseverd in the wilds of the Amazon. The men he met, what he learned in the jungle and camps makes for reading found in no other book. This is the man's diary. IT'S TOO SHORT!

                      5 out of 5 stars A streamside gem.......2006-12-17

This little book is unique. It combines high quality photos of most of the New England streamside insects trout love to eat with examples of imitations we hope they'll try. The author, a professional photogapher, avid fly fisherman and amateur entomologist, has devised means to capture the appearance of these tasty bugs in perfect detail as they develop from their origins on the stream bottom to their emerging stages in the biologic drift to their mature forms, winged and mating on and above the surface. This book fits in a zip lock sandwich baggy in your hip pocket, and paired with your curiosity on the water, you will get streamside bug savvy and catch more trout.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Vest or Bench.......2003-10-14

This is not only a great streamside reference but nice to keep near the fly tying bench when attempting to match the hatch. There are excellent high quality photos of the bugs on the left hand side with info about the bugs habitat, etc... Also you get pictures of at least three corresponding flies with tips on how to fish them. The book covers Caddis, Mayflies, Stones, Terrestrials. I fish mainly in North Carolina and find the book extremely helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Peace Corp YAY.......2007-04-05

This book is amazing. If you have any questions about joining the peace corp this book will answer alomst everything about the experience. From the application process down to returning to the US. I am glad that i bought this book because it answer alot of my questions, and also made me think about other ones that i had not thought of before. Now more than ever i know that i am prepard to join the peace corp and i am really glad that i bought this book. i would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about applying to the peace corp, or someone who is in the appplication process.
This book is just questions and answer which is great because although the author gives us his experience, that does not dominate the book, he answer questions that everyone has about the peace corp, using his experience and the experiences of other Return Peace Corp Volunteers. Like i said whether you are thinking about applying or you are in the middle of your application process you should read this book!

5 out of 5 stars Tells you everything it could.......2006-04-17

I read this book while going through the application process for the Peace Corps, and then found a copy of it in my host country while serving. Several other volunteers and I sat down and read pieces out loud to each other, expecting a good laugh, and were surprised at how good we still found it. It is very thorough and very accurate. As to one reviewer's note that it left them with unanswered questions - well, you must understand, even within one host country, people have very different experiences, and the Peace Corps is in about 80 countries. What this book doesn't tell you, you can't - and don't need to - know beforehand. Read it, pack lightly, and go with an open mind.

                      5 out of 5 stars Great Information.......2006-02-21

I am considering joining the Peace Corps and this book provided me with all the information and answered so many of the questions about joining. Is very honest and straight forward about consequences and advantages. Awesome insight! Recommend this book highly for anyone curious to know the real truths behind joining the Peace Corps.

I was hooked on the story from the very begining,it had a powerful pull where i needed to know what happened, but the best part to me was where cole and his brother came to terms with christmas i hope Christine Feehan will do a sqeul of this fine story

                      4 out of 5 stars A great read.......2004-11-21

I almost gave this 5 stars but the second novalla was a little weak. I've been disappointed with the last several books by Feehan so I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Cole is a very interesting character and the Vet is just as compelling. The mystery was a little too tidy but still interesting.

5 out of 5 stars EXCITING BOOK, GREAT READING.......2004-11-01

Cole Steele has come back to his abusive father's ranch, to try to salvage the 14 year old brother he never knew he had. Brett Cole was a controling abusive monster. Now Cole who is as damaged as Jase, must try to give the attention to his brother that was never given to him. He is a loner himself and doesn't know how to open himself to anyone.

Jase is so untrusting he can't even let himself hope. Their father killed anything they showed interest in, whatever, an animal or a friendship. Beatings, brandings, and both think he killed their mothers.

Maia Armstrong is a traveling vet. She does not stay anywhere too long because people begin to think she is strange. She seems to have an affinity for animals almost as though she can talk to them. She can calm the meanest animal and sheds warmth wherever she goes. Cole meets her in town and is fasinated by her. But she knows a predator when she sees one.

Strange things are happening at the ranch, while Cole is in town Jase calls to tell him one of the horses has crashed into a fence. The one Jase has let himself become attached to. Cole rushs Maia and her portable clinic to the ranch. They arrive ahead of a major snowstorm and are stranded on the ranch.

Can one woman full of love and understanding reach these two lost souls, can she somehow see and reach in to calm two hurting hearts and redeem what has been beaten out of them?

Can Cole discover who murdered their father and why? What secrets live in the cold murkiness of the house and ranch?

This is one of Christine Feehan's best novellas. I was delighted and warmed by this sensitive insightful story.

Susan Sizemore gives us a werewolf Christmas story. Harry, a werewolf is hunting for 5 missing cubs. The trail leads to Marj Piper, a vet, she also can talk to animals. Harry an alpha male, finds in Marj an alpha female. Between searching for the missing youngsters and seduceing Marj, we have an interesting view of Christmas in a small mountain town.

5 out of 5 stars A touch of Magick for a cold day.......2004-11-01

Christine Feehan once again creates a magickal world of love and healing. This time a lonely man struggling to over come his past abuse at the hands of his own father, and help a younger brother do the same, meets a most unusual healer in the form of the local vet. Her amazing ability with animals is nothing compaired to her ability to bring warmth and love into their lives. Maia turns Cole on but can he let his wall's down to trust her ?
In the second book, Harry a man with a heart of gold is also a man with an unusual problem, he becomes a wolf. You will love this unusual story of love. A great read for a cold winters day
