5 out of 5 stars Exceptional. Recommended without reservations.......1996-08-20

Baker contends that networking isn't just for job-hunters or for the self-employed: *everyone* needs this critical set of skills to survive the 1990s and beyond. Lucidly explaining his claims--and backing them up with plenty of solid scientific evidence--he covers, among other things, basic networking principles; the salutary effects (including, for individuals, improved promotion prospects, salary levels, and even physical and mental health; for organizations, improved quality, reputations, and bottom lines) of well-established and well-maintained networks; managing relationships with peers, subordinates, and superiors within an organization; breaking bottlenecks and building bridges between organizational units; encouraging creativity; tapping the power of diversity; networking throughout the organizational life cycle; and managing relationships outside an organization. The latter section discusses how to use networking to find good people to hire; to change jobs; to establish relationships with customers and clients; to develop positive word-of-mouth in marketing; to build partnerships with suppliers; and to co-operate with competitors. There's also a description of how to start or join a networking club. Each chapter concludes with practical lists of actions you can take now, soon, and in the long run. An exceptional contribution to a burgeoning sub-genre: Baker proves that networking has truly come of age as a powerful and empowering force in business.

      Book Description

This breakthrough analysis of several advanced, exceptionally productive, and motivating organizational cultures is based on interviews with employees--from shop floor workers to CEOs--to discover precisely what makes them so effective. These positive case studies, illuminated by the executive perspective in each situation, tell fascinating stories of how these exciting cultures were formed, developed, or evolved to meet the challenges created by the firms' growth and success. Haasen and Shea also examine the recent history of four negative examples of conventional organizations that have imploded, regressed, suffered from malaise, or been sidetracked by their executives. A new concept of employee ownership emerges from the studies, one that is not primarily financial in nature but instead revolves around the idea of joint responsibility for decisions and actions. That basis leads to more collaborative teamwork, less reliance on hierarchy, and a greater sense of involvement in key strategy formulation. Managers are transformed from out-of-touch "bosses" into important resources to their people. The work environment of these new corporate cultures is characterized by mutual respect and support. The result is a stimulating, "fun" place to work, which in turn leads to greater productivity and lower turnover costs.

            Book Description

In this book, an easily understandable account of modelling methods with artificial neuronal networks for practical applications in ecology and evolution is provided. Special features include examples of applications using both supervised and unsupervised training, comparative analysis of artificial neural networks and conventional statistical methods, and proposals to deal with poor datasets. Extensive references and a large range of topics make this book a useful guide for ecologists, evolutionary ecologists and population geneticists.

3 out of 5 stars Good information -- Poor editing.......2001-04-01

The information content in this book makes it well worth the price. I bought it because I am using the technique in my research and thought it might provide some good references and possibly some pointers on applications. It did that. Unfortunately, this important contribution is marred by bad editing and poor English usage. Almost every chapter contains what I can only assume are mistranslated words and confusing sentence structure. The book could have benefited greatly from an English-speaking copy editor.

            Book Description

"An Angler's Guide to Aquatic Insects and Their Imitations" helps you identify the insects that trout and other fish feed on in streams and lakes across the country. This fully illustrated guide leads you step by step through the identification process. Then, after you make an indentification, you'll find a list of fly patterns that match the natural, supplemented by information about the insect's life cycle, habitat preferences, and specific flyfishing tactics to help you imitate its behavior.

The information in this book will help you solve the most basic flyfishing problem—finding out what the fish are feeding on and being able to match the insect and its behavior in the water. Best of all, no prior knowledge of entomology is required to use this guide. All you need to start is an aquarium net, a pair of tweezers, a few vials, the white lid off a pickle jar, and a desire to become a more knowledgeable, more successful flyfisher.

4 out of 5 stars Microinvertibrates for Piscators!.......2007-05-30

Thisa book is short and to the point aout the different genre of aquadic insects in most waters. Since the author does promote himself to Fishermen, especially Fly Fishermen, the work is not so much of a scientific study -even thought it reads like one- this book does the trick when you want to know the basic info about microinvertibrates and aquatic insects.
This book does belong on every Fly Fisherman's book shelf especially if they tie their own flies.

5 out of 5 stars Clear and concise. Written for the fly fisher........1998-12-28

Although this will not ensure the identification of a collected specimen it will let you know what type it is, for the most common found, and it's basic behavour. A great book for the beginner,

5 out of 5 stars The guide provides basic taxonomy for the layperson........1998-11-24

This guide allows an observant non-biologist to classify many nymphs, emergers and adult acquatic insects.

Besides the book you will need a good pocket loup, a small net, a collection bottle and a complete lack of squeemishness.

This book does much of the work of Schweibert's excellent Matching The Hatch in a far more basic and compact package. If you are a trout / steelhead fly-fisher and you want to expand your knowledge of the dinner faire of our favorite salmonids -- this is an excellent place to start.

            Book Description

Are you looking to escape the hustle and bustle of urban living? Peachtree Publishers has the guide for you!

A new trend emerged in the 1990s: a shift of city dwellers from metropolitan areas to small towns and cities. This trend is particularly evident in the South, as this region has attracted more growth, second homes, and increases in income and education levels. Frustrated with city traffic, air pollution, crowded suburbs, and declining quality of life, city dwellers are seeking desirable, small Southern towns.

Finding the best community, however, can be a challenge. THE 50 BEST SMALL SOUTHERN TOWNS is just the place to start your search. Authors Gerald W. Sweitzer and Kathy M. Fields researched and personally visited over 150 sites to give you this comprehensive relocation guidebook with helpful information on the fifty best small Southern towns in nine Southeastern states. In order to be featured in the book, each town had to meet stringent qualifications: population under 25,000, positive population growth, readily available cultural and recreational attractions, adult education opportunities, healthcare options, and Internet access.

            Information on each town includes:
            · Directions for getting there
            · Housing options
            · Recreational highlights
            · Cultural scene
            · Natural environment
            · Economic and education profiles
            · Healthcare
            · Vital statistics (climate, median incomes, etc.)

The appendix offers quick reference charts showing facts and features for each town. Perfect for anyone considering an alternative to city living.

4 out of 5 stars Useful facts about lesser-known places.......2003-10-05

This informative volume describes a number of towns that would otherwise surely go unnoticed by the non-Southerner. Basic population, economic and climate data are followed by descriptive sections on recreation, housing, health resources, and the like. An occasional anecdote or personal interview might have added a bit of color, but this is a more complete book than most others about those charming, artistic, or undiscovered places we want to find out about, and it may be the only one of its kind on the South. I am happy to own it.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reading.......2002-10-08

The perfect reader for southern enthusiast and small town living fans. Does an excellent job of describing, in deatail, the towns and their enviroments. Gives me a years worth of weekend trips at my fingertips. A must read!

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Resource.......2002-09-13

Most people spend more time planning where to spend their vacations than they do deciding where to spend their lives (or their retirements). Fortunately for us, the authors of this book have done a huge portion of the legwork for us: finding the best small southeastern towns, evaluating them through a set of clearly defined and excellent criteria, visiting each one, and gathering relevant information to help us not only decide where to go, but to also help us connect to the community once we get there. I would be lost without this book, not even knowing where to begin. The books is also well-written, engaging in style, and easy to use. For example, you can skip sections you're less interested in because there are frequent headers common for each town, and you can also search towns by state, climate, geography (e.g., coast or mountains), and other factors of interest.

            ...

5 out of 5 stars A charming guide to good living in small southern towns.......2002-03-03

This is a very handy, concise and yet comprehensive guide to help in your search for that delightful Southern town offers good quality of life and yet within reach of a city's conveniences.

There are useful statistical highlights, Cost Of Living index and web links. The books provide information on the community, eateries, attractions, education, etc.

I would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a guidebook to assist in their search for a delightful town to re-locate and live.

              Book Description

There’s more to the arms, artillery, and exotic equipment of the Star Wars galaxy than Jedi lightsabers and blasters. Species such as the tree-dwelling Wookiees, the amphibious Gungans, and the deadly Yuuzhan Vong have yielded a staggering array of unique weapons and devices. And as the Star Wars mythos continues to grow–in prequels and video games, on screen, in print, and beyond–these remarkable technical creations also multiply and evolve.

The New Essential Guide to Weapons and Technology is the fully updated and greatly expanded reference resource that organizes and explains every key class, make, and model of Star Wars munitions–from the smallest personal sidearms to the most devastating interplanetary superweapons–along with a host of other high-tech paraphernalia. 3 out of 5 stars Star Wars for Children?.......2007-09-10

This book is good. There are plenty of pictures, sourcing for items and where the surface in the universe, even a fairly decent description of most of them. But it didn't have the technical specifications that you would expect from a Star Wars Manual. It was lacking in a lot of fine details, and seemed ti have been made just to gloss over everything and make it look good. Ok, but not great.

3 out of 5 stars They Don't make them like they used too.......2007-08-29

Nice Diagrams, a few VERY good light saber comparison pages, nice description of companies that make the weaponry but mostly underwhelming with little information or obvious information on the actually weapons as well as very poor renders of the few that were rendered. I never got the original of this book but I did have the original Essential guide to vehicle's and vessels and it was MUCH better with no render only black and white artist sketches as well as more interesting diagrams.

              5 out of 5 stars A job well done........2007-06-15

I was extremely pleased with what I got when I purchased this guide. It gives a detailed description of the anatomy, history, and use of every item in Star Wars. This guide is broken into sections. These are ranged weapons, melee weapons, starship and planetary weapons, superweapons, defenses and armor, security, and other equitment. The ranged weapons section covers everything from the simple dart shooter to the lethal disruptor rifle. Melee is similar, and it gives many descriptions of Yuuzhan Vong melee weapons(ugh). Starship and planetary weapons section covers many things, and the superweapons section is a very interesting section. I value this guide over the Vehicles and Vessels guide. Its setup is more structured and organized. In the beginning of this guide you can find a Major Manufacterers guide. Ian Fullwood has done an excellent job illistrating this guide. You can see everything. I strongly reccomend this guide to anyone who likes Star Wars, and it really helped me get into Star Wars. A must-have.

              5 out of 5 stars Nice!.......2006-11-21

Tis book expands on the weapons/technology used in the Star Wars universe, not just what's seen in the movies but also what appears in the books. The artwork/pictures in the book have been updated, they have a more realistic look to them.
