Book Description
Project Management for Business and Engineering is a direct response to the ever-increasing need for better project management. This book encompasses the full range of project management - everything from origins, philosophy, and methodology to actual applications. Nicholas describes concepts and techniques such as project initiation and proposals, scope and task definition, scheduling, budgeting, risk analysis, control, project organization, and the often overlooked "people" side - project leadership, team building, conflict, and stress management.
The Systems Development Cycle is used as a framework to discuss project management in a variety of situations, making this book useful for managing virtually any kind of project, program, or task force. Over 230 figures and tables, 60 short examples and illustrative cases, and end-of-chapter summaries, review problems, questions, and case studies are included.
The author draws upon his experience with projects in information technology, systems analysis, aerospace engineering, human resource development, and over a decade of teaching project management as a university professor.
· Comprehensive, balanced topical coverage; interesting to read
· Numerous figures and tables (figure/table appears every 2.5 pages, average)
· Systems approach: methodologies, development cycle, and engineering
Customer Reviews:
THE text for project management courses at the MBA level.......2006-06-05
Nicholas's book was the adopted text for a graduate course for MBA students in the Spring term of 2006. Although the class was an elective, it attracted 38 students, more than any other elective. For elective classes, the students often examine the assigned textbook before deciding whether they should enroll.
At the end of each course, the students provide feedback on the assigned textbook and its value to the course. For the course that just ended, their reviews were positive throughout and downright enthusiastic in many cases. Many felt that Nicholas's textbook significantly enhanced their grasp and understanding of project management.
The MBA students particularly appreciated the book's clear layout and topic development: philosophy and concepts of project management, systems development cycle, and organization behavior. A great plus are the many case studies at the end of the chapters. Not only do these cases reinforce the message of the chapter with focused questions, but they also further the big-picture understanding of the project manager's role in contributing to an enterprise's bottom line.
This reviewer warmly recommends this text to any instructor preparing a course in project management as part of a formal degree program and hopes that a future edition will also present links to the ANSI standard 99-001-2004, known as the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, the PMBOK Guide.
Managing Business and Engineering Projects.......2006-01-15
The business operating environment in most industries worldwide is fiercely competitive with rapid changes and developments in technology, which have impacted on the conduct of projects. New challenges are constantly arising which require unique, innovative and creative solutions to meet the dynamic needs of consumers and customers for high quality goods and services. To meet these needs, organizations find it necessary to organize the workforce into productive project teams with combined expertise from several functional areas.
The book equips the reader with project management skills to raise significantly the probability of success with our projects. The book is about managing business and engineering projects which enables technical specialists such as architects, quantity surveyors, engineers, systems analysts and chemists to not only understand the technical aspects of projects but also the critical relevant business and management topics. People with business training background also benefit from understanding and appreciating the technical aspects of projects.
The book is suitable for practicing managers in business and engineering as well as people doing project management at an advanced level (such as at university level). The book focuses on practical application of project management concepts and the successful implementation of projects. The book covers both the broad aspects of project management as well as the practical aspects. Among the topics covered are PERT/CPM, scheduling, budgeting and control, systems and procedures for project planning as well as organizational and human side of projects.
Among the critical aspects in managing projects are good communication, trust, teamwork, effective conflict management and managing emotional stress.
I found this book very comprehensive in its treatment of project management and I recommend it to those wishing to study this interested subject at an advanced level.
For systems thinkers, a great book........2005-08-27
Project Management for Business and Engineering can serve as a secondary book for students undertaking Project Management courses.
Secondary I say, because the wealth of information and prespectives presented is not for the soft hearted.
Apart from the usual PM, tools and techniques presented in many other literature, the author revolves his presentation around systems thinking.
The concepts explained in this book are backed by case studies and examples that are somewhat fun to read.
For those looking for that little bit extra in PM, this is the book for you!

Customer Reviews:
Great resource for HRD/HPT practitioners and trainers.......2000-06-17
The book is a great resource for practitioners and trainers (especially those who are just starting) who are familiarizing themselves with the scope, processes, and issues involved in planning, developing and implementing a performance measurement system. It provides a comprehensive overview of performance measurement and related terms as well as illustrates succintly the relationship between theory behind measuring performance in business and industry, and practice related to performance improvement. The four steps that the authors outlined as their cookbook approach exudes simplicity of ideas that anybody involved in training and development, HRD, etc., can relate. The use of a case throughout the book provides a common thread that grounds you, the reader, to reflection and application mode as you attempt to make sense of how the analysis tools can be used in your own practice. Definitely a good buy and a great addition to a consultant's library. For those who are thinking of consulting or working in areas involving performance improvement, the book is definitely something you need to have -- great "how-to" content, usable tools, simple layout and easy to read.
Excellent Resource.......2000-05-09
As with any "Cookbook" the results of your efforts will be directly proportional to the quality of the ingredients you use. This book provides clear guidelines and examples on the right ingredients and how to measure them. It is easy to follow - providing clear, concise methodolgy for global performance metrics which are applicable in a variety of business settings.
A great resource! Total Performance Measurement "A to Z"!.......2000-04-26
As an 18 year Human Resource practitioner, both on the corporate and consulting side, I've had to sell "big ideas" in many companies to numerous business leaders. This book contains, under one cover, a complete, thorough and tested methodology to form the building blocks to not only sell the ideas, but also to measure the outcomes for even better future programs.
The tools provided in the CD are excellent and make the book a valuable resource that you'll find yourself refering to time and time again. I'd recommended this book to anyone serious about making an impact from a Human Resource perspective or any "soft science." A must read in today's competitive environment where companies don't have time to not get the most bang for the buck.
Finally a book with teeth! Not a "one minuteized" version.......2000-03-23
Tootson and Tesoro in Global Performance Measurement Systems and companion CD provide practical insights into the often misunderstood field of performance measurement. Many business people talk a lot about measuring the effect of training, consulting, and other expensive corporate initatives this book shows you in detail how to do it. I'd strongly recommend this book to anyone who has to sell "big ticket ideas" internally or externally and wants to differentiate themselves from the superficial. It's about time we had a business book that wasn't generic pablum.

Book Description
This book presents a complete overview of what we know -- and would like to know -- about the evolution and structure of massive stars. The spectra of early type stars are produced by elaborate model atmospheres enveloping the internal structure self-consistently.
The book is valuable for research on the evolution, structure and atmospheres of massive stars. Astrophysics courses at university level should use the book to get acquainted with the most recent observational data, modeling of the internal and atmospheric structure, and the refined development of single and binary evolution scenarios of massive stars.

Book Description
David Papineau presents a controversial view of human reason, portraying it as a normal part of the natural world, and drawing on the empirical sciences to illuminate its workings. In these six interconnected essays he offers a fresh approach to some long-standing problems. Papineau rejects the contemporary orthodoxy that genuine thought hinges on some species of non-natural normativity. He explores the evolutionary histories of theoretical and practical rationality, indicating ways in which capacities underlying human reasoning have been selected for their biological advantages. He then looks at the connection between decision and probability, explaining how good decisions need to be informed by causal as well as probabilistic facts. Finally he defends the radical view that a satisfactory understanding of decision-making is only possible within a specific interpretation of quantum mechanics. By placing the subject in its scientific context, Papineau shows how human rationality plays an explicable role in the functioning of the natural world.
Customer Reviews:
Some helpful insights in the foundation and usage of reason.......2004-01-25
In The Roots of Reason David Papineau (Department of Philosophy, King's College London) collected some articles of his, published previously in different journals; one article is significantly expanded.
These articles are about reason, its foundation and usage from different points of view, always from Papineau's naturalistic position.
The articles are
1 Normativity and Judgement
2 The Evolution of Knowledge
3 The Evolution of Means-End Reasoning
4 Probability as a Guide to Life (& Helen Beebee)
5 Causation as a Guide to Life
6 Uncertainty Decisions and the Many-Minds Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics
Some chapters presuppose knowledge of other essays from various sources. Each chapter has a good reference list, so the reader can track and find these prerequisite articles easily.
Although the content is difficult (decision theory, probability, quantum mechanics), the essays are clearly written. The reader can follow the arguments very well.
I put this book on a list for general studies. Isn't reason something everybody should be capable to use adequately. The reason I don't give the book all the five stars is the sometimes intellectually high effort for the reader. Whoever enjoys highly stimulating thoughts may read it with five stars.

Complete Wilderness Training Book.......2007-02-12
Great illustrations, instructions, etc... A must have for anyone learning survivalism, a great gift for boys and men, and of course Mom's who love to camp.
An overview of the subject-NOT a manual.......2006-07-26
You'll notice that other reviewers have described this book as a "good introduction" and I think that's probably an apt description. Yes, there are nice color photgraphs and drawings. The author's described background would indicate that he's qualified to comment at length on the subject. The editorial review states that the book is more international in scope, describing wilderness techniques in foreign lands. It's true that the book talks about survival on other continents, but I have to say that its treatment of those hostile (and likely even more unfamiliar to most of the book's readers)environments is more superficial than its treatment of general survival techniques. What this book does is give a very broad overview of the serious subject of survival. To be well learned and therefore genuinely useful, such techniques require in-depth, detailed study. This book, however, is sort of a coffee table book of survival. I am tempted to say that it is a survival book for people who might rather fantasize about wilderness ventures than actually go on them. I won't go so far as to say that it is a useless book; there is a fair bit of good information in it. But if I were to compile a list of survival books that I've read..which would number closer to 100 than 50...I would put this one near the bottom. It is most useful as a supplement to an established survival library. If you're looking for a good first book on survival I would recommend Wiseman's SAS Survival. I would also advise any novice contemplating a trip into remote areas to find a text dealing specifically with that environment, and to first get REAL experience with a seasoned group of outdoorsmen.
A Good Basic Wilderness Training Book.......2005-11-08
Gives the reader a good place to start. This book is loaded with illustrations and pictures giving a broad range of topics to the reader. I would suggest reading in more detail and study of Wilderness Survival/Training with other books before venturing out into the vast remote wilderness areas. I still find myself reviewing the book periodically. It is a keeper.
Save your money for a better book.......2004-10-09
Like hellcatty from Hong Kong, my version is also called a survival manual. While there is some information of use in the book, in most areas it is sadly lacking (although it has pretty pictures). For example, on page 63, it shows Mr. McManners doing a bow drill fire. I'd sure like to see him do it in person if this photo accurately portrays his technique. Unless he has arms like Lou Ferrigno, that top hand of his is going to be all over the place. Similarly, on the same page, his portrayal of hand drill fire making leaves a lot to be desired. He states that the hand drill fire technique 'only works effectively in hot climates, where the wood is really dry.'
It also works very effectively, at least in my area, in the winter, when it also can be quite dry. His drill also looks somewhat top heavy and unbalanced. Overall, as stated in my title, save your money for a much better book.
Good book for beginner.......2001-12-21
The version I bought has a different book title, which is name 'Hugh McManners Outdoor Survival Guide'. I found the book title is misleading, since the content of the book is not much about 'survival'. The recent book title is much better. This is not a manual,I recommend it to all wilderness training beginner.

Customer Reviews:
Great book. Full of valuable information........2007-07-30
This is a very well written book. I got it from the library and I had to buy it for my own personal library. By no means does it have all the information, but it has a great list of about 30+ books to also buy. None of which are written by this author. This is the first survival book I have ever read. It was so good that I started buying all the books it recommends, which are also full of great information. A lot of other reviewers poke fun at some of the information in this book but a lot of it is taken out of context. A must for any survivalist library and a great start off point for anybody interested in starting one.
This book ruined my day...I've thrown it out.......2001-10-25
It took this nut only until the 5th paragraph to get down to SERIOUS factual errors, as in "56% of the American public voted against Bill Clinton".
His advice is incredibly unworthy of our times: "Make sure you have extra amunition, as a good firefight uses it up fast", and "If you have snitches in your neighborhood, have a midnight discussion with him, and if that doesn't work, take care of him and remember not to leave any brass laying around that will allow the government to trace it back to you"
I breezed through the entire book and then discarded it. I wouldn't even want anyone to know it was in my posession.
Genius or madman?.......2001-10-14
You have to love this book.
I know I do.
My favorite parts are the fore-mentioned alien-attacks and the gang-wars that take over your city. The author suggests that the gangs will completely outnumber your police/army/navy/special-ops/national-guard completely and that you should find a safe place to hide while they over-run your city.
I'm sure.
He later suggests that you attempt to create an uprising by gathering munitions and what-not to do so, but BEFORE all that, try to gain money by selling food to the gangs that have infected the inside of your city limits...HUH?!?!
And just so you know...there is NO way to survive completely after a nuclear-strike! Not unless you have building beneath the Earth, perfecting a culture that can survive without the sun or fresh water and been building it all underground for years just in case something like this happens!
If any of THAT sounds insane, then you're game for this joke of a "survival-guide".

EXCELLENT !!!.......2001-09-16
Excellent book. Covers many scenarios. I purchased it in 99', but didn't really read much of it until this week. The section on External Terrorism applies to today. Amazingly, things are playing out as written here.

Customer Reviews:
Worth it 15 years ago.......2002-02-23
I purchased this book in hardback... over 15 years ago. At the time, I was very interested in outdoor survival. Of the 15 to 30 books I read on the subject, this one was the most clear and practical. It addressed many facets of the wilderness survival with out a lot of jargon. The author focuses mainly on low tech solutions to survival situations, but gives some suggestions of more technology-based solutions as well. An example would be including Chapstick in a survival kit for its morale value and low cost in weight. It covers the basics of survival in any environment and then branches out to specific details for each environment. It covers much practical information, but also includes detailed information about where to learn survival skills, other survival books and what is covered in them and addresses for suppliers of equipment.
the complete book of outdoor suvival.......2002-02-18
This is one of the best suvial books i have ever read. The book is very clear and easy to understand. It has everything you need for a basic camping trip to any adventure in the outdoors.
Its good!.......2001-08-27
I would suggest this book for anyone entering the woods, no matter your experience.... in other words, it was very good, got straight to the point, and no useless info found here!
Very bad one.......2001-06-18
If you really want to learn not wasting your money buy "The SAS survival handbook".
A Necessary Read to Any Outdoorsman.......2000-10-01
Excellent book that discusses everything from frostbite to dehydration. Learn how to find water, trap animals, prepare foods, navigate, make fire, and treat snake bites. This is an indispensible companian to anyone spending any amout of time in the backcountry.
Book Description
Over 40 million used cars are sold each year, yet the average person has very little idea what to pay for one, or ask as a selling price. First published in 1926 for banks, auto dealers, and other businesses, the Kelley Blue Book quickly set the standard for used vehicle pricing guides. In 1993, the book was finally made available to the general public. Published twice a year, the Consumer Edition of the Kelley Blue Book Used Car Guide includes current trade-in values, private party values, and suggested retail values on over 10,000 models of used cars, trucks, and vans. Covering 15 model years, the book includes VIN numbers, original list price, easy-to-use equipment schedules with values for optional equipment, and a table of acceptable mileage ranges by year. The comprehensive "How to Use this Book" section offers helpful advice on buying a used vehicle.
Customer Reviews:
Better Information Elsewhere.......2006-01-22
Kelley has become a generic name due to its longevity so buyers look there for vehicle pricing. With the advent of the Internet, vehicle information that is more relevant to the consumer is now available through Edmunds.com or Yahoo cars. Kelly historically focused on dealer-centric cost which was OK when they were the only company around. Today, consumer information can be best obtained elsewhere.
