Book Description
Based upon Crawford's extensive survey of more than 300 U.S. businesses, this book explores and describes in detail the various types of employee benefits policies designed to ease the burdens of employees caught between the conflicting demands of work and the need to provide care for dependent children and/or parents. Crawford examines in depth such policies as flextime, referral services, on-site daycare, and dependent care service partnerships, identifying the strengths and drawbacks of each and the extent of their current use in American businesses. She also offers the reader a rationale for companies' adoption of dependent care policies, showing that a failure to implement such measures can lead to problems such as increased absenteeism and decreased productivity that will eventually impact the corporate bottom line. Crawford demonstrates that the combined impact of more women in the workplace and a growing aged population has created a dependency crisis that is only beginning to be adequately addressed by American businesses and policymakers. The policies that are now being developed to address this problem are examined both from the standpoint of how they actually work in practice and how they can provide real benefits to employers as well as employees. Concerned throughout to provide both descriptive detail and practical advice, the author illustrates ways in which to lay the foundation for effective dependent care employee benefits packages. She also reviews and evaluates current legislative activities on behalf of parental leave. Concluding with a look at the future, Crawford assesses the demographics that will define what kinds of dependent care assistance the labor force of tomorrow will require. An indispensable guide for human resource professionals, Crawford's work will also be of significant interest to students in business and management programs.

Good Growing: Why Organic Farming Works (Our Sustainable Future)
ASIN: 0786417471 |
Book Description
This book looks deeply into the American food system and closely examines the need for change in the way food is grown and distributed in the United States. It is composed of twelve interviews with dynamic women who work on issues surrounding modern agriculture. These women are producers, academicians, advocates and activists. Some work in agricultural law and policy. All are devoted to changing the current system.
Within a framework that offers brief overviews of the development of U.S. agriculture, the interviews allow the reader to hear firsthand what has gone wrong and what we can do about it. Part One focuses on concepts of traditional agriculture, organic growing and market viability. Part Two discusses pioneering agriculture and the process of restoring our farms to thriving habitats of biodiversity with clean water and healthy soil. Part Three considers the issues of industrial agriculture, exploring the controversy of genetically modified foods, farm foreclosures, and the 2002 Farm Bill. Part Four returns us to sustainable agriculture and how we can make sustainability work for us. It includes discussions of farmers' markets, co-ops, and local food systems.

Transforming.......2005-10-04
This is a profound book that delves into the essence of what it means to be a human being. Everything is covered - from advice on efforts to face our own inner gremlins, letting them go, to advice on how to start relaxing and creating with one's consciousness.
"Creating is pure fascination" (p. 218)
This is also a book that talks about dissolving structures, entering the chaos consciously, and formulating a will to happiness so strong, so unyielding, so determined that the intent becomes creating power itself. And that is where we truly start living. A great book.
Best book ever.......2003-10-21
I bought this book 20 years ago and even now when I read it I come to new realizations about myself. The material present in the lectures goes so deep that you can read the lectures again and again and continue to get insight from them. It is the best guidebook for life and for understanding our shadow selves that I have ever seen. If you want a true change of self and freedom from your compulsions this is the best place to start. Mind you, it is a slow process but the book is just the thing to turn to when you feel stuck and hopeless. It has the keys that will lead you to just the understanding you need to free your mind.
A True Blessing.......2001-11-02
I find that this book and mainly the "Lectures" that I purchased additionally (listed in the back of the book) helped to transform my life to what is true freedom and our purpose for existence. The material is truly profound and rich with guidance and insight that will last for life and cannot be replaced. This is my favorite spiritual literature and is such a gift left by a very courageous and talented woman. The book and the Lectures are channeled material by a "Guide" who comes through Eva. The Lectures begin around the 1950s with material that will always be timely. If you discover this book with the Lectures you are blessed and if you can manage to stay with the Lectures this Pathwork is for you.
This is worth more than the bible ever could to me........2001-09-06
This book totally answered almost all of my questions about life. It CHANGED my life. I introduced it to my roommate, and we kept stealing it back and forth from each other. It is the single most important book I've ever read. It seriously changed my life- how I saw things, how I lived. It's background may make people a little skeptical, but I swear, if you read it, you will know... I don't care what the circumstances were for it's being written, it combed my soul and lifted me PERMANENTLY from the depression that was always lurking somewhere in my life.
Coming Home to Self.......2001-03-30
I have been studying the Pathwork lectures for the past two years in Grace Training facilitated by Gayle Straub. The suggested reading list contains all of Eva Pierrakos books. There are 34 of us studying the lectures and Pathwork of Self-Transformation is one of the main texts for understanding the shadow and lower self. There are very few books that delve as deeply into the inner workings of the unconscious. The masks we have acquired out of self protection are described in great detail. It is like reading the book of life and all we need to know and don't know how to ask. This book describes in a readable format very complex image distortions. These distortions and illusions appear very real to us. You can "see" yourself very clearly in each chapter. You will find yourself saying,"That's me. So that is why I do that." Uncovering and facing the self is very difficult without an unbiased third party as a sounding board. This book is the sounding board.
Book Description
For a soldier, knowing where you are is a matter of life and death, and so it comes as no surprise that the Army has produced the most complete, clear, and thorough guide to map reading and navigation available.
The book starts with a comprehensive explanation of the meaning and uses of maps, whether photographic, planimetric (standard-style) or topographic, then progresses to discuss the use of those maps, discussing compass techniques, celestial navigation, and determination of distance. There is a detailed section on interpreting topographic maps, with notes on tactical considerations for differing terrain, as well as determining the ease of movement through an area.
Chapters include:
Training Strategy - Maps -Marginal Information and Symbols - Grids - Scale and Distance -Direction - Overlays - Aerial Photographs - Navigation Equipment and Methods - Elevation and Relief - Terrain Association - Mounted Land Navigation - Navigation in Different Types of Terrain - Unit Sustainment
There is also information on field sketching, the tricky art of map folding, units of measure and conversion factors, map symbols, orienteering, and the global positioning system (GPS).
For the adult outdoorsman venturing into the wild, the Boy Scout, or the serious military buff, the Army's guide to map reading and navigation is an indispensable must.
Customer Reviews:
not to learn from.......2007-06-12
Found this book confusing. Maps are illegible which makes the text irrelevant. It covers way too much detail all at once instead of progressing through steps. Covers alot of info and data useful only for those in the military. May work in conjunction with a lecture course, but by itself I would be surprised if anyone learned only from this book. I am new to this so maybe it's just not for beginners.
Learn to Navigate.......2007-04-10
Study orienteering with the handbook used by the U.S. Army. This guide is perfect for any outdoorsman or for teaching Boy Scouts how to use a compass.
First choice for teaching purposes.......2007-03-07
I own several excellent books on compass use and "orienteering."
The Army version "Map Reading and Land Navigation" is the simplest and most straightforward explanation of how to get around with just a compass and a map. If I were teaching teenagers (Scouts, etc.) how to use these tools this would be my choice of text.
A 'must' for any who might need basic survival skills.......2005-08-08
Soldiers need to know how to read maps accurately, how to navigate, and how to understand all manner of maps, compasses, celestial navigation and more. So does the outdoorsman. For the military and the outdoors wilderness trekker, U.S. Army Map Reading And Land Navigation Handbook provides basic instruction on grids, scale and distance, reading overlays and using navigation equipment. A 'must' for any who might need basic survival skills.
Book Description
"The purpose of this field manual is to provide a standardized source document for Army-wide reference on 'map reading' and 'land navigation'. This manual applies to every soldier in the Army regardless of service branch, MOS, or rank. This manual also contains both doctrine and training guidance on these subjects. Part One addresses map reading and Part Two, land navigation. The appendixes include a list of exportable training materials, a matrix of land navigation tasks, an introduction to orienteering, and a discussion of several devices that can assist the soldier in land navigation." Customer Reviews:
Great References.......2007-08-13
I am in the mental health field and this book comes in handy when my clients inform on the meds or drugs that they are or have taken in the past.
Not what I thought.......2007-03-13
It was more patient information. Good photo's of a few drugs in the back, not what I expected and frankly not useful for clinical application. It can be quite useful if you want to do patient education. Looks good though.
This is a mental health/substance abuse therapist's dream come true........2007-03-01
This is a wonderful book and is a wealth of information for a person trying to understand the pros and cons of medication. It breaks down drugs by different indexes and charts. To list a few of its features and information given:
1) Mental & emotional side effects
2) Drug profiles
3) Street drug slang
4) A color coded chart for more than 200 drugs
5) Overdose outcomes
6) Psychotropic drugs by brand & general name
7) How each drug works on mental and physical conditions
8) Provides the pharmacological classes of drugs
Working in a substance abuse and mental health field, I find this a wonderful tool. This book is written in easy terms and is broken down into sections that are reader friendly. The information is candid and provides both the positives and negatives of medication. The one thing intimating about this book is the size, it is over 800 pages. The book is also pricey, but the information, if the person can utilize it, is well worth the cost.
It's not that bad..........2007-02-12
I thought when I received the book that it would be overly technical and make things harder for a course I'm taking, but it's pretty clear. It has a really good index in the back that covers all you would be looking for in a guide for mental health meds. So far it's been worth the money.
Useful tool.......2007-01-09
As a school social worker, I am called upon for consultation with teachers, doctors, etc. that are working with my kids. It's important for me to understand the benefits/side effects of the medications that they may be taking. I have found this book to be very helpful.

Customer Reviews:
needed more than this book had to offer.......2003-08-21
I found this book of limited use because anyone dealing with prescribed medications in the mental health field is also usually dealing with someone taking other medications- for pain, sleep, GI distress, etc. So having a book on only mental health medications has not been that helpful to me. It is worth getting a more comprehensive book.
Finally a reference guide that weighs less than 20 pounds!.......2003-03-16
Diagnosed with a number of psychological disorders at a very young age, I have been prescribed medication after medication. I soon found myself wanting to know what it was that I was taking. I trusted my doctors be feared they may have overlooked possible side effects or interactions. I have used the full sized PDR along with the Genarics tomb as well, books both very heavy and overly complex for someone uneducated in medicine. Now, PDR: Drug Guide for Mental Health Professionals has alowed me to quickly cross-refrence drug interactions and saves me the time of having to sift through medical jargan to find the information I want to know and can understand. A great buy!
