This book is a magisterial critical evaluation of Max Weber's thesis 'The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism'.
Tawney argues rightly that there is an interaction between religion and the social/economical environment because 'it seems a little artificial to talk as though capitalist enterprise could not appear till religious changes had produced a capitalist spirit. It would equally be true, and equally one-sided, to say that the religious changes were purely the result of economic movements.' (p.312)
As an example, the Christian Church itself had changed mightily in the Renaissance. It persecuted the Spiritual Franciscans who followed St Francis' rule of evangelical poverty. It was the richest company in the Western world (see W. Manchester: 'A world lit only by fire').
Tawney remarks rightly that what Calvin did for the bourgeoisie of the sixteenth century, Marx did for the proletariat of the nineteenth. Calvin's success was firmly prepared by Puritan moralists, who stressed thrift, work as an end in itself, efficiency and rational calculation. They paved the way for a shrewd commercial and powerful midldle class, which adopted the Calvinist religion and its ethic as a natural ally.
This very rich book shows the real impact of Calvinism on the whole society. One example: wages. Calvinism considered 'that high wages are not a blessing, but a misfortune, since they merely conduce to weekly debauches.' (p. 267)
This is a brilliantly written, colourful, metaphorical and yet scientific work. It should be an example for many historians, of how 'essential historical evolutions' can be presented to the public in a comprehensive and attractive language.
This is an essential read for the understanding of out modern society.

A classic.......2002-06-11

This book is not only a classic in polisci fields but also very important in sociology and history. Tawney's argument that the decline of the communal mindset (present in Reformed theology especially) was a leading cause of the rise of Capitalism, especially in countries like England, where a wealthy few profited from the disolution of the monasteries.

I would recomend this book to anyone studying polisci, history, sociology and even theology, to give a good perspective on why we think the way we do. Our western mindset is a classic example of not seeing the forest throught the trees.

Gives insight into how to evaluate Christian prosperity........1999-02-03

I've wanted to get a persepctive on how the early church justified its incredible secular wealth and power during the Middle Ages. I believe that it is time to revisit these ideas in an age where Christianity and secular society are either obsessed with the accumulation of wealth or Christians have an aversion to it feeling that Christians shouldn't have wealth. This book was recommended to me by my professor at Fuller Seminary.

This book is a classic in its field........1999-01-21

What is the boundary between us and them? Who is part of the family, with whom we deal on the basis of love and trust, and who is not, from whom we require a monetary accounting of our economic relationship? This book follows the changing answer to that question over the 16th and 17th centuries, in Britain and (to a lesser extent) other parts of Europe.

The medieval conception was that all people were brethren in Christ, all part of the family, and everyone was responsible for the well-being of all. The Church, as the guardian of this family, could establish and enforce ethical standards for business life as much as it regulated all other aspects of life. This was the view of the Protestant reformers as well as the Catholic Church.

No doubt sincerely felt in the brotherhood of the early church, this feeling began to pall with the have-nots in a stratified medieval society, especially as the corruption of the Church became rampant. The tide of individualism was rising, not to be denied. The Protestant reformers certainly did not intend to help this tide along: they regarded it as part of the decadence of the time. The story, and the irony, of religion in the rise of capitalism is that the Protestant churches got captured by the individualists against the wishes of their founders.

Tawney explores this history with wit and wisdom, as illustrated in this quote: "... the poor, it is well known, are of two kinds, 'the industrious poor', who work for their betters, and 'the idle poor', who work for themselves."

This book is a classic in its field, and should be in the library of everyone interested in the history of the last few centuries.

Cartmell knows a lot about martial arts,,,,,but he does seem to know much about photography. He has both tori and uke wearing grey t-shirts and black pants. Furthermore nobody taught the photographer to open up the lens aperature to let a little light into the camera. All the photos are too dark. So the result is in most of the pictures, there is a mass of black where four legs ought to be, and some arms and hands, but you can't really tell which arms belong to whom.
The book needs to reprinted on good paper, hire a photographer and make the book something to showcase Mr. Cartmells' vast knowledge. As it is, it's a good read, but the last 2/3 of the book are really pretty useless.

Principals.......2007-05-12

This book gives you a clear set of principals that you can really use. The later half of the book gives you illustrations of those principals. It's that simple.

If you want to improve your martial art; get this. Throws/ takedowns are in pretty much most martial arts and so, things like leverage, dead-angles etc need to be ingrained. And here's the key; A principal led guide will get you using throws and takedowns faster and easier as you're not -mid fight/spar- spending your time wondering whether to use an osotogari, an outer-reap or a repulsive monkey!

A martial arts classic.......2005-07-25

The first 50 pages of this book, which I think many readers may skip over, are absolute gold. Most Westerners, myself included for a long time, don't get, buy into, or even care about 'qi', that internal force that predominates in certain martial arts. Tim Cartmell writes wonderfully about the mechanical principles of combat throws and body usage in order to obtain smooth, fluid power, all the while using your opponents force to your benefit. In the end, you will have 'qi', even though the author never once told you that's what he was doing. Pretty slick and effective if you ask me...which you didn't...so there you are.

This excellent manual is a perfect companion to the video "Effortless Combat Throws" by the same Author/Master demonstator. Both teach very easy, comprehensive approaches to quickly learning very serious throwing prinicples, strategies, and applications, including:

Body Usage

As demonstrated by Mr. Cartmell, "None of the techniques included... require any brute strength or the slightest amount of tension. Truly the effectiveness of many of the throws will be greatly reduced or completely lost by the inappropriate use (or overuse) of (your own) force."

I learned so much so fast from the book and video... and I am a Practioner/Student/Part Time Instructor of SPECIAL FORCES oriented Martial Arts/Hand To Hand COMBAT. Easily translates to the Home, Street, or wherever you could be attacked. Feel safe always, KNOW you'll be safe. Buy it gladly and you'll quickly learn techniques which will EASILY help you overcome, outmaneuver, outsmart or escape potential or certain life threatening situations *within seconds* when properly applied. THIS Book and Video Teaches You EXACTLY HOW. They won't know what hit them.

Robert Sabuda is to pop-up art what the International Grandmaster is to chess, and it isn't for nothing that he's described on the back of this book as a "paper engineer." As the title suggests, this whimsical, old-fashioned, elegant book embodies the Traditional Song of Abundant Giving--each verse of "The 12 Days of Christmas" is illustrated with a different pop-up creation. Some are relatively simple, such as the partridge (made of just two pieces of hinged paper) that opens its wings above some pears. Still, there is something unexpectedly bold about how the bird literally flies out over the top margin of the page. Other pop-ups are more characteristically bravura creations: the "Ten pipers piping" are crafted explicitly as decorative paper cut-outs, but the scissors that cut them are part of the pop-up, too. Perhaps the most complex of the set is "Eleven Ladies Dancing." Interpreted as an old-fashioned music box, the 11 ladies dancing are little ballerinas, and the music box is complete with drawer, back-mirror, and winding key. Sabuda's masterful The 12 Days of Christmas is full of nostalgia for the magic of childhood celebration--kids and adults alike would be happy to receive this book as a holiday gift. I already had this book myself, but I purchased multiple copies to give as Christmas gifts this year. I think they were very well received. I have all of Sabuda's pop up books and this one fits in nicely. If you like Sabuda's books, you'll love this one. If you don't have any of his books yet, this is a nice one to start with.

If you are "into" pop-up books this is another to add to your collection. If want to sit and look and read with kids another great book. I would not give the book to the kids, as with all pop-up books this one is fragile

This is a simply gorgeous pop-up rendition of the familiar work. It is an instant classic in my house. My children (and I) are mesmerized by every single page.

Rekindle a sense of wonder.......2002-12-16

I don't much like Christmas any more. It mostly makes me crabby and wrinkled, like an old person, just at a time when I would most want to feel ebullient and charitible. Happily, there are moments each year when I feel young again and possessed of a wide-eyed sense of wonder. Reading Robert Sabudas pop-ups is one of them. This year, we are blessed with a new addition to Mr. Sabuda's Christmas series, The Night Before Christmas. I make this suggestion to all ye of Christmas weariness. First, buy The Night Before Christmas. Second, wait until you are alone to read it (you can share with children later--that's fun, too). Third, open the book to the the "reindeer" page, hold on to your socks, and prepare to be utterly charmed. It'll make a believer of you. Don't be surprised if you find yourself leaving milk and cookies out for the big guy this year! And, perhaps, believing in Angels bearing glad tidings.

OK, I'm a convert........2006-11-14

I found the 7th edition of Schwartz a chore to read. However, while the recent edition of Sabiston has abridged and cut detail in favor of glossy color pictures, the 8th edition of Schwartz is a well balanced textbook, with an appropriate level of detail and an excellent basis in basic science. The chapters are also immensely readable! This is the text that I intend to finish reading during my surgical residency...

I am a fourth year medical student going into general surgery and this is the only surgical textbook that I have read in significantly. I chose this book because it got the best rating in First Aid for the Wards. I have completed all but the last 100 pages of this 1870 page text. It begins with a 500 page, 14 chapter section entitled "Part I, Basic Considerations" that is mostly surgical basic sciences. This material is mostly well-covered. The clinical application is not always clear but that is not the intention of these chapters as far as I can tell. Chapters on SIRS, infection, wound healing, and cell/molecular considerations stood out. In "Part II, Specific Considerations" there are chapters arranged by organ systems that cover the various areas of general surgery, followed by individual chapters on surgical subspecialties such as urology and ortho. These chapters vary somewhat in style. The congenital heart disease chapter was brief and a bit hard to follow partially due to insufficient discussion of embryology and fetal circulation. The acquired heart disease chapter was too brief in my opinion. The esophagus and vascular system chapters very lengthy and thorough. The other chapters are adequate. The gyn chapter and neurosurg chapters in the subspecialty areas are actually pretty good and have some useful info for general surgeons. The chapters generally speaking are less oriented towards descriptions of the surgery performed. They tend to have a brief discussion of normal anatomy and physiology, followed by in depth discussion of diagnosis including various tests and imaging studies, followed by descriptions of benign diseases and their medical and surgical management, followed by malignant diseases of that organ and their management. The chapter on colon and rectum is an exception since it discusses the various resections separately from the disease entities. The gyn section is heavy on descriptions of surgeries.

Since I cannot compare this text to others in the field, I am not sure how to rate it. The chapters have some variation in style. The discussion of diagnosis and management including diagnostic testing and imaging is very thorough. The descriptions of the actual surgeries is usually somewhat brief and not always complete. The illustrations of normal anatomy and of surgeries could be better. However, that may be more of a job for a surgical atlas, which is next on my list of things to read. The heart chapters (congenital and acquired) could be extended and improved. Otherwise, this is a pretty decent textbook that is mostly fairly readable.
