Book Description
This book develops econometric techniques for the estimation of production, cost and profit frontiers, and for the estimation of the technical and economic efficiency with which producers approach these frontiers. Since these frontiers envelop rather than intersect the data, and since the authors continue to maintain the traditional econometric belief in the presence of external forces contributing to random statistical noise, the work is titled Stochastic Frontier Analysis. Customer Reviews:
Excellent overview, not self-contained.......2007-01-13
There are a number of good books on productivity analysis, an extremely practical topic in academia and industry. This book focuses on stochastic frontiers, a method that requires a number of assumptions. For instance, if you are an engineer, you can profit from modeling using different distribution assumptions about the nature of your productivity differentials. If you are an economist, you are less enthusiastic about the rigidity of a frontier analysis.
One excellent feature of this book is that the theory is well labelled, so that in two minutes, you can find the topic you want. The problem is that the depth of the theory is not sufficiently covered in the book --you need access to journal articles. The book is not a user guide or textbook: it is a theory book with good breadth. Good for the shelf, if accompanied by statistics and econometrics textbooks.
Outstanding! .......2007-01-12
This book pulls together nearly every aspect of stochastic frontier models that you could ever need or want to learn about and puts it all together for the reader. The layout is remarkably well thought out and the methodology and estimators are clearly and rigorously teased out from a variety of sources, handily compiled into this one remarkable book.
You get it all in here, theory, methods, application, pitfalls, limitations, specification testing, both time series and cross sectional, you name it and this book has it. You will be able to find your way whether you've never used stochastic frontiers before or have done even advanced models of these production functions. There is something here for anyone and everyone interested in stochastic frontiers and you will NOT be disappointed by this book. It is simply outstanding and is a STEAL at the price it is offered at. Get it now!

Description:
This paper studies the cost structure of gas distribution utilities in Switzerland. Three stochastic frontier models are applied to a panel of 26 companies operating from 1996 to 2000. Efficiency is assumed to be constant over time. The analysis highlights the importance of output characteristics such as customer density and network size. The results suggest that the utilities could slightly reduce their operating costs by improving efficiency. There is no evidence of significant unexploited scale economies. However, our analysis indicates that the estimates of scale economies could be sensitive to the assumptions regarding the variation of output with output characteristics.

Description:
Employing the stochastic frontier approach, this paper investigates cost X-efficiency in China's banking sector over the period 1985-2002. The objective is to assess whether different ownership types and banking reforms affect X-efficiency. A two-stage regression model is estimated to identify the significant variables influencing X-efficiency. Overall, the results show that banks are operating 40-60% below the X-efficiency frontier. On average, the joint-stock banks are found to be more X-efficient than the state-owned commercial banks, but individual scores present a far more complex picture. It appears that X-efficiency was higher during the first phase of bank reform. Recent policies aimed at increased privatisation, greater foreign bank participation, and liberalised interest rates should help to improve the cost X-efficiency of China's banks.

Description:
This paper determines management behaviour for European savings banks between 1990 and 1998. Following the Granger causality approach of Berger and DeYoung [Journal of Banking and Finance 21 (1997) 849], we examine the intertemporal relationships between loan loss provision, efficiency and capitalisation for European banks. In so doing, we provide a robustness test of the Berger and DeYoung results for US banks. The possible relationships between the variables imply different modes of management behaviour namely bad management, bad luck, skimping, and moral hazard behaviour. The econometric results suggest that the most pressing management problem for European banks is bad management. Generally speaking, the European findings are inconsistent with previous results from the US. One notable difference in management behaviour between European and US banks is that the former do not appear to engage in skimping behaviour. The European results are sensitive to the number of lags included in the model.

Description:
Several approaches exist for the estimation of technical efficiency. In this paper the four most relevant ones (data envelopment analysis, stochastic production frontiers, panel data and distance functions) have been compared. The different approaches have been applied to the to the Spanish Trawl fishery that operated in Moroccan waters. The study highlights some of the problems arising from the wrong management of the fishery. It can also be concluded that in most cases, the multi- vs single-output feature is determinant in producing higher differences in the efficiency estimates, though the effect of either ignoring or taking into account random error also influences the results.

Description:
This study estimates the technical efficiencies and total factor productivity (TFP) growths in food, textile, chemical and metal products industries from 1993 to 2000 in Indonesia by using the stochastic frontier model. Furthermore, the determinants of inefficiency are also analyzed and TFP growth is decomposed into technological progress, a scale component, and efficiency growth. The results reveal that the food, textile, chemical and metal products sectors are on average 50.79%, 47.89%, 68.65% and 68.91% technically efficient, respectively. It is noted that ownership contributed to technical inefficiencies in the food sector; location and size contributed to technical inefficiencies in the textile sector, whereas size, ownership and age contributed to inefficiencies in the chemical and metal products sectors. We note that productivity in food, textile, and metal products sectors decreased at the rate of 2.73%, 0.26%, and 1.65%, respectively, but increased at a rate of 0.5% in the chemical sector. The decomposition of TFP growth indicates that the growths are driven positively by technical efficiency changes and negatively by technological progress in all four sectors.

Description:
This paper examines the impact of changes in bank governance on bank performance for a sample of commercial banks operating in SE Asia between 1990 and 2003. We identify bank governance in terms of bank ownership and measure bank performance as rank order alternative profit efficiency, technical change, and productivity. The period was characterised by financial deregulation, the Asian crisis and bank restructuring programmes. To resolve financial distress, SE Asian authorities implemented inter alia bank privatisation programmes and widened access for foreign ownership. Our results tend to support bank privatisation and the repeal of state ownership on economic grounds. We suggest the potential benefits of foreign ownership may take longer to be realised. For domestic private-owned banks, the challenge is improving bank efficiency.

Book Description
The groundbreaking canopy-access and rain forest research at Lambir Hills National Park in Sarawak, Malaysia, has contributed an immense body of knowledge. Its major studies over more than a decade are synthesized here for the first time. The focus of this unique volume is on plant-animal interactions and some of the foundations that create and maintain tropical diversity, especially pollination and the phenomenon of the General Flowering. The work discussed has implications for tropical biology, ecology, and pollination studies. The power of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation events and drought, particularly in their effects on mutualisms, are discussed in detail.

Customer Reviews:
Greg.......2002-02-27
As a curriculum director of summer sports camps for Basketball I highly recommend this book to all coaches. It challenges players to learn proper techniques, but more importantly it challenges players to think about their decision making, and to understand concepts of vision and space. (Difficult for many, so lets help make it easier). The book is ideal for working with youth players, the philosophy behind the book and the drills are fantastic.
Physical Education Teacher...what is H.A.'s profession.......2002-02-13
Just out of curiosity, I would like to know the back ground on the person who reviewed this book named H.A. It is obvious that he or she did not have a background in education or youth developement. Having worked with over thousands of students I can safely say that H.A. doesn't have a clue on what kids can really understand. If it is over your head then you have no business trying to teach it to the kids. Feel free to reply or email..
Owner/director of youth camps...great tool for any age........2002-02-11
As a director of youth basketball camps I found Dr. Garland's book priceless. There are few books written on space and movement like this one. You can never have enough drills to reinforce movement on and off the ball. The illustrations could help even the begginner level coach have a taste at success.
There are a great deal of inexperienced coaches and parents that could bennifit from this book. I use it and it works.
An Extremely Valuable Basketball Coaching Book!.......2002-02-07
Basketball books I have read by the dozen. None like this one though. Jim Garland's approach to teaching the game is totally unique. How many times have you seen kids at basketball practices standing in lines waiting for their turn? How many times have you seen teams with one or two players who move around on offense while the others stand watching? These drills involve kids constantly in the skills and concepts of the game without ever waiting in lines. Garland's drills teach coaches how to get those players to move intelligently on the court, help teammates get the ball in good places, see open players, and how to play defense within a team concept. What's amazing is that the drills are so well thought out, they do the teaching for you. Most drills are a game within themselves but as players strive to "win" the drill, they are improving in their understanding of the very concept you were trying to get across. The descriptions are remarkably simple. The progressions are masterful. And the diagrams are extraordinarily user friendly. Garland's Baffled Parent's Guide to Great Basketball Drills is a must for any youth coach! 5 stars!
Baffled by Your Book.......2001-11-27
I bought The Baffleds Parent's Guide To Coaching Youth Basketball and thought that the drill book might be interesting as well. Boy was I dissapointed. The drill book is nothing more than an attempt to extract more money from consumers like me. Readers beware--the coaching book is excellent ---the drill book is terrible.
Book Description
In this fresh and plainspoken book, admissions professional Bill Mayher demystifies the college application process, guiding students and parents through this too often anxiety-filled ritual. He covers practical issues, including discovering colleges, narrowing down the search, finding financial aid, and using college counselors to the best advantage. And he deals with the emotional issues, since this is a time of transition and growth for the whole family. Finally, he makes it clear that the best college choice is not simply the school that is the most difficult to get into.
Customer Reviews:
For those looking for balance from an elite private school expertise.......2006-07-29
This is a book designed to offer positive realism to the college process. Mayher writes with eloquence and the experience of working as a college counselor at some elite private schools. This book, similar to Jay Matthews' Harvard Schmarvard, intends to add perspective for those beginning the college process who need to begin looking beyond the Ivy League while managing family expectations. It reflects the author's experience; he works with private school paying families who frequently need some cold water tossed on the high expectations that come with high tuition payments. As an educator, this offered perspective but didn't meet my specific needs, getting new perspectives on off the beaten path schools or finding a work that appeals to a very wide audience.
This book is helpful, but I'd recommend checking out a chapter or two in the local bookstore before committing to purchasing it. Perhaps it's better to read this as a family book while driving on the way to your first college vists.

Amazon offers this with Pope's 40 Colleges -- Perfect Pair.......2006-03-01
If you are enthralled with college admissions, there are only two books that you need to read to understand the insanity of one of the most important decisions of your child's life (who thinks the decision is not necessarily his or her own). They are this book and Looking Beyond the Ivy League: Finding the College That's Right for You.
Read those two books and ignore the rest. If you need a list of colleges, go to Pope's alter ego book Colleges That Change Lives : 40 Schools You Should Know About Even If You're Not a Straight-A Student.
If you need more lists, go to Fiske or Barron's or US News or Cool Colleges or Yale's Insiders Guide. Any one of these will suffice.
But, Pope and Mayher are the kings of insight. They deliver what you need to hear, not the same old cliched items.
And, if you ever get a chance, see Mayher when he comes to a school. He is a stand up comic whose oration before the parents is better than his book.
Buy this book! You will not regret one penny spent.
Very original book on the subject.......2005-12-01
This is a very original book. It does not give specific college recommendations. The author makes the case that there are tens of colleges that offer exactly what you need in terms of academic and life experience. The colleges are as individual as the college bound students themselves. Therefore, the author feels it is futile for him to come up with generic college lists. He wants instead all the students and their families to conduct their own research to come up with their own selection of attractive colleges.
The author does a very good job of teaching us how to conduct such research. Beyond the obvious tips (websites, school counselors, college guides, college visits) he mentions several other ways to research colleges. One is to scrutinize in detail the course catalogues of colleges. These are available online. This may be one of the quickest and most insightful ways of contrasting differences between colleges. This seems evident. However, after reading nearly 15 college guides this is the first time I read about it.
Bill Mayher also includes interesting material regarding the limit of the SAT in estimating either intelligence or future college success. He mentions that an increasing number of colleges, including several selective Northeastern liberal colleges, are doing away with testing requirements. He shares interesting findings on the theory of multiple intelligences and emotional intelligence referring to the work of Howard Gardner and Daniel Coleman. According to Gardner and Coleman, there are many other dimensions to intelligence that ultimately determine success in life that are not captured by the SAT.
Mayher has an insightful understanding of Early Decision and Wait List. He is very pragmatic in his recommendation on when and how to use Early Decision and how to deal with Wait List.
Mayher also makes original suggestions such as taking a year off between high school and college. This is to allow oneself to mature and render the upcoming college experience more meaningful instead of a potential grinding continuation of high school. He also suggests that if you want the prestige of a BA from a top college such as Harvard, there is a really easy way. Do it through Harvard's evening extension program. You will avoid any foreboding testing and GPA requirements. Yet, you will have identical classes with the same textbook, teachers, etc... He argues that you will earn a degree that is indistinguishable from the one you would earn by attending the regular day classes. Even if the above tips are not for everyone, they are worthwhile to consider.
Let me recommend other excellent books on the subject. Hernandez "A is for Admission" and "Acing the College Application" are both excellent. "The Early Admission Game" by Avery and Fairbanks is a must for any one aiming at the most selective schools. Also, many of the Greenes' Guides written by the Greene brothers are very good. These include "Inside the Top Colleges", "Making it into a Top College," "The Public Ivies", "The Hidden Ivies."
Best Book on the Subject.......2005-10-05
I've been reading almost everything I can get my hands on regarding college admissions, and I must say that BY FAR this is the best book on the subject. Mayher's experience in the field, mature and common-sense perspective on the admissions process, clear and accessible writing style, and healthy sense of humor combine to make this book a pleasure to read. Admidst all of the pressure, hysteria, and hullabaloo surrounding the college admissions process, it is extremely refreshing to read something that offers great reassurance and hope to parents and kids alike. Before reading his book I had a lurking feeling that something was very amiss about modern college admissions, but feared that I was being too judgemental, and perhaps wrongly influencing my daughter by telling her (and myself) to relax. Now I realize that my hunches were right, and I feel much better informed about how to approach the college search process. Mayher's contribution is enormous, and I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND his book to any parent and adolescent facing the challenge of finding the "right" college.
Absolutely the Best!.......2003-07-30
As an educator, former college counselor, and parent, I urge those gearing up for the college process to put this book at the top of the pile. In short, the author understands what parents and their children truly need to know in order to get through this often mind-numbing process. Well-written, smart, and spiced with enough anecdotes to make it a truly enjoyable read, this book succeeds where others fall short. Do your family a favor and read this book---you'll be glad you did.

Customer Reviews:
Helpful.......2007-09-16
Helpful book for the study of pathology. Clinical vignettes and pictures make it a great addition to the pocket Robbins.
Great book for reviewing path.......2007-08-22
This book should be required in schools for pathology. The questions are excellent, explanation clear and well written, and the book was immensely helpful for all the blocks (we had system-based curriculum). Yes the questions are long but that makes it good practice for step1. This is also one of the few books that helped me in both step1 and school exam studying. Highly recommended.
for course work.......2007-05-24
This are very good questions especially for course work. BUt kaplan q bank is a better alternative for the step 1. You can use this for your course work and use qbank for the step 1. Better yet if u have the time use both for step 1. If you are strapped for time stick with kapln q bank. I had time and i used both and i made 229/95 in step 1.
Review of Pathology.......2007-05-12
This book provides a GREAT way to review what you read in the text. Sometimes it's hard to pinpoint what you really have to know from Robbins' text, but the questions in this book really helps you focus your reading, esp. since the questions in the book are similar to the questions on USMLE 1. Have fun!
Great questions book........2007-03-17
The book is filled with questions pertaining to each chapter in the big robbin's book. A great way to go thru pathology during year 1-2 is by reading the chapter in Robbins and then doing the set of questions in this book for that chapter. They also give a fairly good explanation with the answer for each question. I would definitely say a must have for getting ready for boards. Very glad I picked up this book.
