Book Description
This is the most comprehensive and significant statement about the value and potential of economic geography in thirty years. More than forty leading economists and geographers from around the world investigate the rival theories and perspectives that have sustained the recent development of economic geography, and offer stimulating insights into the emerging global economy of the twenty-first century. The editors have outstanding reputations for original research at the boundaries of economics and geography. They have taught in leading U. S. and European universities, and have contributed to significant debates about the theory of economic geography and its applications to public policy. The handbook is devoted to the frontiers of the field, eschewing nostalgia for the past in favour of contributions relevant to the emerging global economy of the twenty-first century. From general statements about the history and evolution of the field to statements about the crucial problems of economic geography, it is concerned with the rival theories and perspectives that have sustained the recent growth of economic geography. Always provocative and challenging, it will continue to define the terms of debate for the coming decade.

Book Description
The Coaching Effectiveness Profile provides a detailed process for assessing an individual's capacity to coach others. This is done by measuring coaching ability in seven separate categories.
When individuals or organizations face significant situations or challenges, one of the first priorities is to understand the issues involved and to work out what needs to be done. In many cases, we do not need any formal assistance to help this process and can think our way through the steps that seem to be most appropriate. However, on occasion the issues or the problems may not be entirely clear and a structured approach can help considerably.
To meet this need, HRD Press has a suite of simple and easy-to-use but comprehensive diagnostic assessment profiles to help people understand their skills or the situations they face more effectively. HRD Press' diagnostic assessments fall into three categories:
Assessments that measure the individual are concerned with competency. These profiles provide participants with an inventory of their relative skills in subcategories within each topic.
Assessments that measure the team's or organization's performance as a whole (usually relative to the individual's perception of his or her own performance or level of competence).
Assessments that measure a particular task or situation in which the style that is adopted or utilized by the individual or by others is important to understand.
All of these assessments are described in detail on the subsequent pages. In most cases, assessments have comprehensive facilitator guides to explain the underlying structure of the profile and to help facilitators to provide structured feedback. Person and organization assessments also have detailed coaching guides which provide practical "how to" tips on each question in the relevant profile.

Book Description
Principles of Insect Pathology, a text written from a pathological viewpoint, is intended for graduate-level students and researchers with a limited background in microbiology and in insect diseases. The book explains the importance of insect diseases and illuminates the complexity and diversity of insect-microbe relationships. Separate sections are devoted to
- the major insect pathogens, their characteristics, and their life cycles
- the homology that exists among invertebrate, vertebrate, and plant pathogens
- the humoral and cellular defense systems of the host insect as well as the evasive and suppressive activities of insect disease agents
- the structure and function of passive barriers
- the heterogeneity in host susceptibility to insect diseases and associated toxins
- the mechanisms regulating the spread and persistence of diseases in insects.
Principles of Insect Pathology combines the disciplines of microbiology (virology, bacteriology, mycology, protozoology), pathology, and immunology within the context of the insect host, providing a format which is understandable to entomologists, microbiologists, and comparative pathologists.

Book Description
An unusually attractive handbook that introduces would-be gold prospecting hobbyists to a bit of gold fever history, basic information on types of deposits, and guidelines on looking for gold in stream bed's and in quartz veins. The author writes informally and engagingly on various techniques of prospecting...a sound buy.--The American Library Association Booklist
Customer Reviews:
Prospecting Gold 101.......2006-11-06
A real good entry level book with lots of good information on equipment, what to look for and how to start. A must read for all beginners!
Does what it says.......2006-08-24
I've been gold panning before a couple of times with my brother and, while I have found a little gold (and I do mean "little") thanks to his knowledge, I think our next outing will be more fruitful thanks to this book. The history of finding gold in California is also helpful since, as the author says, 75-85% of the gold remains undiscovered. I found the book helpful enough I'm planning on buying a copy for my brother.
Fun and informative!.......2004-01-05
Don't be fooled by the reviewer who (inadvertently?) gave this book zero stars. It is packed with great entry-level information on gold prospecting. Bravo Mr. Petralia!
Good beginning Gold Panning Book.......2003-07-30
The real gem of this book for the amatuer Gold Panner/Sluicer is how to "read" a river to pick the best place to start working instead of wasting fruitless months like I did panning in the wrong places and finding lots of black sand, but no "color."
Other than that, the book is mainly a historical narrative of the Gold Rush in California with a brief introduction on one of the techniques for using a gold pan.

BE OBJECTIVE IN YOUR SEARCH.......2003-02-02
oNE OF THE BETTER BOOKS WRITTEN IN A REALISTIC and objective manner. Too many times, the prospector or miner gets $ signs in their eyes and greed sets in. They find a chip of gold and begin to think the whole country is there waiting for them to scoop the hidden gold up by the shovelful. Vern Ballantyne gives the reader vital information of how to explore, sample, and prospect in a manner that shows truth to the record, rather than GROSS OPTIMISM, and unwarranted hope.
If this is not enough, just ponder the fact that even with rich mines of the Old West, FAR MORE MONEY was put into the ground than was ever taken out.
I have purchased nearly 50 copies of this book and given them away to my associates who wanted to get into mining; that's how much I believe in the good common sense presented here by this author.

The many practice exercises start readers using this language in everyday situations.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Reference and Activity Book.......2006-11-10
I've always used Schaum's Outline Series, from Math to computer, and now the Russian language. It's hard to find a comprehensive reference book that will explain Russian language grammar precisely, let alone in an easy and comprehensible way. It's also provides exercises. A highly helpful and desireable book.
A good reference........2006-03-14
Schaum's Outline of Russian Grammar is good reference for a 1st year Course in Russian. The subject is explained clearly and the contents are well indexed. Given the extensiveness of the subject further studyt would require more specialized texts.
A terrific, fun supplement.......2006-03-10
I recently bought this book along with the New Penguin Russian Course, and the two complement each other very well. The way the Schaum's Outline of Russian Grammar is set up, you could use it with just about any type of Russian lessons, but I think it would be particularly helpful with conversation heavy systems like Pimsleur or Immersion method. The concepts are presented matter of fact and the exercises are very useful to use as self-drill. The overall layout, from a "this is how we'll break down the grammar rules" perspective is also very easy to understand, without skimping on the complexity of certain issues like verb aspect, or uses of the conditional mood, or irregular case endings. It even has stress marks (inexplicably omitted from Schaum's Vocabulary Outline) which are certainly the most important thing after learning the alphabet in terms of learning Russian pronunciation and intonation. Also, there are many explanation of shades of meaning implied by slight changes in grammatical usage. This book has been so helpful and useful that I just can't imagine a serious Russian student, particulary a do-it-yourselfer, not having it on hand.
Good practice.......2005-09-12
I started using Schaum's Outline of Russian Grammar after I already knew the basics of Russian grammar and found it very useful. One of the difficulties with Russian grammar is remembering all the rules and applying them correctly. This book is ideal for practice as it contains hundreds of grammar exercises with answers. The author, James S. Levine, begins each section of the book with a clear explanation of the grammar point to be studied. The exercises then test the learner's understanding of this point. The key to using the book successfully is to do all the exercises. This requires a certain amount of discipline, as it has to be said, this is a fairly dull book. There are no stories and no pictures, just grammar and more grammar. It is for this reason that I would not recommend this book for someone who has no knowledge of Russian at all. Moreover, although all aspects of Russian grammar are covered thoroughly including the basics, Levine often assumes the reader already has a reasonable Russian vocabulary and has a fair grasp of Russian sentence structure. A complete beginner would find doing some of the exercises almost impossible.
The key to speaking Russian correctly and fluently is for the grammar rules to become automatic. If you constantly have to work out the case of the noun, the aspect of the verb and so on, you'll never get anywhere. With practice even the complexities of Russian grammar become a matter of routine. Any reasonably serious student of Russian will benefit from Levine's book and will also gain a good degree of satisfaction from completing the exercises. This book will definitely improve your Russian.
RUSSIAN GRAMMAR MADE EASY.......2005-07-29
This is one of the best grammar books I have used!
Having studied Latin, French, Spanish, Hebrew, German, Russian and English, there is no doubt in my mind that Russian grammar is up there in the first or second place in difficulty. This book does an excellent job of presenting complex material in a clear and straightforward manner. Dr. Levine organized the material so you can use the book as a study aid and as a reference book. He introduces each topic with definitions and general rules, and follows with numerous examples with corresponding English translations. He summarizes the topic with appropriate tables and a thorough review, using extensive exercises, with answers in the back of the book.
Worth mentioning is the particular sensitivity of Dr. Levine to the English-speaking student. Subtle points which are common pitfalls for English speakers learning Russian are brought up and examples given.
Book Description
In 1935 the renowned photographer Berenice Abbott set out on a five-year, WPA-funded project to document New York's transformation from a nineteenth-century city into a modern metropolis of towering skyscrapers. The result was the landmark publication Changing New York, a milestone in the history of photography that stands as an indispensable record of the Depression-era city.
More than sixty years later, New York is an even denser city of steel-and-glass and restless energy. Guided by Abbott's voice and vision, New York photographer Douglas Levere has revisited the sites of 100 of Abbott's photographs, meticulously duplicating her compositions with exacting detail; each shot is taken at the same time of day, at the same time of year, and with the same type of camera. New York Changing pairs Levere's and Abbott's images, resulting in a remarkable commentary on the evolution of a metropolis known for constantly reinventing itself.
Customer Reviews:
New York Changing.......2007-01-12
This is a beautiful book. Perfect for anyone who loves new york city.
Of passing interest.......2006-12-23
I'm fascinated by "then and now" picture compilations. That said, this book does have some really good examples of the genre, however they are surrounded by much less interesting and really unimportant locations throughout NYC. It's a mix. If you like to see how a great city changes, this will have some utility. As a former native New Yorker, I found enough to make me glad I'd bought it but not enough to delight me.
Double take.......2006-07-10
Then and now photobooks of American cities are steady bookshop sellers but it is not until you turn over the pages of 'New York Changing' that you'll realise that this is how it should be done. Douglas Levere, with help from Berenice Abbott, has created a brilliant photo record of the world's premier city.
To start with Abbott created the perfect architectural record with the 1935 to 1939 WPA sponsored project when she shot just over three hundred photos of the city (you can see two hundred of these in 'Berenice Abbott: Changing New York', ISBN 1565845560) and Levere has retaken over a hundred of these with eighty-one appearing in his book.
Unlike other inferior books of the genre Levere has taken the utmost care with his project. Not only using the same type of camera and lens as Abbott but waiting until the same season and time of day to freeze the moment six decades later. A fascinating page of technical details at the back of the book explains more. The eighty-one photos are divided into four chapters with the majority taken in Manhattan. On each spread Abbott's photo is on the left and Levere's opposite, Bonnie Yochelson writes a straightforward caption for all of the images.
With the help of 200dpi printing, quality paper and elegant design these photos (and the book) look just stunning. The perfect photobook!

A Before and After Look at New York.......2006-03-30
In the middle of the depression Berenice Abbott began a five year, WPA funded project to document in photographs New York's transformation from the 19th century to the modern metropolis of skyscrapers. The result was published as 'Changing New York.'
Sixty years later Douglas Levere went back to the same sites of 100 of Abbotts photographs and took another picture with the same angle, the same view, and usually even the same time of day (to get the same sun angle) of the same scene.
The result is this book, 'New York Changing' which shows these pictures arranged next to each other. That way, the only differrence between the pictures is the changes that have come about in the basic structure of the city.
This is a beautiful coffee table book, except that seeing one set of pictures makes you want to turn to the next set, and you've soon gone through the whole book.
Highly recommended.
A Real Treat.......2005-11-12
Fascinating book! Berenice Abbott's photographs from the 30's alongside present-day photos of the same locations shot by Douglas Levere. A great way to experience the layers of history in New York.
