hurrah for heterodox economics.......2001-06-12

maybe i'm better read now, or maybe this work is more relevant, but i found this work tremendously more readable than the capitalist imperative, which i tackled last fall. in this work, storper asks why we still have cities and agglomerations in an era marked by increasing mobility of resources.

one reason i like storper is because he eschews traditional urban economics, which i too find rigid and at times anachronistic. to counter location theory, storper argues that cities and regions, given the recent changes to capitalism, evolve along a path of cumulative knowledge, such that knowledge and learning gain economic value and hence competitive advantage. individuals, firms, and public institutions are codependent. knowledge creation is a process unique to cities/regions and even more compelling unique to individual cities/regions. while a few cities might be technology or financial hubs, their culture and inhabitants influence the way activities are conducted such that their output is also unique. therefore no recipe for economic development and policy can be given - you have to use your brain and think. cities are not machines, but reflexive entities which assume the characteristics of their constituent parts. he concludes, "heterodox regional economics, like economics in general, continues to be controlled by the metaphor of economic systems as machines, with hard inputs and outputs... this focus on economic development must now be complemented by another focus, where the guiding metaphor is the economy as relations, the economic process as conversation and coordination, the subjects of the process not as factors but as reflexive human actors, both individual and collective..."

In the Metcalfian style, established in preceeding texts by a preceeding Metcalf; Destructive and Useful Insects by Metcalf and Flint (early 60's), this textbook was, I believe, intended for agricultural entomology students and should serve very well for such purpose.

In the 5th century the Indian mathematician Aryabhata (476-499) wrote a small but famous work on astronomy, the Aryabhatiya. This treatise, written in 118 verses, gives in its second chapter a summary of Hindu mathematics up to that time. Two hundred years later, an Indian astronomer called Bhaskara glossed this mathematial chapter of the Aryabhatiya.

An english translation of Bhaskara’s commentary and a mathematical supplement are presented in two volumes.

Subjects treated in Bhaskara’s commentary range from computing the volume of an equilateral tetrahedron to the interest on a loaned capital, from computations on series to an elaborate process to solve a Diophantine equation.

This volume contains an introduction and the literal translation.

The introduction aims at providing a general background for the translation and is divided in three sections: the first locates Bhaskara’s text, the second looks at its mathematical contents and the third section analyzes the relations of the commentary and the treatise.

Good Comprehensive text book.......2004-01-07

This is a comprehensive text book covering the history, equipment, and skills of archery. It also includes information on target and field sports as well as hunting and physical conditioning. One complaint is that it reads like a college text book and the pictures are black and white. I had hoped for more and bigger pictures illustrating techniques. This book is for adults. Kids will be bored with it. It is extremely detailed, but sometimes hard to read with sentences like "The remaining three fingers are placed or 'hooked' on the bowstring at or slightly past the first or distal interphalangeal joints of your fingers." Overall you can't complain about a lack of information. You just might wish it were faster and lighter reading.

Pros: The method in this book is outstanding! However, if you really want to learn Spanish you will have to use it WITH another book that goes through more details on grammar. Combining the two methods is, in my opinion, the best.
Cons: Reading Poetry is about the hardest thing you can read in another language. You have to understand so much about the culture to really understand it. I would like to see these guys put out a book like this in which the reading is more entertaining, like maybe from some of the current best selling Spanish writers.

This book was well worth the price I paid. It covers a lot of grammar and quite a bit of vocabulary. Most of the exercises are set up so that you only need an index card (or other piece of paper you can't see through) to do them.

Although I wish that it had a dictionary in the back, I'm still giving it a five-star rating. I sure wish it had an audio CD with all the reading passages, because then it would be outstanding, but I'm not marking it down for lack of a CD, since it isn't meant for listening comprehension.

I loved FRENCH FOR READING, so thought I'd give this one a try. Make sure you have a dictionary because there isn't one at the back of the book - and sometimes the passages give you words you've never seen before - with no way to look them up. Also - these chapters seem a bit denser then 'French For Reading', make sure you go slowly, maybe only doing 1/2 chapter at a time.

Absolutely the Best Way to Learn to Read Spanish.......2007-05-24

I'm an intermediate Spanish student and had been struggling with my reading skills. After two chapters and about ten hours' practice, I was able to read almost flawlessly. I'm now on chapter 5 and I can't believe how much I've learned. I'm recommending this book to all my friends, and my Spanish teacher is so impressed, he is ordering it for his next class. Now I need to find a way to learn to speak as easily as I learned to read.

This is an invaluable tool!

The fact that it is in English (not technical words), explains medical jargon,uses,side effects, etc and catagories of real life situations, many people can relate.
I use it frequently.
