Managing a Nonprofit Organization in the Twenty-First Century

Book Description
Like the arteries of a living organism, nonprofit organizations carry a life force that has long been a centerpiece of American culturea faith in the capacity of individual action to improve the quality of human life. They embody two seemingly contradictory impulses at the heart of American character: a deep-seated commitment to freedom and individual initiative and an equally fundamental realization that people live in communities and consequently have responsibilities that extend beyond themselves. Uniquely among American institutions, those in the nonprofit sector blend these competing impulses, creating a special class of entities that Alexis de Tocqueville recognized more than 175 years ago to be "more deserving of our attention" than any other part of the American experiment.
Until very recently, little headway had been made in tracking developments to the nonprofit sector systematically, in assessing the impact they are having, and in getting the results into the hands of the nonprofit practitioners, policymakers, the press, and the public at large. Lester Salamon helped close that information gap by compiling a comprehensive volume titled The State of Nonprofit America (Brookings). This book, which grew out of the larger project, provides an accessible overview of the sector to non-scholarly readers. It paints a broad and clear picture of the state of America's nonprofit sector while identifying the changes that might be needed to promote its long-term health. The result is a concise and convincing testament to the scope, significance, and determination of America's nonprofits.
Customer Reviews:
A seminal work of articulate scholarship.......2004-01-14
The Resilient Sector: The State Of Nonprofit America by Lester M. Salamon (Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies) is a critical and instructive analysis of America's nonprofit organizations as they operate in the country today. Tracing their resilience in response to turbulent challenges, and postulating that the private sector's very flexibility may yet prove its Achilles heel in that it undermines the nonprofit sector's ability to do what must be done, The Resilient Sector is well-researched, thought-provoking, a seminal work of articulate scholarship and very highly recommended reading for anyone involved with or donating to charitable, political, social issue, or religious non-profit organizations whether they are local, regional, or national.

Book Description
Developments in industry in recent years have made employee learning a critical factor in organizations' success. The ever-faster pace of technological development and the variety of tasks that business professionals must perform mean that on-the-job learning is a constant, too quick and vital to be left to training departments. And yet, management knows too little about how workers learn on the job and does not give sufficient time and effort to understanding this process. As learning is largely left to chance, it is amazing that it happens at all, and well enough to enable workers to be productive and not to destroy each other's work. This book explores the daily work lives and learning experiences of programmers and other professionals in the computer-software industry. The book focuses on the staff of one small software firm, allowing workers to tell their own stories, describing their work and their use of all the resources available to them in learning the complex systems they are required to develop and maintain. Based in qualitative sociological method, it is an ethnography of a business setting as well as a study of learning. After describing the professional world in which programmers work, the book introduces the company to be discussed and the backgrounds of the participants in the study. Then, proceeding from the environment to the systems to be learned, the author schematizes all of the resources professionals use on the job--their experiences and thought processes, documentation, their colleagues, the computer, and the software system itself--as learning tools. All of this material is then related to academic models of learning style, which are mostly found not to be very relevant, as they are not grounded in the life experiences of workers. The author advocates that professionals' learning be modeled in context, that training be developed from experience rather than from theory, and that management strive to build a workplace and an organizational culture as conducive as possible to employees' continual learning.

great collection.......2001-08-28
I thought this book had a great collection of running stories that just inspired me to just run and help me in my races to keep going. I enjoyed reading this book eminsly and it has something for all ages and all types of runners. I recommend that any runner get this book, especially if you're looking for inspiration
Encompasses all the emotions of running: excellent.......1999-02-27
This book should be in the hands of every runner. The short stories are amazing. The different portrayals of running can appeal to anyone, from beginner to advanced. Some of the stories will bring you to your race days and get your adrenaline running as if you are runninf the race. I can only read them one at a time because I get to pumped up and have to relax.
The poems are very eclectic. They capture the crazy thoughts that go through your mind while you are running. They also are beautiful descriptions of a very basic act. I loved them all. Every once in a while I read one before i go run. They make you think, and isn't that what happens on a run. These poems give you good mind fuel.

These books are always a hit!.......2007-02-13
The kids love it and its fun once in a while to wonder about a certain record and look it up!
Unbelievable..........2007-01-16
I'm so surprise I can get this book since I got Amazon notice have stock for me to order..... being this is already two years ago..... and 50th Anniversary Edition......
This book is really really fun and make me more more understand the Guinness Records.....
I'm very high recommand this book in your library.....
An essential reference tool........2006-03-14
Whilst some readers will always buy the latest edition of this book because they are interested in the largest, tallest, fastest or whatever, personally I have always found this book to be a first class reference source.
It was from the Guinness Book of records that I learned that the largest Turtle known to man was a giant Leatherback Turtle which (to my great surprise) was washed up on the shores of Ireland - and "not" some Caribbean country as one might expect.
Of course, not all the records are repeated from one edition into the next or each book would be identical except for any new records achieved during the past 12 months. For this reason, the reader might need to collect a few editions of the book in order to have as good a collection of records as possible.
Just a few loose thoughts really.

Read it all day!.......2006-01-20
Although it's not long enough for you to be able to read it all day, you will find yourself unable to set it down and just keep on turning the pages. Guiness world records:2005 is packed to the cover with intriguing facts from every corner of the globe. Buy it and you'll be quizing your family about the longest nails or the biggest ball of yarn.
Review of the section on 'Language and Literature'.......2005-08-30
This review relates to the section on 'Language and Literature' only.
I hate to be a party- pooper but unlike most other reviews of this book I found it to be dismal and self- serving, to say the least.
Guinness informs us in this section that the best- selling book of all time after the Bible and the Koran is the Guinness Book of Records. I have my doubts about the accuracy of this and it seems to me more like a piece of self- advertisment than anything else. Tasteless, even if true.
Worse . The editors of the book do not seem to realize that in Literature it is quality that counts, even when one is measuring quantity. It is absolutely insignificant that some person named Jones happen to put the most words on paper in writing a thing he called a novel. It is however of significance that of all the very long novels ever written Tolstoy's 'War and Peace' is the greatest. There is no hint of Tolstoy,Shakespeare, Dante, or any of the other greats of world- literature in the section on literature.
Trivia and even quadrivia need to be more significant than this if they are to be of real interest.

Voices of Alzheimer's.......2007-08-23
A great book that outlines my ideas on facing the caregiving of someone with dementia!
Thanks for writting this book.......2004-12-24
This book is a small treasure. I keep picking it up a reading different passages. It helps me understand and appreciate my father, who has Alzheimer's, in ways that I have forgotten.
It helped the whole family, even dad picked it up to read.
Thanks for a fabulous book,
I am one of the people in this book.......2004-12-12
My name is Doreen. I am one of the people in Betsy Peterson's book. She mailed me a signed copy which I have lent to other people and they also found it very useful. I am writing this to let people know that even though the book is called Voices of Alzheimers, it is really a book about Dementia in general (my diagnosis is Pick's Disease, not Alzheimers and as the book indicates they later changed Betsy Peterson's husband's diagnosis from Alzheimer's to another dementia). So if you have a family member who has a dementia other than Alzheimers, you can also find helpful (and hopeful) information in this book.
A Must-Have Book on the Subject.......2004-11-25
This small book is a treasure of honest and deep sharing on the part of dementia patients and their caregivers and loved ones. The book is visually very attractive, the content is well organized, and the quotes--covering the full spectrum of sadness and anger to wisdom, humor, hope, and gratitude--are interspersed with the author's own moving story. Reading this has enabled me to relate with much greater understanding and confidence to those with Alzheimer's, and there is an excellent section on available resources. Voices of Alzheimer's is unique in the literature on the subject and deserves to become a classic in the field.
Jenneke Barton
A wonderful book to help you understand Alzheimers.......2004-11-23
It's a wonderful book. Its power is in the innocence and simplicity of the quotes. It moves you from complete unawareness of the disease, up through recognition and understanding.
I bought it for my husband, whose mother is in the middle stages of Alzheimers. He read it, or should I say, devoured it, immediately. Then he bought one for his sister (he didn't want to give away his copy).
It's a text book on the progression of Alzheimers, written by people who were there, and woven into a beautiful story. It brings about a sense of peace after reading it.
