Learn current Banking Reality & What the Future Holds.......2005-04-24
First off I am not a not an economist. Bought this book because I am very interested in how current monetary system works and what the future holds. This book fortunatly covers both topics; in great detail. The book goes over the advantages and disadvantages of the current way, how banks lend to grow the economy. It then goes over how that is being transformed and what we can expect in the future. The book is not as dry as most hard-core academic books, it is readible. My goal is to have a broad understanding of how the financial system of our world works, and this book did a great job of helping me understand. It does have a few advanced mathematical equations, I do not know how to solve them but they were very well explained...so at least I do understand what the equations are for. Great book it might be worth it to look for more books in the Raffaele Mattioli Lecture series.

Book Description
Forty years after the publication of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, this important study examines the history, industrial uses, and harmful effects of the twelve most commonly used organochloride chemicals. All have been fully or partially banned by the Stockholm Protocol, an international treaty signed by about 120 countries in December 2000. Among the twelve are the dioxins (the active ingredient in Agent Orange) and polychlorinated byphenyls (PCBs), which are toxic in minute quantities. Johansen pays special attention to the Inuit of the Arctic, where these chemicals have been bio-accumulating to dangerous levels, moving up the food chain to a degree of toxicity that some Inuit mothers are no longer able to safely breast-feed their infants. The polar stratospheric ozone has been devastated by emissions of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and new scientific findings connect global warming near the Earth's surface to significant cooling in the stratosphere. This synergy aggravates ozone depletion because the chemical reactions that destroy the ozone become more energetic as temperatures drop. Synthetic toxins have taken their toll on minority ethnic groups in the United States, and persistent organic pollutants have inflicted physiological damage on humans and other animals. Finally, Johansen explores the estrogenic effects of such chemicals. Sperm counts have declined as much as 50% in 50 years.

From dioxins to the accumulation of dangerous chemicals.......2004-01-14
Bruce E. Johansen's The Dirty Dozen surveys toxic chemicals and the planet's future, considering the highly toxic effects of the most commonly used chemicals banned in many countries by international treaty in 2000. From dioxins to the accumulation of dangerous chemicals in arctic environments, The Dirty Dozen reveals patterns of migration, synergy and chemical reactions which have an ongoing effect on the Earth's systems.

Book Description
Strength and power are essential attributes for any martial artist, affecting everything from how hard you punch to how high you jump. Whether your goal is to defeat an opponent in the ring or on the street, the stronger you are, the better the odds of walking away as the victor.
Strength and Power Training For Martial Arts is a total approach to building your strength base. Learn how to use free weights, machines, body weight exercises and plyometrics to build your muscles while increasing speed and flexibility. Each muscle group is discussed in detail - how it's used in martial arts, how to develop it, which exercises are most effective, and most importantly, how to take advantage of anatomical strengths when striking, blocking, kicking and grappling.
Beyond muscular strength, this book looks at the concepts of cardiovascular strength endurance, the impact of flexibility on strength, mental approaches to training, and the anatomy, physics and biomechanics of power. Strength and Power Training For Martial Arts wraps up with training plans for karate, taekwondo, hapkido, judo, jujitsu, aikido, muay thai/kickboxing and mixed martial arts as well as advice on designing your own personalized strength training plan.

Worth the money.......2007-07-10
I have been weight training for years. Thought this might just be another copy of every other weight training book I ever bought. I was pleasantly surprised to find new information and new ways to weight train (and plyometrics) to complement my recent entrance into the exciting world of Mixed Martial Arts.

Ideas that really work.......2005-08-09
Martina Sprague's scientific approach to martial arts is a breath of fresh air in a field often filled with hype and hyperbole. Her writing is insightful, easy to understand, and, most importantly, her ideas really do work. The photos are clear and do a good job of reinforcing the text.
Strength and power training is important--if you want to perform in the ring, on the street, or in just about any martial endeavor, functional strength is an essential component of success. As the author so eloquently states, martial arts skill, background and experiences are not substitutes for strength; they are complementary qualities. If you are overweight, under-conditioned, or lazy, you must condition yourself above the basic requirements of your art, regardless of what kinds of hurdles stand in your way. So how do you build muscular strength, endurance, and power? By reading this outstanding book, of course... Well, that and making a concerted effort to regularly perform the exercise routines contained herein ;-).
The book begins by debunking common misconceptions about strength training then briefly covers important anatomical facts you'll need to take best advantage of the rest of the materials. Ms. Sprague's in-depth knowledge really shines through, explaining how each muscle group is used in the various martial arts, how to develop it effectively, and how to take advantage of anatomical strengths when striking, kicking, or grappling.
Topics include bodyweight and mechanical weight exercises, muscular endurance, strength and flexibility, upper body strength, abdominal strength, plyometrics, cardiovascular endurance, breathing, and flexibility. The mental approach necessary for successful training programs is also laid out. One of the biggest gems in this fine work is right at the end of the book where the author describes how to tailor a training plan for your art and designs a couple of martial art specific programs for karate, tae kwon do, hapkido, judo, jujitsu, aikido, muay thai, and mixed martial arts. Her own training program is also included.
This is a great book for the novice and expert alike. Well laid out, easy to read, and straightforward to implement. Heartily recommended!

Get strong, get explosive, get fast.......2005-06-17
As one of the busiest writers in the martial arts today, Martina Sprague never fails to nail a subject like a well-placed front kick. In her latest book Strength and Power Training for Martial Arts, she tackles the subject with knowledge gained from years of training experience and practical application in the ring.
I've been training since 1965 and over the years I have learned that there are few absolutes in the martial arts. But there is one that's close: fighters who train with resistance - weights, machines and Swiss ball - are almost always superior to those who don't. It just makes sense: resistance exercises, properly done, increases your power, explosiveness, and speed. Not a bad deal for two or three 30-minute sessions a week.
Now, there are definitely wrong ways to go about resistance training, but fortunately Sprague shows you how to do it right. She discusses the various muscle groups, explains how they are used in the martial arts, and then shows you the best way to develop them. She also discusses concepts of cardiovascular training, the impact of flexibility on strength, and how to use your mind in training.
No matter what your fighting art, this books works.

Beautiful Men.......2007-05-21
Beautiful images are paired with extensive information about homosexuality. Tasteful pictures on the cover will allow you to read this book in public.
Absolute Beautiful and will help you find someone *chuckle*.......2007-04-09
This book is so beautiful and the images so artistically done and enticing it's worth it for that alone. The information is clear and easy about homosexuality as a whole, tho not a kama sutra or for those only interested in sex. The killer is this book is large and the cover and rear with such large and tasteful images between men it can be read many places letting others know you're gay in a very non-invasive way. Cruising I hardly found anyone (at least without ticking off some straight guys) but just reading this LARGE book with LARGE and tasteful homosexual cover in public caught the attention of men from quite some distances and I was approached a great deal when reading it and created quite some cool relationships.
Great book, great read, fantastic photos.
A Fantastic introduction to gay life for the novice gay man.......2007-01-05
I am a 30-year-old gay man who has been out(to myself and family)since I was 27-years-old. When I came out I had no resources except for the internet. One of the first things I did was look for literature and reading material. That is when I happened upon this gem, "Ultimate Gay Sex" by Michael Thomas Ford.
I devoured every single page the moment I unwrapped the packaging. Ford elucidates upon every facet of Gay life from coming out to choosing the right kind of wedding! Everything that I wanted, and needed to know, could be found inside those pages. It was an encyclopedia for the newly out gay male.
For instance, I was so clueless that I didn't know the difference between Latex and Polyurethane condoms. Moreover, I really studied his chapters on HIV/AIDS and various other STD's. But, more than anything, I enjoyed the segments on gay sex. My biggest fear about coming out was how could I please and be pleased sexually. The book taught me that the sum of gay sex is NOT anal penetration. In addition to that the pictures are stunningly gorgeous. The models really got me, well, aroused. The book made me feel a certain equilibrium. It showed that I could truly have a fulfilling and satisfying life as a gay man by simply being myself.
I highly recommend this for anyone who is on the verge of coming out. This book will help you along your journey. It may not help the experienced older gay man, but for all of us just starting out it is a must have.
Truly ONLY For Beginners.......2006-07-11
I was extremely disappointed when I purchased this title. While the book is indeed full of wonderful full-color photographs, the actual information in the book is useful only those who really need an introduction to gay life. Otherwise, the sex portion of this book, especially, has absolutely nothing in it that two teen boys with a tiny spark of imagination couldn't come up with. I would not recommend this book to anyone who has ever had sex before, since you've probably done everything that Ford discusses.
Book Description
Dildos and harnesses are purchased and used worldwide by a wide range of people - women and men; singles and couples; gay, straight, and bi. The Ultimate Guide to Strap-on Sex explains how to choose and use these sex aids and includes ways to enhance sexual experiences. The author weaves quotes from her workshop students throughout the informal, humorous text.
Customer Reviews:
Dear me, I think I might be gushing..........2005-09-06
I'm a bit of a sex nerd; consequently I read a lot of instruction manuals. Of the ones I've seen, Fairy Butch's The Ultimate Guide To Strap-On Sex was the most useful and eye-opening, not just on the subject of strap-ons, but of sex toys in general, genderplay, lube (includes a section rating 30 or so lubes for texture and taste!), and communication.
As another reviewer points out, columns from Butch's stint as a Dear Abby-style advice writer appear throughout--in at least one case, the text from one of these is reprinted almost verbatim pages later in the main text. If I were a regular reader of Butch's columns, I'm sure I'd have a lower opinion of this, but if I haven't seen it, it's new to me. Additionally, sex positions are described rather than illustrated--I found this hot, but some may not.
One more thing to note is the use of pronouns in the book--Butch doesn't seem to go in for the "zhe, hir" style of gender negativity, instead varying the couplings she uses as examples for techniques. Since she presents every gender strapping on and acting as receptive, it occasionally took me a couple read-throughs to determine who was doing what to whom with which organ/device. Overall, however, a fine resource not only for strap-ons, but just for general sexual technique, health, and well-being.
good guide but could use more drawings.......2004-07-30
In 13 chapters Karlyn Lotney, otherwise known as Fairy Butch, gives us a good guide on how to use strapons. The focus is on women so there isn't so much really enough about men to call it "the ultimate". While there are some images there need to be more to help those trying to figure how to use them and especially on the positions you can use because a strapon is never in the same position as biological penis. A good book to help someone start out and feel more comfortable. It even includes very rare topics such as clit pumping. "101 Sex Toys" is a better guide to dildos and the equipment but this is a good solid place to start exploring strapons.
It's good but not...quite...great.......2004-02-23
Karlyn Lotney, aka Fairy Butch, has deployed hir extensive experience as a columnist to write this book. I decided to buy the book after spending a weekend reading Fairy Butch archives on http://planetout.com. Sadly, the book didn't go far beyond what I had already read, much of it is reproduced verbatim from hir column. For those of you out there low on cash, I recommend reading hir column archives and forgetting this book.
That said, if you aren't low on cash or want a handy reference without having to read multiple screens worth of information it's quite lovely. Illustrations would be useful, though, especially in the discussion of positions, a discussion that I think there could be more of! The main thing I took away from this book was to relax, go for it, don't worry, it'll be excellent. And it was excellent, so it seems to have done its job!
Hallelujah.......2003-02-22
This is the first book I've read that I have learned some neat tricks from. My relationship with my honey was hitting a dry spell and we needed more ideas. The ideas were refreshing, new, and gave a lot of insight. I found myself saying Hallelujah several times. The only part of the book that I disliked was that it didn't tell about rashes and what to do with them. Yet, I would still recommend this book to any couple who want to have fun while "floozing."
WOW!! I loved this book........2003-02-07
I've read many Ultimate guides to sex and The Ultimate Guide to Strap on Sex is by far the most entertaining, informative, and fun book. I wish it had more pictures, but otherwise I keep this book under my pillow for daily reference!! I can't wait for volume 2 to be published.

Book Description
Our brightest, most creative children and adults are often being misdiagnosed with behavioral and emotional disorders such as ADHD, Oppositional-Defiant Disorder, Bipolar, OCD, or Asperger's. Many receive unneeded medication and inappropriate counseling as a result.
Physicians, psychologist, and counselors are unaware of characteristics of gifted children and adults that mimic pathological diagnoses. Six nationally prominent health care professionals describe ways parents and professionals can distinguish between gifted behaviors and pathological behaviors.
Features include a Foreword by Ronald E. Fox, Psy.D., Ph.D., Past President of the American Psychological Association, and:
Written for parents and professionals Characteristics of gifted children and adults Diagnoses most commonly given to gifted children and adults Traits of diagnoses incorrectly given to gifted children and adults Guidelines to avoid mislabeling gifted children Parent-child relationship problems Issues for gifted adults Advice for selecting a counselor or health care professional
"Misdiagnosis and Dual Diagnoses of Gifted Children and Adults" has been endorsed by three past presidents of the American Psychological Association, two neurologists, and two family practice physicians.
Customer Reviews:
I thought all kids are "gifted".......2007-03-23
In my view, every child is a "Gift" from god, and hence is gifted. I dont need a book to tell me that. I suspect parents these days are confusing giftedness with genius.. hence the clamor to label their kids as gifted. The good news in all this is atleast parents are paying attention to their kids more now than they used to. But please dont subject your kids to endless tests (like one reviewer below) just so someone labels your kids as gifted. These tests only measure genius ability (IQ), and not giftedness. Your kids may become outstanding athletes (very few athletes ever have IQ over the normal range). They may be gifted in athletics.. or become outstanding musicians - gifted in music. Or famed actors (gifted in the arts). Even Einstein wasn't gifted in the normal sense of the word.. he didnt speak till he was 4. But was he a genius? Absolutely.
A Must Read for Parents, Educators and Professionals .......2007-01-12
A very good book to help sort through what characteristics are about giftedness and what may stem from other issues. It is the first book I have read that tackles all the different and so frequently misunderstood issues of giftedness in a thorough way. It is also an easy read and presented in a way that a lay person can really understand.
For the first time since finding out that my son was exceptionally gifted 7 years ago, I felt like I had a complete understanding of him and that the aplphabet soup of his "diagnosis" by more than one professional is a result of them misunderstanding giftedness.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is raising, teaching or assessing gifted children and adults. It should be required reading!
Finally, what I've been saying.........2006-12-04
Finally, I have found a book that is saying what I have been saying all along. Stop looking at the behaviors of a child to determine if they have AS, look at the circumstances, experiences, and lifestyle that have contributed to the behavior! This book also taught me that a child can be gifted in some areas and be average, or below average in other areas!
This book helped me with the "professionals" at my daughter's school. I could show them that the sensory "overexcitabilities" are the same for AS as in some gifted children. She has no other signs of AS, except for the sensory issues. So naturally, they jumped high and far to the conclusion of AS! I am so glad I bought this book. It truly takes a parent of a gifted child to understand what the authors are talking about!
A much needed book - should be in the library of every parent and professional who lives with or works with gifted kids..........2006-10-30
Many common behaviors of gifted kids (and adults) can look like symptoms of ADHD, Depression, Aspergers, and other psychiatric or medical conditions... and too many kids are being misdiagnosed, labeled, and sometimes medicated by well-meaning but perhaps uninformed professionals. This is a much needed book - the only one that I know of - that looks at the similarities and differences between the "symptoms" of giftedness and such disorders so that parents and professionals can be better positioned to avoid misdiagnosis... or better understand the overlap between characteristics of giftedness and other conditions. This is truly an important contribution to giftedness literature.
Thank Goodness for This Book.......2006-09-18
If it weren't for this book, and for James Webb, I might have believed the teachers and psychologists who told me that something was really wrong with my daughter. After reading this book, I realized that several things were really right with her, but that we weren't handling her in the ways most likely to help her adapt and succeed.
With the help of this book, some enlightened professionals, and my own observations of my girl, we have succeeded in helping her find her way within the school, with her peer group, and with adults.
If you have a child being labeled as having Aspergers, ADHD, etc. and one who is very bright, get this book. It may be that the disabilities are there, but it may not. Too many of our teachers, social workers, and psychologists are too eager to slap on a label and let themselves off the hook. Don't give up on your kid, and don't let them do it either.
This book will help you find ways to evaluate what you are seeing, and what you are being told, and it will help you find ways to respond constructively.
