How can the positive results of globalization be shared more broadly and any negative effects be minimized?Guillermo de la Dehesa, current Chairman of the Centre for Economic Policy Research, offers an objective and dispassionate analysis of the emotionally charged globalization debate, detailing the economic effects of globalization on individuals, governments, nation states and businesses.Seeking reason in this impassioned debate, de la Dehesa examines who stands to win and who stands to lose from the process of globalization, in a style accessible to readers unfamiliar with economic theory.

Book Description
Our dominant culture continues to celebrate blind economic expansion despite its heavy toll on people and nature all over the globe. In fact, our national income accounts (such as the GDP) and our policies ignore that much of today's economic income stems from liquidating our social and natural assets. While living on the planet's capital, rather than on the interest (or sustainable harvest) of its renewable assets, we operate as if we could transgress ecological limits forever. Rather than acknowledging this ecological reality, we actively resist recognizing biophysical limits and use wealth to temporarily shield ourselves from the fallout of ecological overshoot. This study addresses the core question of sustainability and shows why nations will also secure their future competitiveness if they improve their ecological performance. Taken together, all the countries studied consume approximately one-third more ecological services than their available ecological capacity can provide, suggesting that the global economy as a whole is poorly positioned for future competition. Still we find that the European countries, Japan , and Canada (this last because of its large ecological remainder) are in distinctly more favorable starting positions for future competitiveness than all the other countries. They are better at using fewer resources to produce commodities, and, in the case of the countries with ecological remainders, they take better care of their existing ecological capacities. Perhaps the most significantcant finding is that 16 of the 20 eco-efficiency leaders (about 80 percent) are competitive, compared to only 11 of the 24 eco-efficiency laggards (about 45 percent). This suggests either that eco-efficiency already offers a competitive edge or that competitiveness and high eco-efficiency are not mutually exclusive.

Book Description
This array of bottom-fighting strategies is specifically designed to not only protect practitioners from being hit in any situation, but also to help them defeat bigger, stronger opponents. Exclusively focusing on the bottom game—a position in which most fighters feel vulnerable—this resource teaches students of jiu-jitsu and mixed–martial arts fighting how to develop hidden strengths and exploit the advantages of this seemingly weak position. With details and important information never before shown outside the Gracie family, the authors explore the techniques, tactics, and mindset necessary to win when fighting from the bottom—whether in an official sports jiu-jitsu competition or simply sparring with a partner.
Customer Reviews:
Great book to increase your grappling skills.......2007-09-09
This is another great book by Royce Gracie. Unlike some other books written by the Gracie family this book focuses on knowledge and technique to be good at grappling and not just on strength. The book is full of hundreds of great techniques that really work quite well. I go to jujitsu class every day with a new technique and I keep frustrating my fellow classmates with my new knowledge. This book, and Royce's first book, are a must have for anyone that wants to increase their skill in grappling without having to hit the gym five days a week in the hopes of being strong enough to using some "fancy looking" move. On a scale of 10, I would give this book a 9.5!
Great encyclopedia of techniques.......2007-07-24
This book follows the pattern of the first volume. It is a great reference tool for the bottom position. About the second half of the book are moves from the guard while the first half is a mix of the other bottom positions. Its a great book!
Necessary Jiu-Jitsu.......2007-07-18
If you want to improve your jiu-jitsu game through the use of books, there are three you should read. The first is Ultimate Fighting Techniques Volume 1 - a book that details the basics such as clinching and fighting from the top. The second is Gracie Submission Essentials by Helio and Royler Gracie - a book that is completely focused on submissions from almost every imaginable position. The third is this book, and I have found it to be the most useful for improving my skills.
_Ultimate Fighting Techniques Volume 2: Fighting from the Bottom_ reveals what you should do when you are fighting from positions that are considered "disadvantaged" - that is, positions where your back is generally on the mat. If you intend to compete in a grappling tournament, you WILL find yourself in these positions eventually. The knowledge in this book could very well be the difference between you having to submit to an opponent and you being able to reverse positions and submit them. Do you know how to escape the side mount without being choked out or submitted via kimura? Can you break the mounted choke? Can you do a half-guard sweep? If the answer to any of these questions is NO, then you need to study this book.
This book contains 304 pages. All of the "disadvantaged" positions are covered in this book; however, the primary focus is on the back, mounted, side control, and guard positions. The techniques are broken down step-by-step and include numerous photographs to make learn them on your own relatively easy.
Note: While this book is titled _Ultimate Fighting Techniques_, it is primarily Gi-Brazilian Jiu-jitsu focused. Most of the techniques will translate to MMA/UFC-style fighting (and there are some MMA-specific techniques included), but that is not the focus of the work. For a more-specific MMA texts, try B.J. Penn's _Mixed Martial Arts: The Book of Knowledge_ or _Bas Rutten's Big Book of Combat_.
BJJ Guy.......2007-05-04
This book is extremely good. IMO it is even better than the first one. Definitely it is more advanced than Royler and Renzo's BJJ Theory and Technique, which is a good book and a complete guide of techniques. This book has a lot of stuff which other books are missing such as defenses and several options for each defense, which I find to be priceless. On the theory portion of the book, it is too brief and almost the same things as the first book, so there's nothing new to it, but regarding the techniques shown, they are excellent. The explanations are very clear and very articulated, something which is extremely important for anyone learning BJJ.

2007 Herbal Almanac (Llewellyn's Herbal Almanac).......2007-03-09
The book is what I wanted, I looked forward to receiving it, I am pleased to have it, it arrived on time and I have never been disappointed with a Llewellyn product.
Mostly Short Stories.......2006-03-16
The book is nice for quick, easy reads, but isn't as informative as a Datebook would be.
So you wanna what???.......2006-02-24
So you wanna plant some herbs, maybe a few spices ... but you need to know when is a great time to plant as well as what goes good with what. So you wanna harvest and be able to use these herbs for things other then for food prep. This book tells you the when's, why's, where's, and will keep your interest. You will find yourself referring back to this book and using it as a reference guide. Would of given 5 stars but as a almanac, I didn't find it as useful.. but as a reference book for herbs when, where and why for planting and harvesting ... it doesn't get much better then this.
useless.......2006-01-05
I don't have the 2004...3...2... but that does not make 2005 one less useless. It's been a long time since I found a book so devoid of (any, let alone useful) information.
Includes some helpful advice...........2005-11-11
If I were to judge THE 2006 HERBAL ALMANAC by the first few entries, I would not give it more than 3 stars. Fortunately, I tend to persevere when reading a book, so I finished reading this book to be rewarded with the discovery of gems in the later chapters.
I particularly liked Stephanie Rose Bird's two pieces "Henna Beauty Treatments" and "African Body Butters". While I've never used henna, apparently, many illustrious women have done so (Cleopatra?), and although henna is generally thought of as a color, it is also a beauty treatment for the hair. I do use the African body butters, and I purchase them from a `Fair Trade' sourcem as Bird suggests - Alaffia.com.
I have had some problems with Eczema all my life but aging and drying skin plus a new sensitivity to sunlight owing to several of the medicines I am taking had made my Eczema symptoms excruciating. I tried everything including several different prescription drugs that I obtained from my dermatologist, but only the African butters have made a difference. For the first time in years, my face, hands and other body parts are clear. My hands were so bad, now matter what I did in the past they cracked and bled all winter and were both painful and unsightly.
I found Ms Bird's essays so interesting and truthful, that I ordered her book from Amazon. I will be sure to review it after I read it. Right now, if you have Eczema, check out the African body butters. They should work for you.

Book Description
Charged with the rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl in 1984, Kirk Bloodsworth was tried, convicted, and sentenced to die in Maryland's gas chamber. From the beginning, he proclaimed his innocence, but when he was granted a new trial because his prosecutors improperly withheld evidence, the second trial also resulted in conviction; this time he was sentenced to two consecutive life terms. In jail Bloodsworth read every book on criminal law available in the prison library. When he stumbled across the first use (in England) of genetic fingerprinting, he persuaded a new lawyer to try for the then innovative DNA testing.
After nine years in one of the harshest prisons in the country, Kirk Bloodsworth was vindicated by DNA evidence. He was pardoned by the governor of Maryland and has gone on to become a tireless spokesman against capital punishment.
Bloodsworth exposes the details of inevitable human error in a capital murder case and in a legal system gone awry. And it tells the story of how one man, through dogged tenacity and courage, saved his own life and the lives of many other innocent men on death row.
This is a page-turner of a book that will move hearts and change minds.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent account of troubling case.......2007-10-08
Tim Junkin does an excellent job of recounting the horrid turn of events that led to Kirk Bloodsworth's arrest, indictment, conviction, and second conviction for a crime he didn't commit. Neither Bloodsworth nor Junkin ever lose sight of the fact that an appalling crime was committed, and Junkin is not afraid to show Bloodsworth, warts and all.
The arrogance of the prosecution in this case is staggering. Even when faced with incontrovertible evidence that the wrong man had been charged, convicted, sentenced to death, and incarcerated for years on end, the prosecutor's office refused to acknowledge that it had been mistaken. Moreover, it waited a decade after Bloodsworth's exoneration to run the DNA it had through CODIS. Unbelievable.
The quibbles I have with the book are few. I wish there had been a detailed index. While the bibliography is immensely helpful, I wish it had included some texts by Elizabeth Loftus or Robert Buckout on the unreliability of eyewitness testimony. In fact, Buckout was hired as an expert by Bloodsworth's defense team in his first trial, but incredibly not permitted by the court to testify. Finally, like many nonfiction books about legal cases, Junkin's book begins almost at the end of the story and then backtracks, finally picking up the story's final threads again toward the end of the book. This tack leads to some overlap and redundancy in storytelling. It may be bothersome to some readers. Is any one of these complaints enough to merit subtracting an entire star from a review of the book? No. Maybe half a star, if that.
If the book Bloodsworth interests you, you might also want to look at the website [...] for more information about the wrongfully convicted and how dedicated lawyers, scientists, and lay people are helping them to see the light of day again.
Three Florida cases: Jerry Rogers, Roy Swafford, Peter Ventura.......2006-07-01
Jerry Layne Rogers, Sr. -- wrongfully convicted and innocent. From 1989 - 1992, I was his investigator at CCR [The Office of Capital Collateral Representative, a state agency representing death-sentenced persons].
Mr. Rogers' case consisted in 1992 of at least 80 boxes of documents, from court files, prosecutor and law enforcement files, trial and evidentiary hearing transcripts, etc. Mr. Rogers's case was the largest and most complicated that CCR has ever represented that I am aware of.
The second largest and most complicated was that of Mr. Gerald Stano, whose lead attorney during most of the development of his case was Mark E. Olive.
In 1995, Mr. Rogers began receiving pro bono representation from the Washington, D.C. law firm Covington and Burling. The result was an unanimous Florida Supreme Court (FSC) 26 page opinion ordering a new trial in Mr. Rogers' case due primarily to prosecutorial misconduct, in particular Brady v. Maryland violations.
To read the opinion, go to the FSC website, then at "Public Information", to the recent opinions, to the year 2001, then toward the bottom at February 15, 2001, one will find the FSC opinion.
During the summer of 2002, Mr. Rogers was re-convicted, however sentenced to life upon the jury recommendation. Now twice Mr. Rogers has been wrongfully convicted.
In 2004, the Florida 5th District Court of Appeal denied relief. The FSC declined to accept jurisdiction and thus denied the petition for review.
Mr. Rogers' case is pending Federal review.
For those interested in reading the narrowly decided by four to three vote Florida Supreme Court opinions regarding two more death sentenced persons whose innocence is an authentic issue, please go to the FSC website, then go to the recent opinions, then chose the correct year and scroll down to the following two cases:
Roy Swafford: April 18, 2002
Peter Ventura: May 24, 2001
Additionally, the issue in the below cases is DNA testing that proves that Roy Swafford did not rape Brenda Rucker:
Roy Swafford: March 26, 2004 Case Nos. SC03.931 and SC03.1153
Please also read other books about Florida's death row by David von Drehle and Michael Mello - also availabe at Amazon.
Thoughtful Indictment of the Death Penalty and "Eyewitness" ID.......2006-03-08
Bloodsworth tells a now familiar story to readers who have followed the work of the Innocent Project (though Bloodsworth
case pre-dates Barry Scheck's Innocent Project) His story amply illustrates how frail justice can be with a system where guilt and innocence can rise and fall on the wealth of the accused or the eyewitness Identification of the accused by a 10 year old child-whether guilty ala OJ or innocent ala Bloodsworth (and so many others--)**** spoiler*** what really shocked me was how the State of Maryland and local DA waited about 10 years after Bloodsworth was released from jail (after 9 years in prison) to submit the DNA specimen to the databank to finally identify the real killer It was also shocking to see the FBI actually pointed an arrow at an area of fabric to test for semen it never tested, a neglect that would havew sealed Bloodsworth 's fate if the clothes had not been preserved -*****The book sadly shows how the system is often all about winning, and not a lot about justice. The defense on federal appeals now does not simply rest on a reasonable doubt of a case lost at trial, but now hopes to prove actual innocence. I wish the prosecution and defense of criminal cases would each open the doors to full disclosure, like civil cases for money do, if defendant will waive their fifth amendment privileges ( with the presence and assistance of counsel) while the government abandons the death penalty. The death penalty is not the worst penalty for the guilty but would have been the ultimate insult for the innocent, like Bloodsworth and too many others. I highly recommend this book and if you still believe in the death penalty, rent the filmed documentary THE THIN BLUE LINE. The death penalty is too kind for the guilty and too final for the innocent Bloodsworth's story ably shows the angst of his daily mantra, his AIM , Bloodsworth , An Innocent Man
DNA saves an innocent man.......2005-10-11
To see how far we've come in the world of science and its important link to criminology, one only needs to read "Bloodsworth", a stunning book about one man's being pulled back from the brink. Handed the death penalty after a first murder conviction and then two consecutive life sentences after a second trial, Kirk Bloodsworth worked tirelessly to clear his name. Coupled with that hard work and with the help of his attorney Bob Morin, who refused to give up on Kirk, this is a story of almost unfathomable proportion.
With a rat-a-tat delivery reminiscent of Dragnet's Joe Friday, author Tim Junkin not only tells the story of the 1984 murder of Dawn Hamilton but he paints a sympathetic portrait of Kirk Bloodsworth.... a man whose hard luck life would make it easier (or so it seemed) to convict him. Junkin does well in allowing us to get inside Kirk's head, and from that vantage point the story unfolds with layers of intrigue. Junkin's narrative style makes it hard to put down the book.
"Bloodsworth" is the best case I've seen to date regarding the inequality and unfairness in the application of the death penalty. While Junkin doesn't go overboard to present that side of the case he duly notes that "the United States is one of only a handful of industrialized countries that continues to execute its prisoners." That's a sobering statement and Tim Junkin, through the case of Kirk Bloodsworth, has offered an electrifying glimpse at what can happen to an innocent man. How many more Kirk Bloodsworths are out there, one can only imagine. This book is a powerful read and I highly recommend it.

I had the pleasure in meeting Kirk Bloodsworth in person. He came to my school and told us his story. I can honestly say that there was not one person who left the room without a change of heart. He is a man that will always leave this impression in my mind, body and soul. I have no yet bought this book, but I am going to soon. If you don't know anything about Kirk and his story, I would advise you do a little research and you'll be more than interested in knowing more. Kirk is a blessed man and now we can all learn from his story.
